Title: Holy Trinity Church, Ettingshall, Wolverhampton
Post by: giraffe on Wednesday 16 September 09 00:44 BST (UK)
Would anyone have any information about this Church? My grandparents married there in 1909.
I really don't know where to start looking. Also, my great-aunt was a leading lady with the Trinity Operatic Society, which performed Gilbert and Sullivan operettas in the locality, around 1947. I think the Society was linked to the Church. Any ideas gratefully received.

Hi Willow, I checked the link, but found that it is a Catholic Church. On my grandparents' Certified  Copy Marriage Cert it says "1909 marriage performed at Holy Trinity Church, in the parish of Ettingshall, Wolverhampton Stafford. Then beneath the personal details it says "Married in the Parish Church according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by me Jno B Colley (Curate)". So I don't think it can be the same one. Of course I realise it could have been demolished years ago :(
The actual date of the marriage was 25th December, 1909, and they both give their addresses as No6 St Mary's Terrace (grandfather) and No2 St Mary's Terrace, (grandmother) Ettingshall.
In the 1911 Census they are living with in-laws in George Street, Ettingshall. Since my grandfaher's side of the family were all staunch Methodists, I'm wondering if there was some 'ecclesiastical' arrangement between the Churches, and although there was a Methodist Chapel in George Street I'm not sure when it was built.
Any ideas most welcome, and if you have any look-ups you need in Worcester . . . .
First 10 years I lived in Wolves, 2nd 10 years in Shropshire, working in Wolves, then moved away.

Hi giraffe,

I just looked through that web page and think it means that it is what used to be called "High Church" but definitely CofE and not Roman Catholic.

So it would have been the "Established Church".  It belongs to the Lichfield Diocese whereas a Catholic church in that area would belong to Birmingham Archdiocese (Diocese of Minervia? if I remember correctly)..

I think it replaced this church which is in Ettingshall Park which comes up under Sedgley

Holy Trinity Church Ettingshall is shown on the 1901 map on the South side of Millfields road just before the junction of Gibbet Lane ( Now Ward Street) Later this site would have been about where the Tarmac plant used to be or the Sprinfield Social Club..
Trinity Operatic Society still exists, however it was formed at Trinity Church which was a methodist church situated on Compton road Wolverhampton. It was peculiar in that it had some Cof E services as part of a covenant.
i hope this is of help.

Thank you so much Kaliannan, This looks like the Church I was after, especially since my grandparents walked to their wedding in midwinter, and they lived not far from this one. The only old map I have of Ettingshall has such small print and is not very detailed. Could you tell me where you got yours please?
Also I think the Compton Road Methodist Trinity Church would be the one where my great- uncle and aunt worshipped. He played the organ, and she was in the choir, also she was leading lady in many of the Operatic Society productions. Would your map show the location of this church too, and do you know how I could contact anyone from the Society?

I know a few older people from Trinity Methodist Church and Trinity Operatic. If you could give names and dates I could possibly enquire for you.

Thank you Phil,
My gt.uncle was Vincent Hartland (died 1968), and I think he was the pianist for the Society, and also he was the Church organist. They lived in St. Phillip's Avenue, off Church Road.
His wife, my gt.aunt was Maude, nee Johnson, who was leading lady for many years, and also sang in the church choir. I remember seeing her as 'Yum Yum' in The Mikado, and have a couple of photos somewhere of her in costume . She had the musical title of 'Madam', and was billed (theatrically) in her maiden name. She died in about 1988, having been a resident at 'Engelberg' in Ash Hill Compton for many years. (This was a Methodist Care Home). They didn't have any children.
I would be interested in any form of the history of the Society, and of the Church, or any indication of where I could find them? I haven't had a chance yet to find the maps of the Church, but will do so soon.
Off track a little, but is Beckminster Methodist Church still there?

I have enquired of a former member of Trinity Operatic and got this information. They remember Maude as the soprano lead and believe her to have been a singing teacher hence the madame. They think she had left before 1952 when they became members and possibly her last role was in Yeoman of The Guard. I don't have any other information I am afraid.
Engleberg still exists as a home.
Beckminster Church is very active and has a web site.

This web site has a picture of Trinity Church on Compton Road view 150 .The Quarter House, a pub recently demolished. All that is left of the church is the War Memorial in the grounds of some flats.

Thank you yet again Phil,
I've just spent a happy hour browsing through the photos of old 'Wolves'. They have brought back many memories of my childhood and teenage years (I moved away when I was 20). I have been back, but hardly recognise most of it, that ring road certainly wiped a lot out.
My Aunt retired as leading lady at some point, as she told us that her voice was no longer as powerful as when she was younger, but I think she remained with the chorus for a while. She died at Engelberg, aged 92.
I have copied the photo of Trinity Church (hope I'm allowed), to 'round out' all the information I have in my tree.
Many thanks again, giraffe

Dudley, Giraffe or Willow

Sorry to butt in but I am researching my wife's family who came from Blackhalve Farm, Wednesfield and stumbled across this topic.

My wife's grandparents John Beech and Clara Lily Smith were married ion 4th September 1924 in the "Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church" before emigrating to Tasmania.

I note Dudley's reference to the "Established Church" but don't understand what it means.  Can you help me with this?

Hi Rodf,

Welcome to Rootschat and Happy Christmas  :D

because of the links between church and state in England, the Church of England is also known as the "Established Church" (i.e. established in the law of the land).

If you have a copy of the complete register page then it may say at the top or at the top of the entry, the full name of the church.

Otherwise, you may find the information you need to identify the church on this link:
http://genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Wednesfield/

By 1924, I would expect that the "Parish Church" for marriages would be the local CofE church in Wednesfield although, in the previous century when it was only a "chapel of ease" then the church for marriages would presumably have been St Peter's, Wolverhampton.

I hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the welcome and the quick response.

The information and references are helpful.

Incidentally, the copy of the original marriage certificate (or extract?) simply states it to be the "Parish Church in the Parish of Wednesfield in the county of Stafford"

Hope you are having a great Christmas day.   It's actually already over here in Australia! (Now 12.45 am Boxing Day)   :'(

Regards
Rod

The main church in Wednesfield is St Thomas's, there are a number of churches near to the farm, but it looks like these were built after the marriage you are looking for.

I have just come across this thread and for those who are interested here is a picture of the Holy Trinity, Compton Rd before it was pulled down. The Quarterhouse can be seen in the background.
Also a pic of the Quarterhouse. My late father in law kept it from 1950-64 when it was a Johnson and Phipps house.

Thank you Bob, for a lovely pic of the church. It's a slightly different view, but much clearer.

Your welcome, it is one my late brother took many years ago.
The Quarterhouse used to be our local and we have spent many a happy hour in there.
