Hello
I have a marriage certificate from 1849 Clerkenwell, London between Ann Vinn (widow) and George Rosher (widower).
I would like to know Ann's fathers surname. I have also attached the witnessess name. I think the witness is Elizabeth Gould. Is the fathers name George Gould ? Could it be George Green ?
Ann was born in Portsmouth c1802/03 on the censuses. Her mother was also named Ann who later married John Adey/Edey. I have seen a marriege on the IGI for John Adey to Ann Green in Portsmouth 1813.
Thank you in advance.

I think it's Green.
A Nancy Green was baptised to parents George & Ann Green in Portsea 23 Sep 1803.
Her first husband may have been Benjamin Vinn - died 1845 Clerkenwell.

Thanks for your reply Nell.
Do you think that Ann was short for Nancy in those days ?
If she was born Nancy Green did her father George Green die before 1813 then mother Ann remarries John Adey ?

Thanks for the Benjamin Vinn possibility.

Nancy is a common pet name for Ann, but in this instance Nancy was given as a her baptismal name.
Four George Greens were buried in Portsea 1808-12, no ages given and no way of identifying them. Ann Green remarrying - you'd need to see the parish register entry to confirm that she was a widow when she married John Adey, but again no way of knowing the name of her first husband since it probably would not say. :-\

Thank you for looking up the 4 George Green burials Nell. :)
Yes i will pay a visit to the archives to lopkup the marriage between John Adey & Ann Green.
I am so glad you have said that Nancy was a pet name for Ann. :D
I see that Mother Ann married in Portsea to George Green as Ann White. I know from her burial record that she died 1850 age 72. I see that there is a Nancy White born 1780 in Portsea. There is also Ann White born the same year.
I reckon she was born as Nancy White as it makes sense to name her 1st daughter Nancy Green also.

hi
Wondered if it could be like the nancy i was looking for the birth of for ages.
my dad and siblings called her aunt nancy but in fact her name was ann .
they presumed that nancy was her name as everyone called her that .
just shows how confusing people can get when others use a diffrent name for them
i have a few on my tree like that
