Hi all, THIS REQUEST IS NOW COMPLETED THANKS TO ALL
I am very interested in finding out about the Eaton family of Amberley, New Zealand circa 1880 plus.
My main interest is Mary Eaton nee Ford (possibly formerly Hart) ???
She married Henry Eaton and had a son William Henry, possibly a daughter as well.
I would like to end up with a living relative to contact about Mary and her father Thomas Ford.
Any thoughts gratefully recieved.
Cheers
Leandra

Hi Leandra
Interested to know why you think Mary, was formerly "HART" ?
[According to the NZ Marriage Index, she married Henry EATON in 1880 using the name of "Mary FORD". ]

Hi Leandra
In order to find "a living relative to contact", means you'll need (probably) to follow the line of either the daughter or son of Mary and Henry EATON.
Althea has earlier given you the daughter "Ethel Mary EATON - born 1881". The following appears to be the marriage of Ethel.
Ethel Mary EATON - Charles TIMMS - 1901
Children of Ethel Mary and Charles TIMMS :
1902 - William John Henry TIMMS

Leandra ...
Obviously the children of this couple, have also now passed away, but it may be possible for you to obtain further leads to their children, by obtaining information from probate files (wills) or from death notices. (Not sure what part of the country you're in or whether you can easily access records / files ??)
Stanley Gordon TIMMS appears to have been the last of these children to die.
NZ Death Index
1990 - TIMMS - Stanley Gordon - d.o.b. 27 December 1905

[His cemetery records gives occupation as "Retired Valconister" ... interesting ? :) ]
Will add details for the others, shortly.

Hi Lu,
Gosh I don't know what to say. The information you have found in a short time is amazing!!!!!!!
Re you first post, I discovered today the information I had about Mary Eaton was not correct, it was in fact her sister Emma Maud that was nee Ford formerly Hart. She also married a Henry Eaton in 1909, she was previously married to William Hart.
Through your wonderful help it could be likely I might find a living relative who may have some old family stories that have been passed down.
I cannot thank you enough Lu, and I hope the other lady that has eatons in her family has seen your posts too.
So grateful :D ;D :D

Hi again Lu,
I just googled 'valconister' and the only result was you post!
Very interesting.
Leandra

Hi Leandra and Lu ... vulcaniser ??? perhaps :-\ mare
ps googled valconiser ... came up with polisher which seems to be piece of equipment not person :-\
-
There you go Leandra ... looks like our "mare" is onto it !
Cheers Mare :)
["Valconister" ... mmm ... my first thought had been "something to do with tyres ... rubber ??? Vulcaniser certainly seems like a better "title". ]
-
Hi Mare and Lu,
That certanily makes more sense.
Another case of bad transcribing ;)
Thanks to you both

Hi Leandra,
Have been at a meeting all day for work and just seen all this lovely info.

i.e. death notices or probates when I have time if you like
I am not far from Memorial Park Cemetery so no probs
As I said in my PM to you need to check out my Queensland Eatons and see if any came to NZ and do more research

Hi Leandra
I just have a question here, where you have said that "Emma Maud" was the sister of Mary EATON (nee FORD).
Okay ... Emma Maud FORD marries William HART in 1897.
And Mary FORD (her sister) has married Henry EATON back in 1880 ... some 17 years previously ?
This seems to suggest that there is a very big age gap between Mary and Emma Maud ???
Have you got the year of birth for Mary FORD ?
Lu
-
Hi again Lu,
There was a big age gap, Mary was born in 1862 one of three children by Thomas and his first wife. She died young and he remarried, they went on to have nine more children, the last was born in 1892, Thomas would have been 58!
Leandra
-
Hi Leandra
You already have Mary EATON's father as Thomas FORD.
And if Emma Maud FORD is the person born > >
1878 - FORD - Emma Maud - parents: Sarah Ann and Thomas
then they share the same father presumably ?
* Does Mary EATON (nee FORD) have the same mother - i.e. Sarah Ann ??
Lu
-
Ooops ... our posts crossed. :D :D
Yeah, got it thanks.
[Was wondering if it might have been a 2nd marriage for Thomas ... as he was still producing babies, when daughter Mary was having hers. :) ]

Hello,
This is a wild shot but in this topic
Children of Ethel Mary EATON and Charles TIMMS :
you have both my
Grandfather (1975 - TIMMS - Charles Edward - b. 12 March 1904
Probate file Archives NZ (Christchurch) :
TIMMS - Charles Edward - Christchurch - Cartage contractor - 1975,
and
Great Grandfather.
I think the Lady you seek is my Great Grandmother.
And her Husband Charles TIMMS
Ethel Mary EATON - Charles TIMMS - 1901
Children of Ethel Mary and Charles TIMMS :
1902 - William John Henry TIMMS
1904 - Charles Edward TIMMS
1906 - Stanley Gordon TIMMS
1908 - Norman Ewan TIMMS } Twins ?
1908 - Ethel Mary Caroline TIMMS }
I recall Stan lived at Vickerys Rd, in the family house beside the truck shed.
NZ Death Index
1959 - TIMMS - Ethel Mary - 77 years (born circa 1882)
I have a photo of her at what must be 90 or so. I am about 18 months. Now 57.
This may be of no interest but the famiy was 12 as i recall the boys all made up the Upper Riccarton Cricket 11. And a daughter Doris, of Invercargill.
Its too close to be a mismatch as Ted took over the Timms and Sons Cartage Contractors, mostly delivering meat to the butchershops from the abbatoir in Sockburn. This is given as his Job in the notice you posted above.
Please forgive me, but i have no idea of how this site works, or have given much time to the family tree. I came across your page via google search, and was intrigued. I was the favoured grandson, spent a lot of time with my Grandparents, and loved them dearly. 40 Yrs since Ted (Charles Edward) died this year.
I have a great pic of 4 generations of women, with Ethel at the centre. Her strong face is certainly passed to Ted.
Not sure what happens next all this was in search of Charles Father, John, Railwayman. I recall there was time spent in Sefton or thereabouts.
Kind Regards, Royce Timms

Hello Royce,
Its so kind of you to take time to reply to my post five years ago.
Ethel's Mother Mary Ann was the sister of my GG Grandfather William Ford, he was the oldest child of Thomas Ford and Anna Maria Callard, Mary was the second eldest. The family arrived in NZ 8/2/1876 from Devon.
Thanks you for the information you have posted, its very interesting.
I have various photos and documents (although none of Ethel) if you would be interested in them, I can easily email them to you.
Kind regards
Leandra
