Hello,
I'm not to up on Staffordshire geography as I am from Yorkshire. Would it be likely that someone from Yoxall would end up in Brewood workhouse in 1861? I am 99% sure that my GG Grandmother is the Matilda Upton in there. On her marriage certificate it says her father is Thomas Upton (birth certificate not yet obtained). There is also an Ann Upton in the workhouse at the same time (of the age to be her mother). On the 1891 census I have found a Thomas and Ann Upton living in Yoxall, again of the right ages roughly. Both state however, birth in Yoxall. My GG Mother always states her birth place as Cannock Chase or Brewood (depending on which record I am looking at), but from the Workhouses.org site this appears to be the same place.
Appreciate any advice from local experts! Thanks!

Hi Standardcrow,
The Thomas you found in 1891 seems to have been previously married to an Elizabeth - they're already shown together as married in 1851 (HO107/2015 117 8 ), so I don't think he's a very likely candidate.
Did you notice that Ann in the workhouse was shown as unmarried in 1861? If Matilda was illegitimaten then it's not impossible that she just made a father up when she married (or named her stepfather, or grandfather). Have you found Matilda in 1871 at all? I'm not having any luck in spotting her.

That is a very good point. Bit dumb of me really. I don't know that Ann IS Matilda's mother, just have a Dad's name. I cannot find Matilda on 1871 at all, in 1881 she was already married to her first husband William Cranage Jennings in Burntwood Edial and Woodhouses. In 1881 Emma was working as a domestic servant. I belong to the second husband Arthur Thomas (also known as Abraham Arthur) Carratt, when she moved up to Yorkshire. I have a suspicion that if I could find Emma and Matilda in 1871 they may still be together as I am convinced they must be sisters.
Thanks for your help, and of course if anyone knows anything else about the Upton girls then please do let me know! This is a picture of Matilda.

I still can't find Matilda in 1871 - wondering about the Matilda Moreton born Brewood in service at Cannock though. There doesn't seem to be a birth registration in that name and I can't find her in 1861 either.

It's definitely, a possibility. Although that would be funny, as the head of the house's job looks distinctly like Grim Reaper!

OOh, I'd not thought of the IGI because I normally only use that for pre 1837. Confusing though because Matilda was older in the 1861 census by 3 years. Plus in 1881 Emma is still listing herself as born in 1857. I do hope there aren't two Ann and Emma Uptons in Brewood. I hate it when that happens! I'm only just beginning researching my family history you see, so sometimes the obvious doesn't come to mind. That definitely looks like them and would strengthen my suspicion that they are sisters and that Ann is their mother. I'll have to wait a while til getting Matilda's birth registration to confirm, I'm concentrating on another branch right now but thanks for the help.
I thought that was the right BMD as well, but thanks for posting anyway jacquelineve.
Looks like I need to see the parish records, then! Maybe some vicar will have written a putative father in small (it happened on one of my other lines and was oh so helpful!)

Looking at the 1861 image, I definitely think Emma is 11.
According to the IGI, Ann also had a son Charles in 1849 but a quick FreeBMD search suggests that he died as early as 1849.
Finally managed to find Ann and daughter Emma in 1851: HO107/2016 611 7
It shows Ann as daughter to John Benton - I'm guessing she could be his stepdaughter.
Christening Ann Upton 3 Jul 1825 Burntwood, mother Mary
Marriage John Benton - Mary Upton 31 Dec 1832 Cannock

Thanks for this Tati,
I'd missed your latest reply. I picked up Matilda's birth certificate and she was definitely illegitimate and born in the Brewood Workhouse :(. The new information you have provided will be very useful.
