Hi,
I am looking for descendants of John Hope Cotterel GUNTER b abt 1852 in Hammersmith England, he came to NZ between the time of the 1871 census being taken and April 15 1874,when he married Johanna ALLINGHAM, in Christchurch.
They had 10 children
Mary Ann b 1875 (my Great Grandmother)
Hannah b 1877
John b 1879
Elizaberth b 1882
Alice b 1885
Harry b 1888
Caroline b 1890
William b 1893
Charles b 1896
Helen b 1898
Have some names for the childrens spouses throught the bdm site. But cannot find anyone in NZ with the surname GUNTER that is one of mine. I have even sent letters to the 12 people whos surname GUNTER is published in the "White Pages" several have replied, but no luck yet.
The family lived in the Christchurch area and some of the names pop up in "Papers Past"
John died in Christchurch in 3 June 1913, and Johanna 3 June 1939, both buried there.
Johns parents are Henry (Harry) GUNTER and Mary Anne ALLAWAY (Have certificate) and he has a sister Mary. They seem to have stayed in England.

Perhaps the GUNTER sons of John and Johanna, didn't produce any male heirs to carry on the name ?
I don't see a marriage for Harry GUNTER (also checked "Henry" GUNTER).
NZ online index has a death for
1961 - GUNTER - Harry - 73 years (born circa 1888)
Also a military file at Archives NZ (Wellington) for "Harry GUNTER - 1914 -1918".

Archives NZ (Wellington) hold a Coroner's Inquest File - April 1966 - for William GUNTER.
Also military file for William GUNTER.
Marriage ???
There is a William GUNTER marrying in 1921 to Margaret Jean BOWDEN ... however the death record for this lady (1939), shows she was aged 60 years - born circa 1879 meaning she would have been considerably older than your William GUNTER.
[Also another William GUNTER marriage - NZ BDM law means I can't give the details in this thread - but if this is your man, then he would have married around age 40 ???]

Yes, unfortunately all this information has only yielded a few descendants. It is always difficult when searching "forward" ... and we are also hampered by the type of detail we can provide in a forum such as this.
As I mentioned earlier, there were quite probably no male GUNTER children, to carry on the family name. ?
I can't see anyone who is currently researching any of these families ... but you never know, there might be descendants out there, who recognise the names, and may get in contact ? :)

Thank you so much for all the info and work you did, yes maybe you are right in that none of the sons had heirs to carry on the name, I guess I will start looking for the girls who married and their children. I know some of them did have kids, as my sister recently told me a story about our Mum meeting one of them.
Can you give me any info on how you go about getting the probates?

Yes, there are probably quite a few additional children born to the daughters ... but only births up to (today's date) 1909, can be searched for in the online index.

I'm not sure where you are located in NZ, but if you have access to Archives NZ in Christchurch, then you can view the records for free. [Otherwise there is a fee for having them sent to you ].

Hi. Just letting you know I am related to John Hope Cotterel Gunter. John Gunter married Ada Elizabeth Hussey. They had three daughters, Gladys died, Thelma (my mum who is still alive at 93 and Doris is 86.Thelma has so many stories about the family so would love to share them with you. My sister Philippa has just started the family tree for the Gunter side and I am doing my father side which is Whall.

I would really love to make contact, my Great Grandmother was Mary Ann GUNTER, she married Albert Charles WHITFORD and they had 6 (5 living) children, Alice, their youngest is my Granny, unfortunatley anyone who could tell me anything have passed away.

Hi Gail, I was so excited hear from you. I rang my sister Pip and Mother Thelma to tell them. Have asked mum several questions about the family. She was born in 1916. She said she remembers two sisters, Hannah who worked in town doing housework and Alice. I think she is excited as well! Will ring her again tomorrow and see if she remembers anymore things to pass on

How wonderful to hear back from you, and how great that your Mum remembers family members.
As far as I can remember Hannah and Alice are younger of the siblings.
If you are interested I have photos of Johanna and John GUNTERs headstones, and also Mary Ann and Albert Charles WHITFORD, allthough if you live in Christchurch you may have seen them for yourself. (these photos were taken by a kind "rootschatter" who lives in the area)

Hi Gail, We dont have any photos as we didnt know much about the Gunter side until now. Mum tells me Harry, Charles, Helen, Elizabeth and Caroline never married. I am going to Christchurch at Easter to have time with Mum who lives in the same house she and Dad built.

I am researching the tree of a descendant of Alice GUNTER who married Joseph DANIEL in 1906. She thought there was a German connection but if I have the right line in the Ancestry family trees, the family was in England for a few gererations.
Does anyone know of the significance of the "Hope Cotterel" name appended to John GUNTER?

Mary Ann Gunter, married Albert Charles Whitford. Their first daughter Eva (1899-1975), who married Frank Robert Negus, and they had one son, Robert Henry Albert Negus (1928-2017) who had 5 children - Christine, Bruce, Robyn, Gail and Keith.
Robert was my father; he was a talented horseman and musician.
