Title: Convict - look up needed ...

Hi All

I am looking for any info on a Convict: John Thompson/Thomson (Not a particularly unique name for sure! ;))

John appears in the New Bailey Prison, Salford, Lancashire on the 1861 Census.  I believe he was not there in 1851 and not there in 1871.  As i think I found him in Leek Staffordshire in 1851 and in Bethnal Green London on the 1871.

Anybody able to give me an idea of his crime etc.  any pertinent info.

I would appreciate the hand up

He was born in Leek Staffordshire.  If that at all will help narrow it down!

Yes, looking for John Thompson is like looking for a William Smith ... ;)

thanks for having a look Ricky  :)

I think I will have to hire a Researcher at the Manchester Archives and have them slog through the available Prison Registers for New Bailey and see if then cannot find him there.

Not sure why the post was moved or why it was edited??

I am not sure of John's exact birth date but it was around 1833 ...

 The Prison calendars list at Manchester archives and the Quarter session is your best hope! read the Lancashire board posts as there are people (Post members )that visit these resources!.

I hope I can be excusedfor intruding but I have a similar problem as Luv in that my G/grandpa William Adamson ,b.1840 in Whitby,   Married & resident in Liverpool in 1881 .   Was actually registered in Kirkdale Prison on 1881 census but I have been unable to find evidence of his conviction or sentence which is giving me a lot of angst  ,If anyone can help I would be most grateful .   Ron Hamilton . Hi Ron

Had a quick look at the records and couldnt pin point him on them, being as he was a book keeper, he might have got done for false accounting :-\.
Problem is where was the trial held, and when ???
