Hi Everyone
I am trying to discover when Sarah Sturge of Frampton Cotterell married ? England.
She was producing children as Sarah Sturge from 1699-1703 with her employer Samuel Holder [from Frampton Cotterell PRs] and I know she died as Sarah England in 1725 as I have her will.
I have no information previous to 1699 and I have no idea of her age or whether she was single or a widow when she married.
Any help on Sarah or suggetions where I can look would be most welcome as she has been elusive since the early 1980s.
Thank you
Wendy :)

Have you checked GLS Registry Office for Frampton C's Bastardy Bonds? Might help pin down and likely date if some children were registered before she married. Overseers of the Poor were responsible for making sure illegimate children were supported by the father.
Might be worth checking Parish Records for Settlement & Removal Orders.

Hi gene-genie
No I haven't and I will do so.
When I last looked at Sarah it was pre-computer days and meant a trek from Leicestershire [even further now] but I will certainly try.
Thank you
Wendy ;D

Frampton Cotterell records are held by Bristol Record Office

Hello!
I know this is a VERY, VERY late reply but I think I'm related to this Sarah Sturge. Do you have any other information you could share with me? I think I may have her father and mother's information (as well as siblings) I'd like to double check to see if I have my sources correct.

Hi squishmich
What a surprise as I posted this 10 years ago. :o
Sarah Sturge has been a brick wall for 35 years as I discovered most of the information in the 1980s. Here is just a little of the information I have collected over the years. Some pre-computers!
My ancestor Christopher Sturge b 1699 in Frampton Cotterell was the only one named [as her son] in Sarah England's will of 1725.
Sarah is an enigma.
I have found a daughter Sarah Sturge in the Quaker records but there are numerous Sarahs and my grandfather stated that there were reputed to be Quakers in the family. Lots in and around Birmingham linked to the Cadbury & Fry families also the Player tobacco family. Not my branch though I think. They all start in Frampton Cottrell in the 1400s with John Sturge Lord of the Manor.]
As a Sturge, Sarah only appears in Parish Records for Frampton Cotterell in her relationship with Samuel Holder, Christopher's father. This may well mean that she may have been a young widow. Apart from Christopher, it seems her 3 other children died young.
Did she work for Samuel Holder as a servant and bear him four children? In the household were both Samuel senior and junior. Not sure which one, if any, fathered her children.
As Sarah England, she left a will leaving all her goods and chattels to "my son Christopher Sturge" in 1725.
Last Will and Testament of Sarah England 1725
""God having been pleased to afflict me with bodily sickness and I being apprehensive that I shall soon quit this life and fearful that contests may arise after my decease I do order this my last will and testament to be put down in writing as a witness of what is now my will and desire whilst I am yet living and in my sound senses.
Imprimis: I bequeath my soul to the infinite mercy of God who gave it to me.
Item: I give and bequeath to my dear son born of my body and known by the name of Christopher Sturge now living at his dwelling house upon Frampton Common in the parish of Frampton Cotterell in the county of Gloucester his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns all my estate real or personal and all my worldly goods whatsoever whether now in my possession or due to me from other persons.
Item: I likewise appoint, my said son Christopher Sturge my whole and sole executor of this my last will and testament revoking all other wills by me heretofore made.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my mark this first day of September in the twelfth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King George in the year of our Lord God 1725.

Hi Capetown
I also found earlier Christophers. The trouble with my Sarah Sturge is proving she is the same person as the one mentioned in all the records.

The following Sarah has the same date as the will left by Sarah England. Could this be Sarah? Is she too old to be having children in 1703? A re-check of the PR is needed to see if it is mar or bur.

Hi Capetown
Thank you got your information. I will add it to my notes for Sturge in my tree. Pity she is called Sarah but I suppose she could have been Mary.

Hi Capetown
Yes, thank you. I have the inventory of Christopher's household goods etc. Years ago I visited most relevant Record Offices [pre-computers]. I also was in touch with someone who was descended from the Bristol Musical branch. She gave me copies of the many interesting trees and documents regarding the Sturge branches, including the Quakers of Gaunts Earthcott. Tanners were part of that branch. There are lots of Sturges in that area.
