George Ward born 1867 in Yorkshire (birth not registered until 30 Aug 1882)was deported back to England about 1918 soon after his wife Ann (nee Drury) burnt to death in Adelaide, Australia in 1918.
George's father was John Ward born 1842 in Yorkshire and mother was Elizabeth Hobman born abt 1845 probably from Leeds Yorkshire.
Ann's father was Tom Drury born 1851 in Yorkshire and mother was named Sarah Ely born 1851 in Yorkshire.
George and Ann Ward had a daughter named Adelaide May Ward born 11 May 1899 in Leeds and died 17 March 1966 in Adelaide South Australia. She married Harold Ethelbert James Skinner in South Australia on 28 Aug 1918. It is believed her family disowned her for "marrying someone who wore a brown suit".
I think this may mean that Harold Skinner was a Puritan. Harold and Adelaide were my grandparents. any help please on George Ward and his family would be great.

George Ward born 1867 in Yorkshire (birth not registered until 30 Aug 1882)
Are you sure??? Seems extremely unlikely. Have you got the birth cert? What does that say about it?
-
Where does the info re Adelaide birth in Leeds come from? I cant see it in the indexes. There is an Adelaide Ward (no middle name) bn 1899 in York , and 1901 shows her as a daughter of an Annie Ward, married but no husband with her. (RG13 4336 140 22).
And there is a marriage with a George Ward and an Annie Drury on the same page in Oct/Nov/Dec 1898 in York

Hi there is a lot of mystery surrounding George Ward. he was my great grandfather and his daughter Adelaide was my grandmother.
i am only going on family information.
I believe he came to Australia without Anne his wife and daughter around the turn of the century. They came out about 1909. Adelaide Ward was definately born 11 May 1899 in Yorkshire and died 17 march 1986 in Sth Aust.
Anne came to Aust with daughter Adelaide and they departed London to Sydney 15 May 1908 on Orient royal mail ship 'oroya'?
Anne commited suicide or was murdered by fire in 1916 (changed-now probably 1918)- Her husband George Ward was deported soon after.
She was living at Union St york at time of marraige.
1901 cencus has Anne Drury living at 13 Clifford St Leeds with daughter Adelaide .
I am pleased to see some help being given here. I am at my wits end with them

Hi,
Do you have George's marriage certificate? If so what age does he claim to be?
If he was born in 1867 then it is unlikely that his birth was not registered until 1882; perhaps he was not baptised until 1882. :-\

Adelaide Ward was definately born 11 May 1899 in Yorkshire
In Yorkshire - not necessarily Leeds?.
So the 1899 York birth looks as if it is her, and the 1901 Leeds census that I found also. But it seems you have that already. (Clifton Street, Leeds)
You mention an address at time of marriage - the marriage I found was in York Reg District - so the Union Street you refer is in York?
If you have the marriage cert it will give George's father's name and occuption, as well as George's occupation, all of which might help find George earlier. Also as Nanny Jan has mentioned, George's age.

I don't know if this is of any help, but the whole family travelled together to Australia in 1909 - details as above. George is listed as a Sawyer.

hi dee thanks for your help .
how do you know that they came together to Australia. You put details as above?
-
Apologies Terri. I should have quoted sailing details as per your reply No. 3
I looked up the details on Findmypast, which has Geo, Ann & Adelaide all listed as departing London for Sydney.
Dee

thanks for that. At least it has cleared up one mystery.
Ann died in a house fire in Adelaide in 1916 (changed-now probably 1918) and from family rumour it seems George was considered as having murdered her. We think he was deported but no proof. I am having a lot of trouble finding out much about him. .Your help is really appreciated.

Terri, I'm just checking inbounds from Australia to see if I can find out when George Ward came back here.

hi if its any help I think Geoge's parents were John Ward born abt 1842 in Selby and Elizabeth Hobman born abt march 1845.
George had brothers Arthur born 1874, John born 1866, sisters Annie born 1881 and Lucy born 1888.
Probably all born in Selby.
George was apparently born 1868 birth reg. 30 Aug 1882 (aged 14) a miller at Kyme St York. Thats about the extent of my knowledge of them.
-
Terri, have you ever been able to get a copy of Ann's death certificate to see what it said. I'm not familiar with Sth Australia Archives. I know we can get the Victorian Archives online here. If you were able to get that, it would maybe help to see whether there was a Coroner's report. Just a thought.

You are so good!!!. Anne was buried at North Road Cemetery in Nailsworth, Adelaide on 25 January 1918. But she was buried as Ann Drury, not Ward.
South Australia is really hard to get records from - the rest of Aust is quite easy.
There was probably a coronial inquest which may be mentioned in The Advertiser or the Register of the time but I am having difficulty there also.
Thank you so much for your help so far. I think I may have to go to Sth Australia myself to find out. (about 2000km away by car.)

now i have just noticed a discrepancy about the time of the fire 1918 not 1916

There is no death registration in South Australia for Ann/e/ie WARD wife of George WARD in 1916. My interest in your quest was sparked as 1916 is the year of death for one of my OH/s South Australian WARD ancestors - Anne WARD wife of John Thomas.
I see you are now saying 1918 :-\
It is certainly not difficult to obtain records from SA. You can purchase transcriptions of death certs from SAGHS and another source.

There is no death registration for Ann/e WARD wife of George WARD in 1918 or for an Ann/e DRURY in South Australia.
Have you searched the online newspapers for the period which include the Advertiser
http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home
No headstone at North Road Cemetery under WARD or DRURY so in an unmarked grave :-\

Hi cando- do you think your Wards may be interacted with mine?
Things are getting more interesting and more complicated by the minute.
Most of my info has come from family rumour so i am really struggling here.

I think this is George's birth certificate.
Births
George Ward
march 1866 / Selby
Vol No: 9c / Page No: 610
John W Ward
June 1866 / Doncaster
Vol No: 9c / Page No: 539
Marriage
John Ward/ Elizabeth Holman
March 1864 / Selby
Vol No: 9c / Page No: 719
1871 Census
RG10 / 4735 / 46 / 22
Millgate, Selby
John Ward / head / 29 / Agr Labourer b. Wistow
Elizabeth / wife / 26 b. Leeds
John W / son / 5
George / son / 3
the enumerator has 'dittoed' both boys as being born in Leeds. I think this may be an error. Selby is not far from Wistow.
Terri, if you were ordering George's birth certificate I would state the parents names. If it is the wrong cert then you will only be charged £3 as opposed to £7 - that's if you want to order the certificate of course

My OH WARD's are a very small family...only two brothers emigrated in the 1860's from Suffolk and it is well documented and validated. Descendants are buried at the North Road Anglican Cemetery.
If you require further help with searches in SA you are more than welcome to contact me by pm to avoid muddying the waters on this thread. I do not live in South Australia but have fair knowledge of what is available....with an emphasise on the fair ;D ;D

Terri, I think I would try and find Ann's death cert. Without that it's difficult to work forward. It might also be worth buying George & Ann's marriage cert.
I have crossed out George's birth details. I must have been seeing double late last night. As you say there are no births registered Selby, but there are 2 possibles registered Pontefract.

I have found the report of Annie WARD's death in the newspaper the Advertiser in January 1918. I have also found her death registration which was registered with surname WARDE ::) The death certificates in South Australia in 1918 give little information.
All has been pm'd to terribrown.

Hi Terri,
We have corresponded before. There is a newspaper article relating to the death of Annie. She died in the Royal Adelaide Hospital on 24th January 1918. The following year her daughter put a notice in the paper. Adelaide had married Bert Skinner by this time. I believe Annie died about a day or so after the fire.
She was buried the following day.
Also on the Powls I have seen on the web an article written by John Powls in 1841 and he is 16. He talks about his life and also parents granparents and great grandparents. Have you seen this.
Regards Jenny

Hi. Yes I have both of those. The article about him as an apprentice cordwainer is really interesting and gave me a few clues to his links with the Auty family (Ann Auty being my 5th great grandmother).
George Ward is reputed to have been deported after the death of Annie Drury but I can find no info about him- except that her family did not like him much. George and Annie were my great grandparents.
It is really great to get messages from people (like You). Every bit helps. Thank you so much
