Title: County Asylum Cemetery
Post by: darealjolo on Friday 11 September 09 11:11 BST (UK)
In Brentwood. Is anyone near to this cemetery please to get a photo of a grave for a Elijah Moss who died/buried 30th November 1898 age 52.

If anyone can do this it would mean so much.

Thankyou

Joanne

Hi

According to this

http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/result_details.asp?DocID=946346

at the ERO there appear to be no gravestones that have survived for former patients.  The site is currently being re-developed as housing - if you google 'Warley Hospital' you will see many pictures of the old hospital etc.

Are you sure he was buried in the hospital cemetery?  There are a couple of others nearby - might be worth enquiring of Brentwood BC - they have a telephone number for enquiries on their website

Indeed the old Warley hospital site is now a housing estate.

Actually, I've just checked and the ERO seems to have very good records for Warley - the burial regiater is available to view on line and Elijah Moss was inded buried there 1898.  They seem to have patient case records etc. as well - unfortunately not viewable on line

I'm actually a Postman in Brentwood and can confirm that the Warley Hospital site is a new housing developement.. However the site is very large and I do know that there is a converted church on the site. I'm pretty certain that there are still some gravestones in that area on a vacent lot of land that the children use as a playfield?.. Also Warley Hospital is still a working hospital, as I said the site is very large and though the main building and church have been developed other parts havent.. Try getting in touch with the hospital as it should be on an NHS list somewhere and ask if theres any other burial sites on the land or nearby as I know of at least two church yards that sit across the road now, but may have been part of the hospital back then??

I'll pop by the converted church and local grave sites surrounding the land sometime next week and let you know if I find anything.

Kind regards
Matt Ellis

Post me your email address and I'll send the tree owner a message asking to get in touch... oh and looking at the tree now its appears its one of Elijahs daughters - Adelaide Mary Moss that your related to.

I'm off out now so there will be a delay in any responces.

If only I had luck like this seaching for my own family members...

Kind regards

Would someone be able to post link to the online Warley burial register at the ERO please, I can't seem to find it and would love to see if my GGG Grandfather James Hurst is on it, James died 1901 at the Essex County Asylum but unable to find where he was buried so far.

You can view the register for free by going to the SEAX catalogue of the ERO.
https://www.essexarchivesonline.co.uk/Default.aspx

First register.

Top right-hand box labelled Document Reference. Type>>> Q/ALc12/3
Elijah appears on Image 71 of 106

For other registers, in the search box type>>>  warley asylum register
Then choose the register you wish to view.
I cannot find one for James in 1901, but try yourself

The burial ground has not been built on it is now just an area of grass and trees. See this side by side map view.
