Hi Chrissy
Is this info from the original image of the household entries from SP or from Ancestry's transcription of the census? Similarities are too strong. The Henry, 8, that you show for Matthew's son actually shows as James, again matching Martha's household :-\
Is the James Galbraith who shows as lodger the future husband of Martha? Their marriage shows on IGI on 01 FEB 1864 in Dunoon, Martha indexed as Penn.

hi monica ;D
this is from ancestry..oops I meant james, on matthews return.
I too wondered if this was martha's hubby to be james galbraith.
I did have the death cert for martha from s/p om the puter, but lost all my images due to computer blow up.
yes she was said to be a penn..i think her father was thomas and mum was martha motherwell.

Hi Chrissy
There does seem to be at least a 10 yrs difference betweeen Martha and husband James Galbraith. I think this is them in 1871:
Martha D Galbraith 60, head, Lodginghouse Keeper b. Ireland
James Galbraith 50, husband, Labourer In Gardens b. Ireland
James Cooper 28, lodger b.Coatbridge, Lanarkshire
Address: Blackpark Davidson's Cott, Dunoon

I think Matthew is a ghost and doesn't exist ;D
Seriously, I think you need to look at the original. I would guess that Martha has been entered in error as Matthew Pain rather than Martha. She probably shows under her maiden name and her children are Davidson. Again, the transcription of it has probably read ditto under Pain which is why the children show under Davidson Pain.
There is also no Martha Pain showing on the index on SP, just a Matthew Pain ::)

I went and had a look for this after we spoke in chat other night. I agree with Monica!
Having thought about this often the name Matthew is pronounced as Mattha which in my accent sounds not unlike Martha.
The kids match up except for their place of birth with those I found for you before. You know they were born in Scotland so the Ireland entry apart from Martha is a red herring I think.
There's no census for a Martha in 1861. I think there is no mystery man - just a very misleading ennumerator!
