I am stuck, yet again, with the death of Henry James Mitchell b 1854/55 in Winterborne Steepleton.
He was married twice first to Elizabeth Sargent and then to Elizabeth Mary Davis and I have him on the census's upto 1901. On the 1911 I have his wife and family but not him and his wife Elizabeth is not down as a widow, the only Henry I can find thats not in a family group is in the Dorchester Workhouse but the age is 65 about 8 years out. I have sent for two death certs with the correct age, one in 1922 Sherborne the other 1936 Dorchester but with various clues on the certs both are not him.
Any help or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Hi Westy,
Can't help with the death I'm afraid (in fact I hadn't picked up a second marriage but I tried to follow some of his family to see if they tied up with a Joyce Mitchell I was hunting for. Somewhere along the line the Mitchells that ended up in Affpuddle are part of my tree - including Joyce that went to Canada. I am still trying to work it out.
If I come across anything in my hunt I'll let you know.

Westy,
It's a long time between posts and you have probably found the death of Henry James Mitchell but in case you haven't in 1911 Census he was in the Workhouse in Dorchester together with his daughter Florence. RG14PN12388 RD264 SD1 ED13 SN9999
Hope this helps,

Hi Marion, even after all this time I have still not found the death of Henry James Mitchell, I did wonder about the workhouse but as Ancestry still has not got the 1911 census's available I have not got the workhouse census yet. I am thinking of upgrading my Genes Reunited subscription for a month which will give me access or I will go to Dorchester records office to see if I can view the workhouse records and maybe find he died there. Thanks for the info

Hi Westy,
Attached a slip for you - the only death I have ever found that seemed to fit in the way of birth and name was Mar Qtr 1944 in Dorchester area - birth date is a year out but that isn't much.
It seems that our Henry was blind which would account for why he was in the Workhouse.
Cheers, Marion

Thank You Marion for the slip, its very much appreciated, I shall investigate further with that info.
Hopefully you have proceeded further with Joyce Mitchell !!

Hi Steve
You're welcome - let me know if you prove his death.
No - Joyce is still an enigma, it would help if I knew the year she was born of course but all I have to go on is a photograph and a comment on a postcard by an Aunt and a couple of other members of the family! Like chasing fog in the dark!!

Hi Marion, long time between posts !! I have eventually sent for Henry's death cert from 1944 but not really anything to confirm its him, but I have a gut feeling it is. It was registered by A JONES of 8 Damers road (occupier) which is a similar address to the workhouse at No 4. I am trying to find a link somewhere to A Jones, he had a daughter Annie so looking for a mrg to a Mr Jones but no luck at the mo, not sure if its even female as it may be male. Will let you know of any progress

Hi Steve, Good to hear from you again - that's the nature of the beast - we write when we find!
There can't be too many Henry Mitchells that died in 1944 in Dorchester in Damers. We know he was in the workhouse so perhaps A Jones was an attendant at the Workhouse? I had a look for a marriage of Annie to a Jones after your message but nothing seems to tie up so it may just be there was no relation, although at times they often put details of who the informant was so obviously they missed that out this time.
Do you think you would be able to send me a copy of the Death Certificate, just for my records, if you wouldn't mind. If you want to send via an email address it would be 4 (*) (spaces replaced with .)
Florence must have come out of the workhouse as she had a daughter in the workhouse in 1911 and then went on to marry a Percival MOORE and have two more children, although I have a note from her grandson to say that Florence died in Damers Hospital. All a little complex! Let me know if you don't have those details.
Regards, Marion

Hi Marion, I will scan it and send to you, no probs
Also had a quick look and can't find a Jones marriage either but going to keep digging and will let you know if anything pops up even if I just throw it past you to see if you think any info is viable.
Don't have any details of Florence so anything that you have will be great.
We also have the Moore name in the family my wife's Grandmother was one, her parents were Henry's daughter Isabel Sarah Mitchell b1891 married Samual Moore b1880, must be a connection !
Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve.
Thank you for that re the certificate. If you do find anything give me a shout!
I'll give you some details that I have on Florence to begin with - and I have a question about Isabel Sarah.
As I said Florence was in the Dorchester Workhouse in the 1911 census. She had a base born dau named Dorothy Jessie D. MITCHELL on 16 Jul 1911 (who eventually dieD on 26th June 1992.) Then Florence married Percival MOORE in the Sep Qtr 1917 in the Blandford Region, and then had two children - Nora V MOORE (b Sep Qtr 1918 Blandford Region) and Waler C O MOORE b 15 Aug 1920.
Dorothy Jessie married Charles HARDY (which is where my relationship comes in - Charles was my 1st cousin once removed) on 14 Jul 1934 and they went on to have four children. (Not sure how many details of the family you would like!)
Re Isabel Sarah - I have her as one of 10 children to Henry James and Elizabeth MITCHELL - (with one child extra from Elizabeth from unknown partner). I have Isabel only down as Sarah, and as being born abt 1892 in Melcombe Bingham but no details on her marriage etc.
If you want any other information that I may have just let me know - might be easier if I send you a report of the details I have on Henry and his descendants - let me know.
Cheers, Marion

Hi Marion, I have printed your posts off and will take them home tonight to show my wife, she's more clued up than me as its her direct line. At least I know its the correct Henry this time as my father in law and his twin sister Mary both remember Aunt Jessie which I presume is Florence's daughter. I will ask her if she has any photo's, I know she has Elizabeth Mitchell (Granny Bet) so will send them if you are interested and any certs she has. I am on ancestry as stevewest1960 so I can always open the tree for you and you can see what info we have,
thanks, Steve
