We are looking for further information about the Grenville family from Brighton. Isaac Grenville, a butcher, was born in about 1775 in Brighton. We do not know who he married or the names of his children, except Isaac born c. 1802, who married Rebecca Moore of Alciston. They appear to have had a number of children. We are particularly interested in their son, George Grenville, born c. 1827 who married Eliza Randall, born c. 1827, on 15th March 1859, in the Countess of Huntingdon Chapel, Brighton. George was a butcher at 87 St. James Street, Brighton until after 1881. Rebecca died in 1883, after which George moved to London with the Hiscock family, where he continued his business as a butcher until his death in 1907.
Can anyone provide any information on this family, please?
According to the 1891 and 1901 censuses, George was uncle to either John Hiscock, born 20 July 1839 in Lambeth or his wife Sarah Ann Hiscock (nee Hayden), born 2 March 1841, Ryde, Isle of Wight. We cannot find how he is uncle - can anyone help please? The Hiscocks kept the Quadrant Freehouse, Brighton, in the 1880s.
Another puzzle we have is that there is a Jewish connection, probably through the Hiscocks or Haydens. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sarah

Do you have George in 1871? P1380 F153 and 154
87 St James Street. He has two sisters living with him
Annie 24 and Ellen 35. Both unmarried but they could have married later. He also has a niece looks like Laniza (but then so does his wife's name) surname EVES. A Farmer's daughter age 16 b London. The extended family is worth a look though it would have to be much earlier to have a nephew born in the 1840s!

Actually I see that the records are reversed on the 91 and 1901. There seems to be some confusion about which man was the uncle! Maybe worth looking at it the other way.

Andrea,
Thanks very much for your input. We have been trying to look at both possibilities as to who is uncle. We have the censuses for 1871-1901. Despite what it says on the 1891 and 1901 censuses, George Grenville would appear to be the head of the household, since he was trading as a butcher from each of the addresses. Since we have found no evidence that George and Eliza had any living children, it appears that they may have contributed towards the upbringing of the Hiscock children, one of which is said to have gone to Roedean. Certainly, at least some of them went to boarding school and Louise married Herbert Trangmar, a Hove solicitor. We are descended from Ada Hiscock.
Thanks

Have you tried the Roedean archivist? I am actually Archivist for one of their rival schools in Sussex and we have quite reasonable records of pupils and their guardians!

Trangy,
Thanks for the info - we had a look at the web-site and printed it off. It is good to fill in more of the details. If you are researching Trangmars, Louise, nee Hiscock, and Herbert Trangmar had a son, Herbert Leiceister Trangmar, who drowned as a young man.
Thanks

Hi Jane,
We are delighted with this information. We have hit a brick wall on the Grenville/Hiscock connection, so the possibility of another name is well worth looking at.
Many thanks

Hi Trangy,
We do not know exactly when he died, but a relative thinks that he was about 21 -so in about 1928. If you find anything about his death, can you let me know please (and vice versa!).
His mother, Louise Mary was born around 1874, to John Hiscock, born 20 July 1839 and Sarah Ann Hiscock, nee Hayden, born 2 March 1841. They were married on 23 April 1861, at the Register Office, Isle of Wight. We have those three certificates. John was born in Lambeth and Sarah was born in Ryde, IOW. Louise was the fifth of nine children. Leicester was my g.g.grandmother's nephew. Louise and Ada (her sister and my g.g.grandmother) attended a boarding school in Hurstpierpoint. If you would like any further info about this branch of the family, please let me know.
We are still desperately trying to find a connection between the Hiscock and Grenville/Greenfield families - so if you stumble on this, please let me know!!
Bye

Hi Tangy,
re your PM. The information was from the Sussex Marriage Index, so would only give marriage's. Siblings might be found by checking out the 1841 census, unfortunately I haven't got a copy or by checking BVRI & then parish records of the area.
