Sorry if I am being a bit thick, but is there a way of searcing the census by address rather than name? I am having no luck searching by name as it seems a fairly common name, but have got the address off the marriage certificate. I have tried a few sites, but they all appear name driven. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can search addresses on findmypast.

Any help you could offer would be great. I have a marriage certificate dated 8.8.1891 for George Richard Davis and Ellenor Cramman, age 21 & 24 respectively. George's father is listed as ' George Davis, Gentleman'. George Richard Davis' address is listed as 32 Bedford Street, Tynemouth.
I have also found George Richard Davis and Ellenor (Ellen) and their children on the 1901 census, at 10-11 Clive Street, North Shields, age 30 & 33, which ties in with the ages on the marriage certificate. George Richard Davis' place of birth is 'London'.
I have been trying to find his birth certificate, or failing that, him living with his parents on an earlier census, but have had no joy.
I have found several birth certificates for George Davis' in London for 1871, and have tried to cross-reference them with the census for that year, to avoid having to order loads of them. I have found them all on the censuses, but none with a dad called George Davis. Similarly, I have found lots of other George Davis' on the censuses, but again none with a dad called George Davis. I feel like I have hit a brick wall!!! I hope this is not too rambling - it would have helped if the dad had chosen a different name for his son!!

Who are the witnesses to this marriage- they can often be siblings or neighbours who can be useful to provide clues.

Have you discounted this family in 1871? It contains a George Davis father and George R. Davis son, of approx. the correct age.

What was George Richard's occupation on his marriage certificate?
-
George Richard's occupation on the marriage cert was 'electrician'. I can't believe you found that census entry so quickly - can you tell me how, I am obviously missing something obvious in my searches! I have spent hours night after night with no success!!!! That census entry surely must be him - so am I right in thinking that I now need to find his birth certificate to check it is the right mother and father? Thank you so much.

It would be handy to follow Jen's family through till 1901.....but I am having trouble even finding them in 1881 :(

Just repeating Carol's question - who were the witnesses to the marriage?
-
Sorry to take so long to reply, got unexpected visitors, now nursing a hangover on Sunday morning! Witnesses were Alexander Gall and Elizabeth Cramman, who I assume is Ellen's sister. What will you do with this info - I mean, how will knowing the witnesses help?
-
I pressed 'post' too quickly then - I wanted to say that I am learning so much about researching from the help you are all giving me with this - thanks so much!

Sometimes the witnesses are other family members and this can help to locate the right family in the census - as Carol said earlier
they can often be siblings or neighbours who can be useful to provide clues.
I am still struggling to find the 1871 family in any other census, and also I cannot yet pin down your George Richard in the 1891 census :(

George Richard Davis is on the 1911 census, still in North Shields, and his birthplace (found by trial and error index searches) is Forest Hill - which fits exactly with the one I found on the 1871.

Thanks for all your help, now the family is located on the 1871 census, I have a bit more to go on. It is strange how they all 'disappear' until George Richard reappears married on the 1901 census though - all I can think of is perhaps they went over to Germany, as Clara was born in Munich?!
-
I wondered if they moved anywhere(Scotland perhaps?) because of dad's job as a Lloyds Underwriter. Now they MUST Have records?
