Title: GAMBLE, Tilshead, 18th Century
Post by: JillStatton on Wednesday 02 September 09 00:02 BST (UK)
Does anyone have any information for the GAMBLE family in Tilshead or the area?

My William GAMBLE is purported to have been born there c1780.  He was in Stanwell MDX by 1841 and I have all Census.

Any help appreciated.

I was unable to find a baptism for William Gamble, Gambel(l), etc in the Tilshead Parish Records around 1780.

Thanks for looking, Dave, greatly appreciated.

Did you happen to notice whether there were any GAMBLE or GAMBELs in the Parish registers at all?

Could your William be Levi William Gambling born 1780 Tilshead.
I have him as Gamble married an Ann Stevens (b1786) at Lambeth on the 30th August 1807 and living at Stanwell on the 1841 Census with 2 Children Samuel (1826) and Elizabeth (1827).
On the 1851 Census he appears to have remarried to a Fanny?

It is possible, Billgam, as Gambling is a likely alternative spelling for Gamble.

However, from Parish registers, there were 3 GAMBLE families in Stanwell in 1832:

Samuel GAMBLE (1821-1849) s/o William, = Caroline STEVENS d/o Solomon.
William GAMBLE (1812-1881) = Harriet
George GAMBLE (1810-1866) s/o William and Mary Ann (d.1846 (65) at Stanwell MDX.

George is my direct ancestor; he married Susannah ROBINSON and had 10 children, Susannah probably dying as a result of childbirth in 1852 (40).

I am assuming that the abovementioned 3 men are siblings and sons of the same William.  There was also Henry GAMBLE (1818-1837) whom I believe was also a brother, as well as the Samuel (15) and Elizabeth (14) recorded in Census 41.

William GAMBLE appears to have remarried in 1848 D/Staines to Frances HALL, the widow of James HALL who died 1845 in Stanwell.  Fanny had married James HALL in Buriton HAM on 29 June 1817 when she was Frances GAMMAN and was born c1795 in Petersfield HAM.

That's about as far as I have gone. except for children of the abovementioned brothers.  William and Harriet had a Levi GAMBLE (bp.1836) so it is likely that Levi was a family name.

How are you connected?  If you would like to correspond further re the GAMBLE family, perhaps we'd better leave the Wiltshire site.  Send me a personal message and I will provide an email address.
