Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone could help me with my research.
I am looking for information regarding EDWARD ELLIS and his wife HAPPY.
I have found them in the 1841 - 1861 census' and have varying information for them but it all seems too lead back too Hawkhurst, Kent.
I have looked on Family search and cannot seem to find any record of a Edward Ellis marrying a Happy.
The information I do have for them is:
Edward Ellis born abt 1788, Hawkhurst, Kent, England
Happy Unknown born about 1788, Hawkshurst, England died 1860, Maidstone, Kent
Childrent Include:
Happy Ellis bn 1811 - 1811 - Hawkshurst
Edward Ellis bn 1817 Hawkhurst
Richard Ellis bn 1826 Lamberhurst, kent
Ellen Ellis bn 1829 Lambershurst
Matilda Ellis bn 1830 Lamberhurst
Any information would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Kate, :)
There is a marriage on Mid Kent Marriages site for
31 January 1810 Edward ELLIS to Martha Burges at Hawkhurst
Cant see any others that look likely at Hawkhurst but the following is pronably what you are searching for
25 July 1808 Edward ELLIS to Happy Piper (sic) at Lydd
Regards Rog :D ;D

Two Baptisms in Hawkhurst for an Edward at about the right time:
1788 24th Feb Edward son of Edward & Emma ELLIS. Note: Pd.
1789 24th Oct Edward son of John & Margaret ELLIS. Note: Pd.
There were a lot of PIPERs in Hawkhurst!
This could be your Happy's Baptism:
1788 15th April Happy dau of William & Hannah PIPER. Note:Pd

Thank you both for your information, has been very helpful. I wonder why they would marry in Lydd and move back again too Hawkhurst to have children?!
Thanks again for your help.
Kate

Happy could have been in service at Lydd and married there as her village of residence.

Would be interesting to see who were witnesses at their weddings to see if any brothers/sisters were then I could tie in which baptism is Edwards. There seem to be alot of people researching the other Edward Ellis who doesn't have a Happy in their family, there seems to be a 50/50 split of who his parents are! Doesn't help me as I don't know which set of parents are correct ??? Oh well I Shall continue too hunt!

Hi Kate
I think copies of Lydd parishers registers, on film, are held at Folkestone library, which I can get to.
I'll have a look for Edward's marriage to Happy, hopefully there will be some extra info that will help.
Not sure when I can get there, possibly next week :)

I've been to the library today to look at the film of Lydd PRs, I think the vicar must have been saving ink, the entry is very basic ;D
The marriage was at All Saints, by Banns, Edward was a bachelor & Happy was a spinster.
That's all I'm afraid, nothing to help you with which Edward this is.
:(

Thanks for that Betty,
Maybe I'll have to reverse it and find out information from the other Edward Ellis' wedding to Martha Burgess, I am not giving up on this one yet! :-[
Your help has been great ;D

Two boys born about the same time with the same name in the same area could be related, ie first cousins, named after their grandfather.
So, assuming for the sake of argument the fathers of Edward bap 1788 & Edward bap 1789 were brothers, I had a look to see if I could find a John & Edward as brothers, in Hawkhurst.
1754 5th Oct Edward son of Edward & Sarah ELLIS
1755 17th Oct John son of Edward & Sarah ELLIS
Edward & Sarah had a total of 13 children baptised in Hawkhurst.
I can't see a marriage for this Edward & Sarah in Hawkhurst.
Possibly his baptism, in Hawkhurst:
1718 3rd Aug Edward son of William & Constance ELLIS
The records start from 1550, so I might be able to go further back with this family, if they are yours, so just yell if you need anything else :)
Re the marriage of Edward ELLIS to Martha BURGIS.
There might be something here that helps:
Edward was a bachelor, of Hawkhurst, & Martha was a spinster of Sandhurst. It was by Licence, & the witnesses were Wm BURGIS & Jane ELLIS.
I hope something in that lot helps you sort them out ;D

Betty you are being such a help...Thank you, Thank You ;D
I've done a little searching on the records I can get and i think you are onto something there with John and Edward being brothers, Hooray!
Also I cannot find any siblings called jane for the Edward Ellis baptised too Edward & Emma where as The other Edward has a younger sister called Jane so a little speculation leads me to believe that my Edward Ellis is the son of John & Emma Ellis..got there in the end.
Could you look through your records too clarify no Jane born to Edward & Emma? And then go back presuming that they are on the same line as Edward Ellis son of William & Constance?
Thank you again for all your help..

Edward & Sarah had the following children between 1743 & 1767:
Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Ann, William, Edward, John, Jane, Richard, Constance, Frances, Thomas & George.
This Jane baptised 2nd Feb 1758.
Edward & Emma only had two children baptised in Hawkhurst:
Edward in 1788 & Eleanor in 1791.
Edward & Happy had four, between 1817 & 1823:
Edward, William, Elizabeth & George.
John & Margaret, parents of Edward bap 1789 had 12 baptised between 1777 & 1798:
Sarah, Ann, Ann, John, Elizabeth, Fanny, Edward, Jane, Thomas, Charles, Richard, William.
This Jane baptised 8th Feb 1792.
****************************************************************
1711/12 10th Feb Martha dau of William & Constance ELLIS
1718 14th April Elisabeth dau of William & Constance ELLIS
(No note to say is these two are twins, or just baptised on the same day)
Another child in the same year:
1718 3rd August Edward son of William & Constance ELLIS
1702 25th Dec William son of William & Constance ELLISS
Note: Of Cranbrook. Born Nov 26th.
1707 10th Aug Mary dau of William & Constance ELLISS
Note: Born Jul 31
1709 25th Dec John son of William & Constance ELLISS
Note: Of Cranbrook. Born Oct 11
1704 16th April Thomas son of William & Contence ELLISS
Note: Of Cranbrook. Born Mar 18
As the further back we go the spellings vary, & given the spelling of Constance as Contence in 1704, this could be their marriage (in Hawkhurst):
1700 23rd Feb
William ELIS Otp
Content QUAIFE Otp
Perhaps the vicar was hard of hearing, or not local & couldn't understand the local accent, or it's a mistake in transcribing someone along the line.
So the Edward baptised in 1789 had a sister Jane.
The other Edward baptised in 1788 appears to only have one sibling. Possible, but unusual, so likely there are more children baptised in neighbouring parishes, so maybe a Jane lurking somewhere?

There's a good number of QUAIFEs in Hawkhurst.
Baptisms:
1650/51 5th Jan Constance dau of William & Constance QUAIFE
Note: Civil War period.
1674 5th Sep Constant dau of John & Anne QUAIFE
Note: Born Sep 4
I thought at first Constant is the same as Constance, but I notice another child called Faithfull, so Constant is probably right.
However, Constance bap 1650/51 was surely too old to be having children in the early 1700s, so perhaps Constant was the one who married William in 1700, & became known as Constance.

Whilst on the Ellis family of Hawkhurst, could anybody check out the details of John & martha Ellis possibly (Sinnocks), they had a son Edmund bap.29/7/1804 who married Dinah Drawbridge.Edmund and Dinah had a dau Caroline who married Hezekiah Eastwood. Hi Ken
Baptisms for John ELLIS in Hawkhurst.
The last one is possibly too young to have married Martha, the three in the 1750s may be too old.
The 1775 & 1779 could be the most likely.
The choice is yours :)
1763 3rd Mar John son of Thomas & Elizabeth ELLIS
1775 5th Oct John son of Charles & Jane ELLIS
1779 23rd Oct John son of Richard & Elizabeth ELLIS
1750 23rd John son of John & Ann ELLIS
1754 27th Oct John son of Richard & Sarah ELLIS
1755 17th Oct John son of Edward & Sarah ELLIS
1783 20th Apr John son of John & Margaret ELLIS
Do you have the details of John & Martha's marriage?

Hello Betty, It's been awhile,
All I have of John & Martha's marr. assuming he marr. Martha Sinnocks Marr. 1799 31/12 - John Ellis Ba Otp Martha Sinnocks Otp B John Start, Sarah Lake.
I agree I have two or three John's to choose from,
All I was trying to achieve was to link Caroline Eastwood nee Ellis, to the same Ellis family, eg Joseph Spice & Elizabeth Ellis, who's daughter Elizabeth Spice married Arthur Gray on 11/6/1765.
This would connect both the Gray's and the Eastwood's to the (Hawkhurst) Ellis family.
My 3 x G grandfather William Gray marr. Celia Eastwood 1858.
regards
Ken
