Hello M
I don't know what information you already have on this couple. Would you like to say if you have any census informaton for them, and which years, to save us looking up information you already have? I guess you have seen a census to get their approximate birth years and birthplaces. Have you seen the family on the 1901 census and want to go back from there?
Marriage registration:
GRO reference Sep Quarter 1882 Southampton 2c 7
BUDDEN Jane Marion JOHNSON Harry
Birth registration:
Dec Quarter 1865 Elham 2a 810 BUDDEN Jane Marian
possible birth reg for Harry (there are several but this one looks most likely)
Mar 1862 Portsea 2b 371 JOHNSON Harry

I see from your other post on the Iversons that you already know Jane's parents were Charles Budden & Lydia Iverson http://www.rootschat.com/links/072s/
These are the 1881 censuses for the Budden family, you can see them free here:
Jane - 1881 census RG11 Piece 1214 Folio 35 Page 22 http://www.rootschat.com/links/072q/

Will have a look for Harry Johnson in 1881 census and earlier, but as it's a common name you would probably need to get Harry & Jane's marriage certificate to confirm Harry's father's name and occupation

I looked at the enumeration page, and it gives the following information:
Royal Navy ship "The Diadem" - 32 guns - Captain - James H Cockburn Esq.
At sea Lat. N 48.29 Long. W 6.40 North Atlantic
To get further back you will again need his marriage cert to find his father's name

I think this is probably Charles in 1841 as he is in Boldre which was given as his birthplace in 1881 census, and is only 2 miles from Lymington which he gives as his birthplace elsewhere

If that's the right family, then here they are in 1851, but Charles is not at home - at 15 he may already have gone to sea, can't see him in the census

Here's the Harry/Henry that looks most likely in 1881 going by his occupation. In later census he was a boilermaker, so I expected to find him as an apprentice in 1881, however this one is a Ship's rivetter, and should tie in as this description from http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/b2.html shows:
Boilermakers: This is a description from a current trade site and is just as applicable to our ancestors, with alowances made for modern industry. The original occupation stemmed from making - boilers (!) and they were rivetted together, so the boilermakers were also rivetters.

unfortunately not with his family so no confirmation of parents, but there is a George Johnson also lodging there, possibly his brother, so will look for the two of them together in 1871

This looks very promising, brother George and father a Boilermaker:

JOHNSON
Thomas head 43 Assistant Boiler Maker
Ann wife 42
George son 14 Porter (errands)
Eliza dau 12 Scholar
John son 10 "
Harry son 8 "
Charley son 3 "
all born Portsea, Hamps.
the family is still there in 1881 but minus George and Harry
You will need certificates to back all this up, will leave you to digest it all!
Kind regards
Barbara

James 27 Jun 1800 works at Sowley (The age and place of birth fit the above James)
The above entry has been overwritten with:
William SHIRVAL and Elizabeth nee BUDDEN married Boldre 17/6/1820
son William 1820 (baptised Boldre 16/7/1820)
Jane FRYER was buried at Boldre 2/9/1816 aged 55.
It looks like the Rev Comyn wrote the surname as BUTTON while the later vicar wrote BUDDEN.

Hi.
This is the family I have been researching for years. Charles & Lydia daughter Lydia married Joseph Oatley.
They had 5 children, when I asked Uncle Joe when his father married he replied”1923 I was best man at their wedding, Charles could not get married to Lydia until Annie his 1st wife had died had died”
Charles Budden lost a leg in an accident, when he was on board ship; a Cable broke & whipped across & cut off his leg. He was a coastguard, as were his brothers see
