Hi there. I understand that Nicholas is a fairly common surname but I am decended from John Moxon Nicholas (b. 17 feb 1800) and was after any information on them. i am underthe impression they were from the Cabridgeshire area.
Cheers Chloe

Welcome to Rootschat!
As you say, Nicholas is a pretty common name, so we really need more information in order to help you. I can't see a John Moxon Nicholas on the IGI so have no idea where to start.
Have you found him in any census? Did he marry - if so when where and to whom? Where were any children born?
Where did you find his birthdate?

I'm not at all convinced by your online tree.
Starting at the top:
In 1901 Herbert Nicholas age 7 months was with his parents Trew Moxon Nicholas 35 (not just Moxon as you show) and Agnes Annie Nicholas 34 all born Downham, Cambs. Also in the household was a visitor Amelia Sennitt 37 single.
In the 1881 census which you can find on www.familysearch.org, True Moxon Nicholas 15 is in the household of his widowed mother Ann Nicholas 45 b Downham, with her father also in the household, John Moxon 70
Free bmd at www.freebmd.org.uk shows a marriage of Ann Moxon and Trew Nicholas in Ely registration district in the March quarter 1860. If you don't have this marriage certificate you need it to confirm Trew's father's name as there was more than one Trew Nicholas in 1841 who could have married Ann Moxon.*
In 1861 Ann Nicholas 25 was with her husband True aged 31, and in 1841 a Trew Nicholas 11 was with Trew 40 and Rhoda 40
As the Moxon name doesn't seem to come into the Nicholas line until 1860 I have doubts about John Nicholas born 1800 having a middle name Moxon, but more seriously I also doubt that he was a direct ancestor of Herbert Nicholas
I can give you full census details if you need them.
David
* Actually this marriage is on the IGI at www.familysearch.org, on 1 Feb 1860 at Downham, where Ann's father is John, and Trew's father is shown as Trew, which as I suspected above, rather blows your John Moxon Nicholas out of the water
-
Righto. Yep your definately onto something here!! The only information I had on the Nicholas line was what my grandmother had told me so clearly some of what she said was wrong. Hopefully I can sort some of it out
-
No John Nicholas baptised in Downham in 1800 but Nicholas and Moxon do seem to be common names in the PRs.
Have you tried the baptism index on the Cambridgeshire Family History site? It's under "Searchable Databases" and covers the eriod 1801-1837

I think John Moxon Nicholas is where Chloe's grandmother went wrong, as I'm not sure that he existed, and if he was born in 1800 is unlikely to show in Cambs FHS Baptism Index 1801-37. Downham baptisms have been extracted onto the IGI up to 1876
Going back from the known to the unknown, which is the only way to go unless you're looking to research someone else's tree:

One thing that's puzzling me is a marriage on 21 Feb 1863 in Downham between Trew Nicholas (father Trew) and Ann Nicholas. I can't work out how this fits in, although in 1881 there's a Trew 40 and Ann 39 living in Downham, but I can't find his baptism c1841.

There is a December quarter 1839 marriage in Ely district of True Nicholas - possible bride Mary Easy. (I would have checked Camdex, but it doesn't want to cooperate at the moment).
-
I can't find the marriage of True and Mary in Downham in 1839. They may have married in another village and Trew jnr may have ben batised there. The first baptism in Downham for a child of True and Mary seems to be Joseph on 28th April 1844.
