Hi. I am after any information on the Ryan family. Parents were John Ryan and Honora Finn. Children - Edward Ryan, John Gubbins Ryan and Leo Ryan. I think John died in 1970 and Leo died in 1952. Need to confirm deaths and any marriages. Any help appreciated.

Hi Lisa,

Just reminding chatters that you have posted a number of requests about the couple JOHN And HONORAH and while the children you are inquiring about today may not have been researched here before, many other aspects of the family have.

It may be a help to either link your previous posts or summarize what you do already know to save wasted search time in duplication. :D

Do you have any information about Edward's death?  I guess his mother's death cert in 1900 or father's in 1932 would give you more information.

Cheers

Hello Ryan researchers

I was so excited to read your chat! I had "lost" John Andrew  ;DRYAN from NZ but now have "found" him through your messages.  He was born in Bendigo, emigrated to Otago NZ early to mid 1860s and at some time returned to Victoria. I wonder if his mother, Bridget Theresa RYAN (nee HENNESSY) and sister, Catherine Eleanor RYAN, also moved to Victoria?

His father, Edward (sometimes recorded as Edmond) Gubbins RYAN, died in Dunedin in 1884. He and Bridget married in Bendigo in 1857. Edward was born c1832 in Ireland.

Did John Andrew and Honora have only the three sons?
Does anyone know anything of Bridget and/or Catherine?

Thank you!

Welcome to Rootschat, Ryansearcher.

Here are links to some of the other threads that Lisa23 has posted about the Ryan family. I don't know if they'll be helpful to you or not, but you may find them interesting.

One of those threads answers your  question  about children for John Andrew and his wife.

I'm having a look to see if I can find anything else for you.

Hi Ryanresearcher,
I cannot remember whether or not I have passed these details on to Lisa 23.
Will put them up again anyway.
These are the burials of the twins at Mortlake cemetery where, as you see, Honorah is also.

The index number on the list is 195
Name  RYAN, Norah. She was aged 3 months and the comment says  Daughter of Honora RYAN  (  index number193).

The index number on the list is 194
Name RYAN, Patrick. He was aged  3 months and the comment says Son of Honora RYAN ( index number193)

The index number on the list is193

Name  RYAN, Honora Born Abt. 1867. She died on 6 Nov 1900 and was aged 33.The comments read  Mother of Patrick ( index no.194) & Norah (index no.195); sister of Edward FINN ( index number196).

There are a great many RYAN's in the area's cemeteries.

I can't see a marriage for a Catherine Sophia Ryan up to  1920. There are literally dozens and dozens of Catherine Ryans marrying.

I've also searched for her death in all the records just using the given name Sophia and the father's name John, and nothing shows.

I also tried just searching for her death using the parents' names only.

Hello All....

Not sure that this fits in with your dates but it may help explain the Gubbins and Ryan connection.  John Ryan (Landowner of Cross House, Parish of Pallas) married Ann Gubbins (sometimes written Anne).  They had 5 kids before Ann died.  Ann is buried in the Oola cemetery in Ireland.  I have visited her grave as well as the house where they and the family lived before leaving for the Australian goldfields - Bendigo Creek, later named Sandhurst and then Bendigo.  The 5 kids were Laurence Gubbins, Edmund Gubbins, Lucy, John Gubbins and Robert Gubbins.  The father John remarried in Bendigo but I have no further details of him recorded.  I have birth / death dates for Edmund as 1861 to 1884 but given the death date and place is the same as that provided by Ryan Researcher I am thinking 1861 has to be an incorrect birth date.  He married the sister of a Mrs Haslett.  One of their descendents recently wrote a book in NZ about the Ryans.  I am heading back to NZ (currently working in Canada) at Christmas and can probably get my hands on her email address, if anyone wants it.  I think she charges for printing but not much more (say $20?)...going by memory.

John and Ann's daughter Lucy married a Daniel Moran in Sandhurst and they along with Lucy's brothers all followed the gold rush to Central Otago.  Most the boys went into the bar trade - Laurence running the Bendigo Hotel in Alexandra.

Lucy and Daniel are my great grandparents and my family still run the farm in Central Otago that they established after the golf rush.  Lucy and Daniel are buried in the Drybread cemetery.  The Morans and Ryans remain close - so much so that we have had combined family reunions....the next one scheduled for 2012 in Central Otago.

Regards
Mary Moran

I'm sure that Ryansearcher will be pleased to have that information, and wikll hopefully respond on here when she sees your post.

You will be able to send her personal messages on here.....no email addresses allowed on board messages for obvious reasons... . .but first you'll need to have posted two more messages on the thread.

Thanks Sue.  :)

One more request if anyone could do a look up - does marriage database name parents? If so I would love to know parents of Bridget HENNESSEY/HENNESSY married Ed Gubbins RYAN in 1857.

I am so grateful for extra information I have found in the last month thanks to Rootsweb contributors - wish I'd joined sooner!

Thank you all :-*

Parents of bride and groom are not detailed on the marriage indexes.  However the parents' names and fathers' occupations along with the places of birth of the bride and groom are shown on the marriage certificates.  There is a facility to purchase online and immediately download at

You will need the registration number above.

Hi All

Lucky enough to be heading to Ireland today!  Will watch the Irish beat the Wallabies (as the only kiwi in the group going I have to say that) in Dublin and will then head up to Limmerick and Tipperary to do some research - especially Winifred and George  Moran (their son Daniel married Lucy Ryan), Ryans and Gubbins.  If anyone has particular research centres, churches or people they can recommend please let me know.

Regards
Mary

Lucky you!
Have sent a personal message re some recent personal research, Mary, so check your inbox.
Cashel Emly parish records are held at Tipperary Family History Unit - there is no facility for personal research but you can commission research and collect it later.

I have found more information here than someone's earlier research found at the Nicker church. If you would like to get in touch we can avoid paying for the same information.

Have fun
