Title: Military Marriage
Post by: Bardany on Friday 04 September 09 16:32 BST (UK)
My gr-gr-grandfather Edward McDonnell was married while serving as a gunner in the Royal Artillery in Ballincollig Co Cork. On 22/11/1859 he married Margaret Ambrose. On a subsequent birth record for his daughter he confirms the above details. The Registrar General for Ireland has no record and suggested I write to Ballincollig R C Church. I have now received a reply but they too have no record. I have now discovered that Ballincollig Barracks had it's own school and Church. If they were married there would there be an independent military record somewhere and if so where?? I would have thought that some form of record would have existed as I was able to find his wife's 1839 birth record. Can anybody help pleeeaase??

I have looked on the military marriages on findmypast for 1855 - 1865 but found nothing - however these lists wer not always complete.

You may find something on Edwartd's army record - do you have any idea when he was discharged? The army records are filed at the Public Records Office in Kew by date of discharge. Those before 1855 have been filmed by the LDS & you order & see the film at a local Family History Centre. Those after 1855 are in the process of being digitised & as I understand it, can only be seen at Kew.

Have you looked on the IFHF website www.brsgenealogy.com?

If you are  not familiar with looking for army records this is the link to start with
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step4.htm

If you need any help locating the reference for Edward's record, let me know, I can help. I've had to do it for 2 of my forebears [both Irish]. Then it's a case of going to Kew or arranging for someone else to.

I have downloaded the army birth indexes for McDonnell from findmypast. If you pm me with your email address I will send you the images; if any of Edward & Margaret's known children are on there, you may be able to get a birth certificate which may state Edward's regiment.

Josey, I already know his regiment. He was a gunner in F/9 Royal Artillery and was discharged after serving in India. He was discharged around 1874/5.
