Hello to everyone.
I wonder if anyone can help with a query I have? My Great Grandad, William Milne was listed on the 1911 census living in Gosforth in Newcastle upon Tyne with his family.
William Milne, 38, cartman general, born Stonehaven, Cumberland.
Joan Milne, 32, born Hebburn, Durham
James, 8 (and eleven twelfths, very precise !) born Hebburn, Durham
William, 5 (and seven twelfths) born Gosforth, Northumberland
Ella Robina, 3, born Gosforth, Northumberland
The `Cumberland` is written in a different handwriting so I was wondering if whoever has added this made a mistake in writing it?
Any help would be great.
Tracey

on the 1901 he is listed as born scotland
RG13/4744/77/38.
-
did he have a sister named margaret born scotland 1870 and mother jane born scotland 1841
if so he is again listed in 1891 as being born scotland.
so birthplace cumberland would be wrong
-
Hi and thanks for the help.
I have just started looking into my Dad`s side of the family so am starting from the very begining !!
I have also found in the 1891 census:-
John Robbie, 24, married, born Scotland
Margaret Robbie, 21,wife, born Scotland
Jane Milne, (age unreadable) mother in law, widow, born Scotland
William Milne, 17, single, born Scotland
So maybe that is the family. More digging and delving needed I think !!
Thanks again
Kindest regards
Tracey

Thanks Wozzle. I think that`s them :)
I have been doing some internet wandering in the last couple of days. I think my next step is to trawl through the MI to see if I can find the elder William`s ( born 1842) death. He was alive in 1881 census but Jane was a widow in 1891.
Kindest regards

Hi again everyone :)
I think I have been looking at the wrong family. This is definitely correct:-
William Milne, 38, cartman general, born Stonehaven, Cumberland.
Joan Milne, 32, born Hebburn, Durham
James, 8 (and eleven twelfths, very precise !) born Hebburn, Durham
William, 5 (and seven twelfths) born Gosforth, Northumberland
Ella Robina, 3, born Gosforth, Northumberland
I have just got the MC for William and Joan. When William and Joan were married in 1901, his father is William Milne (deceased) a farmer.
I have found two possible births in 1873 where the fathers are William Milne, and are listed as farmers:-
William Milne born 25/4/1873 at Windford, Cookney. Mother Isabella Stott
William Milne born 27/10/1873 at South Altons, Nigg. Mother Mary Elmslie
Any help, hints or pointers in the right direction gratefully received. :)

HI Tracey :)
there is a wyndford farm approx. half way between cookney and stonehaven
on modern maps , this is to the north of stonehaven
did you get this information from william milne's birth certificate(25/04/1873) ?
1881 wyndford fetteresso kincardineshire
william milne 35 farmer(66 acres) born fetteresso kcd
isabella milne 33 wife born fetteresso kcd
william milne 7 son born fetteresso kcd
isabella stott 74 mother in law retired farmers widow born banchory duk(?) kcd
scotlandspeople has william milne , senior , farmer , wyndford parish of
fetteresso , died 20/03/1896 at wyndford intestate(no will)
inventory(of estate ?) stonehaven sherriff court
although not proof positive it does match what you have so far

Hi Ev :)
I went onto SP and looked at 1873 births and there were 4. I know from William`s WC that his father was also called William and was a farmer and was deceased. So of the 4 SP results, only 2 have William`s as father. One in Cookney and one in Nigg.
The one in Nigg has the mother as Mary Elmslie. The Cookney one - Isabella Stott.
Do you have any ideas how I could work out which is the right family? I have credits left on SP, it`s just knowing where to look and at what ???
Thanks for the help. I need every bit I can get !!!
Regards
Tracey

what you have so far born stonehaven scotland c1873 , father william(died before 1901) who was a farmer that 1881 census seems to fit very well
proving it might not be easy :(
looks like isabella milne(nee stott) died 1893 cookney KCD born c1846
if the father william died 1896 it might be worth looking at his death cert. to
see who signed it off

Hi Tracey
A few questions.
What date was William's marriage in 1901?
What was his address at time of marriage - and his occupation ?
What was Joan's maiden name and her father's name - and her address and occupation ?
What were the names of the witnesses ?
Have you seen William's death certificate - and if so what what details were given for his parents names or occupations ?
Susan.
-
Hi Susan, :)
William married on 27/6/1901 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Jarrow, Co Durham
His address at time of marriage was 6 Swindon Street, Hebburn, Co Durham
His occupation was cartman
His father was William Milne, a farmer (deceased at time of marriage)
Joan`s maiden name was Robertson
Her Father`s name was Alexander Robertson , a ship plater(deceased at time of marriage)
Her address was 9 St Andrews Street, Hebburn, Co Durham
No occupation for Joan (but in the 1901 census, they were both living at Swindon St, William was a boarder and Joan a domestic housekeeper)
The witnesses were James Robertson and Ann Beaton
James Robertson was Joan`s brother and he married Ann Beaton in 1906 (South Shields, Q3, 10a 1472)
I don`t have William`s death cert. I assume he died in the NE of England. Do you think it would help?

Hello to Ev as well, I seem to have missed your last message when I answered Susan ::)
what you have so far born stonehaven scotland c1873 , father william(died before 1901) who was a farmer that 1881 census seems to fit very well
proving it might not be easy :(
looks like isabella milne(nee stott) died 1893 cookney KCD born c1846
if the father william died 1896 it might be worth looking at his death cert. to
see who signed it off
Would William Seniors` death cert be on SP? I`ve only just started working with it, and don`t exactly know how it works.
Kindest regards
Tracey
-
And another thing that might make a difference....but I`m too stupid to work it out !!!!
???
Joan`s parents and older sibs were born in Scotland:-
1881 census
Alex Robertson, 35, born Scotland, ship plater
Rebecca R. Milne 36, born Scotland
Ann, 7, daughter, born Scotland
James, 6, son, born Scotland
Isabella, 4, daughter, born Scotland
JOAN , 2, daughter, born Hebburn, Co Durham
Living at 31 Hood St, Hedworth Monkton and Jarrow
Thanks for helping me, before my head explodes !!

hi tracey
there is the following death on scotlandspeople
william milne died 1896 cookney kincardine born c1845
now if we get lucky his son william may have signed it off
did your william milne sign his marriage cert. ?
could the 2 signatures be the same ?
ev
-
Hi Ev,
It looks like the whole MC is in the same handwriting.
But I have William`s signature on the 1911.
Would I be able to get the death cert you mention on SP? Can I view it online or do they have to post it to me?
My hubby reckons that I sat up in bed last night and was saying "put Hebburn in and see what it comes up with" ::)
Tracey
-
you can view the certificate online at SP for 6 credits
ev
-
Hi Ev,
I have looked at it and I think the signatures of the son William are the same. I will p.m. you.
And...he died of narcotic poisoning !!
Kindest regards

have replied to your PM
you can post small portions of a certificate on rootsweb without breaking
copyright for handwriting ID or parts that are hard to read
ev

Hi Ev :)
I will try to put the signatures on for others to have a gander and see what they think.
Tracey
-
Hi all, :)
I don`t know if this will help me figure out which of the two families is mine, but I have found census results for both on SP:-
Cookney Milne at Wyndford, civil parish Fetteresso
1881
William Milne, 53?, farmer of 66 acres, emplying 1 man and 1 girl, born Fetteresso, Kin
Isabella Milne, 33, Fetteresso, K
William Milne, 7, son, "
Isabella Stott,74, mother in law, widow, retired farmers widow, Banchory D, Kin
and then next door at Wyndford Cottage is Janie Milne, widow, 74, retired farmers widow, born Maryculter, K
1891 still at Wyndford
William Milne, age looks like 46??, farmer, born Fet
Isabella Milne, 43, farmers wife, born Fet

-
have now received your emails and will have a look at them
one more thought
can you find either of these william milne's in scotland in 1901
if so then it can't be your william who was in england 1901
ev
-
If it helps, the William you have found, son of William, farmer and Mary (Elmslie) is still at home on the farm with parents for the 1901 census:
William Milne 70, farmer b. Nigg
Mary Milne 50 b. Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire
William Milne 27, farmer's son b. Nigg
Elspeth Milne 21
Jessie Milne 11
Helen Milne 9
Lillie Clunas 29
Barbara Newlands 20
James Taylor 29
Charles Scott 22
William Laurence 26
Address: Farm Dwelling House Altenst On Altens Road, Nigg
Given you have found potentially, your William down in England (right place/occupation etc), I think you can eliminate the above William perhaps.
Monica :)

Didn't see your post Ev - we're thinking down the same lines ;D

here is one

and the other

Ev, Tracey has put up these signatures on the Deciphering and Recognition Help Board www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,412958.0.html
Concesus seems to be that they are the same signatures :)

Hi all
:) :) :) :)
Woweeee.
It looks like the family from Cookney is mine !! My William was definately in the NE of England in 1901.
Ev - in the first email I sent I mentioned that I was going to try to get the signatures onto the other board, but I forgot on the second one. Sorry if I wasted your time.
I am going to go back and check all my info again, even though I`m sure it`s right.
To all of you, and especially to Ev, a big, big big thank you.
I wanted to find out as much info as I could, as it`s my Dad`s 70th Birthday soon and I hoped to get everything printed out and give it to him as a present.
Kindest regards

Hi Ev, ;D
I did wonder if there was a connection with the Robertsons. I will look into that further !!
I got William Senior`s Inventory from SP. Have a look at this signature and tell me what you think.
I hadn`t seen the 1851 census bit :)
And a belated thank you to Monica for finding the 1901 for the Nigg Milnes, proving that this particular William isn`t mine. ;D
-
Hi the Nigg William Milne is actually my family tree. He was born in 1830 and had a twin sister named Helen. I'm in the process of following other family members so any in fo would be great. William was actually a brother of my great great grandfather he was the only one I could follow so far.
Jeannie Milne
-
Hi Jeannie,
I haven`t had my internet connection for the last 6 days so am a bit behind ::)
When I was looking into my WM, I couldn`t decide between the Cookney William and the Nigg one, so I bought a few things on SP for both.
I will pm you. I think you have to have 3 posts to reply to a pm though.
Kindest regards
Tracey
-
Oh Ok That is why I couldn't reply to your PM directly. Good to know. Thank you.
Take Care Jeannie

Hi Tracey and Jeannie
I have been looking through this thread
I am searching my husbands tree
His grt Grandmother was Helen Milne Mearns b 31.3.1851 daughter of George Mearns and Jane Codenhead of Fouden
She had an illegitimate child to James Mitchell
Helen went on to marry James Howie and lived at 7, Trinity Road Brechin they had 6 children James,John,Mary Duncan,Margaret N,Helen, and Charles
do you think there could be a family connection
Elizabeth
-
Hi Elizabeth None of these names look familar to me. I haven't done brothers and sister line though so I'm not positive. I've only just begun to go down that road.
Good Luck Maybe Tracey has a connection.
Take Care Jeannie
-
Hi Elizabeth :)
Sorry to say, none of these names ring a bell with me either.
Good luck with your search.
Regards
Tracey
-
Thank You Both
It was the Milne that took my eye
I have a lot about this family Just wondered where Helen's middle name came from
Elizabeth
-
Just to go back to the question about the 1891 census where there is a Robertson listed as niece - she is the daughter of William`s sister, Jane and her husband John Robertson.
I keep hoping that a relly will google one of my lot and find them here :)
I live in hope
Regards
Tracey
