Thanks to those who identified Port Priory as being Port Pirie, also David Evans from Port Pirie Regional Council who provided the details of my relative's grave. My great uncle Joseph Kennedy from County Wexford was indeed buried in Port Pirie cemetery in the common catholic section lot 95 grave 1 in 1943 (I hope common doesn't mean communal although it has a lease so I'm assuming it's just him). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone lives there could they take a picture of the grave and email it to me ?. ..or even a picture of the general area.
My mum and her sisters are in their 80s now but have really fond memories of their uncle Joe, he was their mothers much loved kid brother and they said she was devastated when the news came through that he had died in Australia... I think they would like to see where he is buried. I have a map from David but it's too big to upload however, the grave is on the right hand side of Callistomen Avenue heading towards Pine Avenue. It's the block of graves on the junction with Tea Tree avenue middle row, 4 rows back.

(I hope common doesn't mean communal although it has a lease so I'm assuming it's just him).
To the best of my knowledge a common grave is one shared by many, usually people who could not afford a burial service etc were buried in together. I found by own ggf buried in a common grave with 16 others in Ballarat and none related to him. His last days were spent in a benevolant society.
There are a few more experts on roots chat who might be able to confirm or deny that

More photos on these links however there is no listing for your Joseph KENNEDY having a headstone.

It is mentioned on the first link above that the The Port Pirie District Family History Group is currently doing a complete transcription of the Port Pirie Cemetery. This includes Photographing, Transcribing and matching up with council records. No email address only -

The Joseph Kenndy with the wife is not him, unless he kept it very quiet and the year is not correct either but thank for trying.
The regional council said there was a 100 year lease on the grave, which is why I assumed it was private ?, I;m awaiting an answer as to who owns the lease but maybe it's a government or council owned common grave. If so I don't think I'll mention that to the girls.
I had a look at the pictures of both common and reserved catholic plots and they both appear to have lots of gravestones but i guess there could be common plot there. It does make sense in some ways as being a seaman away from home he wouldn't have had anyone to sort things out and maybe he didn't have much money. Oddly though the map sent to me by David appears to show distinct indvidual plots, I did wonder if his shipmates chipped in or something because someone did write to my gran to tell her he had died and as far as my mum can recollect it was someone who knew him not a government official....who knows...anyway I think I'll write to the address given and see what comes of that.
Thanks to you all so far, if I discover anymore I'll add a message.

Red herring with the other reference to Joseph Patrick - I posted the death registrations to eliminate them. The title of the photos on the first link I gave is Common Catholic and Common Protestant Reserve It is the name of the area not a reference to the type of grave. It is an individual grave with a lease number. Did the Council give you the name of the undertaker? If so it would be worth contacting them to see what records they hold for Joseph's burial.
Pity the Council burial records database is incomplete. I think it best you contact the local group.
Cheers and good luck

Hi yes the funeral was conducted by Backstrom, I did google them and there were loads od them worldside but coudn't find any reference to Port Pirie one. I evenm have the name of the priest who conducted it, Fr Thomas.
-
Perhaps ask the Pt Pirie Family History group. They may know the history of the local funeral directors/companies. After all the burial was in 1943 and the firm may have been sold or simply changed its name.
The cemetery records online also give the name of the officiating minister/priest. These details are usually recorded in the cemetery burial records.

Got a reply from Port Pirie regional council and they said it's def. a private grave so that's a relief.

Hi Bevan5540
Welcome to rootschat ;D
The Council has updated the website as when I searched previously for maryland004, Joseph's 1943 burial record was not listed. They do have a notice on the cemetery database that not all records are listed.
I think the grave may be unmarked as his burial is not noted on the website which has photos of headstones etc. at Pt Pirie.

Hi yes that would be great. Hope I;m not too late. Regional council confirmed it is a private grave with lease that runs out in 2045. As you quote, lot 95 grave 1 is the location. I'd have thought if it was private it would have some kind of marker, someone paid for the lease so the3y mut have cared about him, Anyway if you can have a look that would be fab.

hi again. Yes I have been to the cemetery and the grave site was easy to find. It is an unmarked private site. A mound of earth only. Having a look was no problem as I was on my way there anyway.
