Title: Edward McDouall
Post by: Cynfelin on Wednesday 09 September 09 16:00 BST (UK)

I would appreciate help with tracing Edward McDouall. On his death certificate dated 1854 age 65 he lived in Hackney he was an attorney's clerk and died of typhus. His daughter in law Ellen McDouall was the informant.I have found on the IGI a Edward McDouall b 27 Aug 1794 to Edward McDouall and Elizabeth. He was baptised on 7/10/1794 Saint MARY St Marlylebone Road, St Marylebone London.

How do I go about tracing Edward's roots? All the advice you can give will be appreciated.

Hi Wozzle,

Yes, that is him. I've researched the family from there onwards, but my problem is linking him with a family pre that census.

Hi Wozzle,

Thanks for coming back. Yes I do have that information as well. Finding his birth place and parents is the grey area.

Hi.
Would this Edward McDouall be any relation to a Edwin McDouall?
My father born around 1903-07
I was born in Barncroft lodge Mile end road Stepney 1934, this was a nice name for the workhouse evidently lol.
 just found this out.
Looking for anyone who can help me with information about my father, I never knew him & the only information I have is he was presumed drowned, but no body was ever located this was before WW2 started
 regards to all Don McDouall

To answer your question, yes Edward McDouall is my  paternal  ancestor which you and I are descended from.

Edward's son Samuel McDouall married twice, his first wife was Ellen Stone and I'm descended from that line and you are from the second marriage Eliza Towersey also known as Cooper and are from Ernest McDouall's line.

Pauline McDouall has made contact with me and she did mention you to me. I'm so glad that you have made contact if you still have Pauline's details ,she ,I know would love to hear from you.

Just for the record this seems to be a very good website.
I live in WA Australia and have been trying to find out all I can  about my father.
Edwin McDouall. My sister June McDouall sent me a few years back a detailed account of the ways & wheres of my family before WW2.
Other then that knowing anything about my family is very little.
When war broke out I was nearly 5 years old & was evacuated to East Hanney then in Berkshire, my eldest sister went to Swindon & June the youngest went into a girls home.
None of us were claimed after the war, & I had lost contact with Esther my eldest sister now deceased, and finally made contact with June my youngest sister about 1997.
Our father is a mystery to us all, be great to know just what really happened to him. regards don McDouall

Hi

In answer to the original question Hackney parish baptism registers for circa 1790 are not indexed by the IGI and not part of the new release of indexed parish registers from Ancestry which begin in 1813. However Ancestry has put the parish registers images pre 1813 onto the subscription only website and it would be a matter of searching through them if you subscribe

http://landing.ancestry.co.uk/lma/default.aspx

Not to bad if the baptism was in Hackney but very difficult if it wasn't and the 1851 census entry is incorrect (parishes in Westminster are not covered by Ancestry)

If you think it is likely that Edward might have been the Marylebone baptism (Marylebone parish is covered by the IGI while other parishes are not) then this might be the Prerogative Court of Canterbury of Edward senior.

Will of Edward McDouall, Linen Draper of Burlington Arcade , Middlesex
Date 06 February 1833
Catalogue reference PROB 11/1812

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/

However so far all the evidence of your Edward points to the 'East End' of London not the 'West End' (relative terms at this point since all of this was Middlesex with only the square mile of the City actually London) with his marriage in Shoreditch in 1810.

Hi Valda,

Thank you for the information. I agree, that it is the east end of London is where the family settled.

I'm afraid that I do not subscribe to ancestry. Can anyone help me further please. ::)

Hi Cynfelin.
That is interesting!
Perhaps you can tell me in what way we are connected as i have little knowledge of anything to do with my family before I was born; in fact very little to do with them afterwards lol.
All I can tell you is I have a sister June, who lives in London but we are not in contact (have not seen her since 1939) I had an elder sister Esther who died back about 10 yrs or so, we corresponded in later life but i have not seen her since about 1940. Esther has a family  in Yorkshire.
I have children, grand children , great grand children all live in NSW & Qld.
I live in WA Australia.
My sister June done a lot of research  as to our family going back to around the 15th century, made very good reading, if you would like a copy i can email it to you.
Thats about all I can say.
Would like to hear from your side
regards Don McDouall
