Title: Maloneys from Wexford in S. Wales COMPLETED
Post by: LizRainbow on Monday 31 August 09 22:21 BST (UK)
Trying to get more details on JOHN MALONEY.  He married Edith Thomas in 1923 in Maesteg, South Wales, and died in 1976.  Death certificate gives birth as 5 Mar 1895 Irish Republic.  I am told he was from Kisha, Broadway, and his parents were John Maloney and Catherine Boland, and that his birth certificate was 'lost' when the school burnt down.  He had brothers Richard and Patrick and a sister who married a Power.  Anyone know MALONEYs, BOLANDs, POWERs or a burnt down school from the Broadway, Wexford area around 1890 - 1920?  Any suggestions where to search also appreciated.  Thanks.

Welcome to Rootschat. Civil records in Ireland are complete (perhaps it was a copy of his birth certificate that was lost in a school fire?) and the indexes can be searched here-

Just to get you started, this looks very possible for the marriage of John’s parents:

Name: John Malowney
Name: Catherine Boland
Registration district: Wexford
Record type: MARRIAGES
Registration date - quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1883
Film number: 101254
Volume: 4
Page: 620

To order a cert go to http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm
And fill in the above details as well as you can fit them on the form. It costs €4 for a research cert.

You can also search the 1911 Census free at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Good luck with your research.

Dara.

Thanks all.  I did think the spelling of Maloney might be tricky - but lots for me to look up now.  I don't know any Maloney's further back, but this is what I have on John's siblings.
Patrick Maloney - worked in London, went to New York, did not marry.
Richard Maloney - married Hannah, children John (married, had a daughter), Patrick (worked in London, died around 2005) and Kathleen (still in Wexford?)
Sister Maloney - married Power or Powers, sons Patrick (lived in Ammanford, has a daughter in Newport, Wales) and John (was lobster fisherman in Rosslare, sold to London hotels, and had one arm!!)
Might be of interest to other Maloney researchers.

Hi

This was what I meant to put on my other reply but I forgot - too late at night!

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,403108.0.html
I don't think it does link up, but just in case any one else see's it'  Yes, I've been lucky with my spellings considering the variants and that they didn't all read and write.  Mine are always so far spelt like this.

Thank you for your extra information.  I Don't think it links but it will help me eliminate from those who emigrated.

Best wishes

Hi,

An estimate for dob of Patrick, Richard and Sister would be helpful. If you don't have that, the sequence of births can be useful for estimating. e.g. older or younger than John b. 1895.

Hi Dara,
Estimated Richard and Patrick born around 1890, but with the marriage you found for John Malowney and Catherine Boland in 1883 guess children could be from then on.  I found on the pilot.familysearch.org site births for Richard Malowney in Mar qtr 1884, or Richard Maloney Dec qtr 1886, and a Patrick Maloney in Mar qtr 1891.  I'll check back with family on those and hope to get more exact ideas for them and 'sister'.
Thanks for your help
Liz

New members usually need to make 3 posts before using PM system, so if Maria makes one more post here you should be able to send PMs back and forth to exchange email addresses, personal information, etc.
