Hi I am trying to trace my 3xGreat Grandmother Bridget Flood (married surname Whittaker).
Bridget died in Armidale in Australia in 1900 with her age given as 81 years (so birth year around 1819). Her birth place is listed
as "Munstreven, Kildear, Ireland". I have interpreted this to be Monasterevin, Kildare, Ireland.
Her father's name is given as Thomas with her mother's name unknown.
There is some speculation as to her year of birth. At the time of her marriage in 1843 she was 19, giving a year of birth of around 1824.
On her youngest daughters birth certificate her age in Feb 1857 is given as 30 so a birth year of 1826/7. Also on this birth certificate
Bridget's place of birth is listed as Kildangan, Ireland. To me this strengthens the likelihood of her birthplace being Monasterevin.
Bridget's death certificate states that she has been in Australia for 60 years indicating she immigrated around 1840 but I've been
unable to find any trace of her arriving in Australia as yet.
On the https://brsgenealogy.com/ifhf/index.php website I found a Bridget Flood, born 10/2/1825. Father Thomas, mother Ellen Garten.
The address is given as Derryoughter, Monasterevin, Co. Kildare. The informants are listed as Peter Byrne and Mary Kelly.
Is there anyway I can prove that this is "my" Bridget??
Thanks :)

Bec,
You can never prove that is Bridget when going back that far but I would say thats a strong possiblity that the record from the Irish History Foundation is correct one especially around the date and the the father is Thomas.
There are two other Bridget Flood for that time if they are not Thomas then you have your record.
Do you know if Bridget emigrated from Ireland or was she living in England before emigrating?

Hi Ann Marie,
I have no idea if Bridget emigrated from Ireland or England...haven't actually been able
to find her arrival here yet. ??? I'm waiting for my membership card from the New South Wales State
library to come through to see if I can turn up anything there. So far everywhere else I've searched
has been a dead end.
She married an English convict (George Whittaker) but as he was transported here in 1835 and she didn't arrive till
1840ish (and would have been about 10 in 1835) I'm assuming they met here and not in England.

Bridget Flood married to George Whittaker is also my ancestor. I have that she was born between 1814 (based on the date in her immigration record) and 1819 (based on her death cert). She is the daughter of Thomas and Mary (who were deceased when she emmigrated in 1840). She was born in Munstreven Kildear Ireland (spell?). And she arrived on the ship Elphinstone on 8 October 1840. The passenger record states that she was Roman Catholic and could not read nor write.
hope this helps. :)

Beth

Beth!
Thank you for replying. ;D I have been trying to find when Bridget Flood emmigrated without success,
although still I'm not sure this is the right one. Am I reading correctly that she was 6 when she arrived
in Australia? If so that would make her 9 when she married George Whittaker in 1843. Young even for then ;)
The record I'm looking at is here http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/list.asp?series=NRS5316&item=4_4787&ship=Elphinstone The information on Bridget Flood in this record is on page 2 and you may need to copy the image and zoom in!
Can I ask which child of Bridget's you descend from? I have recently found that though she married George
and her first child, Mary Ann is recorded as George's, all the other children (with the exception of Joseph whose
birth record I haven't found) have been recorded with Joseph (George's brother) as the father. My second cousin
put it that "they may have had an interesting family life!" ;)
I had seen on various family trees that I've found on the internet that Bridget's mother's name was Mary but I wondered
if this might have been mis-transcribed from the 1825 birth certificate I mentioned in my original post where Mary was listed
as an informant?
Feel free to PM me and maybe we can compare notes! We're obviously related. :) I have several of the documents relating to Bridget and George and am happy to share info.
Cheers,
Bec
ps I have now found the "Unmarried female immigrant" record stating she was 26. Interesting there is such a wide variety of possible dates of birth.
-
Hi
According to the immigration record she was 26 when she arrived in Australia (i.e. born in 1814) however according to her burial stone. she was born in 1819. My guess is that either could be right but the reality is that she probably didn't know the exact year she was born. The birth certificates of her children put her age all over the place (for example the one for Ellen in 1857 states her age as 30 when really she would have been around 40).
And yes most of the birth certificates state Joseph as the father. Certainly it seems that Joseph lived with them and for some reason took responsibility for ensuring that the births were recorded. Since none of them could read or write its possible that they simply weren't that bothered about ensuring that the details were correct. But it is odd that I have a death certificate for Joseph that states that he died 11 Sept 1865 but George's burial stone states that he died 12 Sept 1865.
My only other thought is that Bridget was actually in a relationship with Joseph but married George - perhaps Joseph was already married in England. I don't know, but what ever the answer you are right , they certainly had an interesting family life.
The immigration record I am working from is attached (Mary as her mother's name is from this).
I am a descendant of Rosannah Whittaker who married James Scott. I have photos of Rosannah. Also I have found this photo on the web of a Bridget Flood who emigrated around the time that our Bridget did. I would love to know if this is her although I suspect that Bridget Flood was a fairly common name. http://www.irishfaminememorial.org/orphans/orphans.htm .

Hi Beth,
Yes I found that record after I'd replied to you. :)
Bridget certainly has a large range of possible birth years.
Have you seen George's burial stone? I thought he died in Inverell in 1874?
I had seen that picture of Bridget Flood but thought that since the Orphans didn't arrive until 1848 that
it was a bit too late to be "our" Bridget.
I am descended from Ellen. It was quite strange but I found she's actually buried in the town where I live.
We only live 3 blocks from the cemetery so I'd been driving past her for 10 years or so without knowing she was there. I visit her every month or so and put flowers on her grave. Bridget and Joseph are supposed to be buried here too but I haven't managed to find their graves.
Could I PM you my email address to get a copy of Rosannah's photo? It might give me an idea of what Ellen looked
like. I have a photo of Ellen's daughter (my great-grandmother) and it would be nice to compare her (Jessie) to her Aunt.
I don't suppose we'll ever solve the mystery of Joseph, George and Bridget but it's nice to "meet" another relation.
Cheers,
Bec

Hi Wrigbe
I have been reading What you posted to Malbec. I have Flood family that arrived on the 8/10/1840 to Sydney on the Elphinstone
They were James and Catherine with 3 children John 4, Thomas 3, and Bridget 6 so we have a connection
I would like to know if you found any more out about the family back in Ireland I have not got James mother maiden name I know it's Mc? do hope you can help Chatso58
-
Hi Malbec
we seem to have a connection but my Bridget is buried in Carcoar district N.S.W
The family seems to have settled in Carcoar and there are some relevant headstone inscriptions online at http://www.ozburials.com/CemsNSW/carcoar1.htm hope this helps
Cheers Chatso58
-
Hi Malbec
sorry I should have told you Bridget married Royal Atkins in 1856 and she died in 1868 in Carcoar if you have any information of this family back in Ireland I would love to know and I can't find out were James Bridget's father is buried I do have more info. if you are interested
Kind regards Chatso58
-
Hi Chatso58,
Did you know there were 2 Bridget Floods on the Elphinstone that arrived Oct 1840?
Yours is listed in image 2 here http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/list.asp?series=NRS5316&item=4_4787&ship=Elphinstone whilst the Bridget Flood that Wrigbe and I are descended from is listed in image 7 (fourth from the bottom).
Our Bridget married either George or Joseph Whittaker and is buried with one or other of them (it's VERY complicated!) in the Armidale cemetery.
So unfortunately I can't be of any help.
Cheers, and good luck in your search.
Bec
-
Hi Bec
do you think there is a chance that your Bridget could be my James sister Rob
-
Hi all,
I'm researching the bushranger John Vane who rode with the Ben Hall gang in 1863. The gang haunted districts around Carcoar during this period.
Parish maps show someone named Flood had a couple of blocks around Carcoar.
In this article there is a reference made to 'Flood's Mount'. The gang had recently held up a mail coach near Blayney and so it would most likely be around Blayney or Carcoar.
http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/3165982?searchTerm=flood%27s+mount+vane
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best,
Craig
-
Hi Craig
sorry I can't help you I have only just discovered that I have a connection to the Flood at Carcoar I will keep you in mind if I find out any thing
Robyn
-
Hi Robyn,
All I know about Bridget prior to coming to Australia is that she was born in Monasterevin (written as Munstrevin on her death certificate) in Kildare, Ireland sometime between 1814 and about 1825. Her parents were Mary and Thomas but both were deceased when she came to Australia. I have no idea about any siblings...sorry.
Craig, I am unable to help either as my Flood relative is from the Hunter/New England region.
Cheers,
Bec
-
Hi Bev
Thank you for clearing that up for me there don't seem to be a connection
Kind regards Robyn
-
Hi Bec,
I`m researching my own side of the Flood family from Monasterevin at the moment and came across your post.I`m actually from Monasterevin and can confirm that Derryoughter is actually a part of Kildangan which falls within the parish of Monasterevin so the likeyhood is that record is the one your looking for.I haven`t been able to trace back as far as you yet as there are a few seperate familys of Floods in the area.If you need any more info on the area don`t fail to contact me.
-
Hi All,
I have just come across your discussions about Bridget Flood. I am looking for information about a Sarah Flood. She married James Shepherd in 1871 and had 2 children prior to this marriage Sarah Anne Flood and Eliza Flood. According to Eliza's birth certificate she was 26 years old (born about 1843?), could not read or write and lived in Kangaloola Binda. I don't know when or where she was born but my hunch is her family would be around the Crookwell area and alter she had more children in Carcoar. Can anyone help with any information about a Flood family in that area?
Regards
pamela

HI pwm2
I have Flood's from Carcoar in my family tree do you know Sarah parents names?

Chatso58
-
Hi Robyn,
I don't know her parents names. I know that she had 2 of her children with James Shepherd in Carcoar and I was working on a hunch that she may have had family there. I cannot find a birth for her on the NSW BDMs. There is one listed with Caleb & Mary Flood as the parents but this is not the Sarah I am looking for. I cannot find a death cert for her either. Is there a Sarah in your Flood family? Any tips on how I might fund her parents will be much appreciated. Regards Pamela
-
Hello Pamela
I have checked all my research and have found on Catherine Flood's death certificate that she had 4 males and 1 female living and 4 males 1 female deceased when she died in 1891. unfortunately it does not give any children name's. and I can account for the other's but could never trace the living Female so may be it's your Sarah.
So Sarah would have died after 1891 if it's her I had a quick look but couldn't find her may be she remarried again.
and I don't have James's death certificate I could never find it
good luck Robyn
-
Hi Robyn,
I have ordered Sarah's marriage certificate to James Shepherd so hopefully it may reveal her parents' names. Here's hoping! I will let you know if it is Catherine and James. Thanks Pamela
-
Hello Pamela
Thank's I would like to know if you find your Sarah. her age fits in with James and Catherine other children. I have a birth registration that I can't find it make it very hard to find anything
kind regards Robyn
-
Hi Robyn,
I got the marriage certificate for Sarah Flood and James Shepherd but unfortunately no parents were noted and no age or place of birth for either. I might try to get the birth certs of their later children and see if that contains anything. Did you mention that you have a registration number for a birth cert for Sarah? I know Sarah was living at Kangaloola when her 2nd child Eliza was born and also when she married James. He is listed in the 1872 Greville Postal records as being a householder in Kangaloola but their next 2 children Mary & Emma were born in Carcoar. Any information about your Floods might help. Regards
Pamela

Peter,
I would be interested to see your information on Bridget Whittaker (nee Flood). I am her 3X great granddaughter.
I have her marrying George Whittaker at Patrick's Plains (Parish of West Maitland, County of Northumberland)
on September 22nd, 1843. George was the father of her first child but every subsequent child of Bridgets is listed
as having Joseph Whittaker (George's brother) as their father...but that is another story.
What I'm really interested in is your recording Bridget snrs death at Carcour in 1882. I have her death certificate
saying she died in Armidale, NSW on March 13th, 1900. I visit her grave every now and then as I live in Armidale.
Thanks,
Bec

-
Bridget snr went on to marry George Whittaker and died at Carcour in 1882
I will check further to confirm this is the correct husband of Bridget (snr) sister of JAMES and THOMAS (snr) children of JAMES and CATHERINE
-
I suspect not.
Bridget Flood aged 26 on the Elphinstone was a servant
who came out as a bounty immigrant.
"Sacred to the memory of George Whittaker who departed this life September 12th 1865
aged 65 years. Also Bridget Whittaker wife of the above died 13th March 1900 aged 81 years"
(take George's information with a grain of salt. I suspect it is Joseph buried there as the details on the headstone
match the details on Joseph's death certificate...it is a long and complicated story that I have yet to complete).
PKKIL's post above also makes no mention of Bridget snr having a brother James.
-
Dear Malbec
Please send me a PM as I live in Armidale.
Bridget was born 1814 so if she lived 81 years she would have 5 years missing if died in 1900.
I'll do more searching.
-
The Bridget Whittaker listed as dying Armidale 1900 has her Father's Given Name as THOMAS
This can't be the Bridget , daughter of JAMES FLOOD
There was another James and Catherine Flood from Ireland, she was the sister of the Publician at BALMAIN
-
That's right.
Bridget snr on the Elphinstone is listed as having parents Thomas and Mary, both
of whom were deceased. I suspect though that someone either misread or mistold Bridget
her mother's name (this is pure speculation) as the only details I can find for her parents are those that PKKIL listed
in a previous post.
-
Thanks,
If Thomas is listed then she is NOT the sister of JAMES and THOMAS
OR
They WROTE THE INCORRECT FATHER and it should have been JAMES
maybe we will never know
She could have been a cousin of JAMES and THOMAS
On her weeding certificate she state the father as THOMAS
-
I now have viewed the birth 10/02/1825 , marriage, and death certificate 1900 of the single female BRIDGET FLOOD arrived Sydney 5 October 1840 on "ELPHISTONE" as a BOUNTY IMIGRANT and married George Whitacker at Maitland in 1843.
Her father was listed as Thomas Flood Monasterevin district Kildare.
There is no evidence I can locate to suggest she could have been related to the James and Catherine Flood family that settled for the next 100 plus years around Carcoar but as she went towards the Hunter region Maitland and not west across the Great Divide with the James and Catherine Flood family and Thomas Flood snr I suspect that this Bridget might have only had the FLOOD name in common with the two brothers JAMES and THOMAS snr.
There was on the same ship a girl Bridget aged 6 daughter of James and Catherine who went on to marry Royal ATKINS at Carcoar in 1856 and there died in 1868.
see my previous posting of CARCOAR BURIALS.
What interests me is that THOMAS and WILLIAM get a mention but not JOHN or other brothers born after they arrived at CARCOAR like JAMES, PATRICK, or nothing other than birth of CHRISTOPHER.
Such is the complex interactions of siblings? even in the late 1800s.
I am still attempting to locate the death and burial place of JAMES FLOOD husband of CATHERINE.
Can anyoe with an interest in FLOOD FAMILY HISTORY assist???????
-
My ggg grandmother Margaret Flood (born 1787) was from Brownstown, The Curragh.

There is an interesting article here...
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/21656334?searchTerm=Whittaker%20maitland%20&searchLimits
(http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/21656334?searchTerm=Whittaker%20maitland%20&searchLimits)
that talks about Bridget Floods young brother Patrick being Britains oldest man in 1930 (when he died). His birth year however doesn't match up with that given by PKKIL but that's probably not surprising.
I also found this...
=http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/83491841?searchTerm=flood%20oldest%20british%20man&searchLimits= (http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/83491841?searchTerm=flood%20oldest%20british%20man&searchLimits=)
but I'm finding it difficult to find any record of his death in the Irish records.
-
If Patrick Flood (who died supposedly at the age of 115 in 1930) is Bridget’s brother, then it looks like he is not the Patrick, son of Thomas and Ellen Garten Flood. Here is a piece out of The Irish Times, Saturday, December 27, 1930 - the heading reads : "Funeral of the Oldest Man in Ireland". It is too long to transcribe but here is what I think is relevant to you :
"He continued to work until the time when the old page pensions (1909) were first paid. When he came to prove his age, it was found that no written record of his birth or christening was in existence. Other applicants for pensions who could prove their ages all said that Mr Flood was ‘a grown man’ when they were children and he got his pension. Since that time he has kept an account of his age himself, carefully noting the years."
Interestingly, when they tried to prove the ages of people in 1909, they looked at the 1851 census which had not been destroyed at that time - don't know why they didn't find an approximate age for him then. If he was born c. 1815, he could well be Bridget's brother and their births were not recorded in the baptismal records for Monastereven which started in 1819.
-
On further reading the Irish Times article, I really doubt that this particular Patrick Flood was Bridget's brother. It looks like he was born in Co. Wexford in Killegney near Enniscorthy.
"At midday on Christmas Eve, in the ancient graveyard at Cloughbawn, Enniscorthy, were laid to rest the remains of Patrick Flood of Killegney, who claimed to be the oldest man in the British Isles.
As nearly can be ascertained, he was born in 1815, the year of the Battle of Waterloo and all his life of 115 years he lived the uneventful routine of agricultural labourer in his native parish." I take it that the native parish is the Civil parish of Clonroche where Killegney is located.
Patrick does not appear in Killegney in the 1901 census (the Enumerator may have missed him) but he is there in 1911 with his wife Catherine (aged 70!). Bridget's descendents must have seen an article in the paper that a Patrick Flood had died (b. 1815) and, since she was long dead by that time and not able to confirm or deny, and since she must have had a brother called Patrick, they presumed that this was her brother. More than likely they didn't know the geography of Ireland and didn't realise that Enniscorthy is in Co. Wexford and not Kildare, where Bridget hailed from. They may not also have known that Patrick Flood was a common enough name in Ireland.
