Hi
Looking for the household of the Hickland family. I am unable to say who the parents were, but have been able to find these names that may be of help. Joseph born abt 1849, William abt 1840, Richard abt 1844 and David abt 1849, these brothers came to New Zealand in 1862 along with two sisters who became nuns.

Not sure what census you are hoping to find but 1901 is the 1st complete census for Ireland and only small fragments of earlier ones exist. 1911 census is online (free)-

Suzy,
There is no Irish census for that period but we have what is known as a census substitute. It is called the Griffith's valuation and was a survey of all property in Ireland for taxation purposes.
In Co. Antrim this was carried out about 1862. It shows what appears to be four Hickland families in the parish of Glenavy, all renting small farms.
Thomas townland of Ballyvanen
John townland of Aghadolgan
William townland of Deer Park
Thomas Townland of Fenmore.

Hi
Have you tried http://www.glenavyhistory.com/index.html it has a list of local churches. You could try and contact one of these to see if they have any records of the Hickland Family. Church records are you best bet for finding dates of Birth before 1864. Civil registration of Births start in 1864.

Thanks for the addvice. I was lucky enough to of come across a 1851 census or something like it for another Irish family, that is why I thought I could try my luck with the Hickland's.
Yes I have discovered the Glenavy site yesterday, very interesting.
Is there a on line site to trace people moving to Australia and New Zealand? I notice there were plenty on Irish people going to the United States.

All I know is they Left Ireland to Auckland New Zealand in 1862 As a news paper article says about the family movements, sadly did not have the parents names, but all the children's names and how they moved to the South Island and set up family life there.

Many thanks. Successfully downloaded and saved: another useful resource.

Thank you all
I was able to find a few more on the Hicklands in New Zealand via Papers Past. William came to NZ in 1862 on his own. Now I am lost on how and when did his brother Joseph come here, I found on the burial records he came here aged 27, so that would make it about 1876. I have been scrolling all the shipping records a few years on each side, and that is no easy task, and still no luck.
Both brothers lived in the same country town of Rangiora, North Canterbury.
William had two daughters who became nuns, and I have a feeling one brother was a priest back in Ireland.
What a shame about the census records.
Kind Regards

1901 is the first complete census for all Ireland- only fragments of earlier years survive and for 1851 some of County Antrim. It's available on many websites (just google '1851 census antrim') but here's one-

Thank you aghadowey I have found it now and as you say, it is very limited, unfortunately. I had hoped there may have been some of Aird or Carrowreagh.

Hi there
They have changed the website around a bit , but here is the link to what they have available:
http://ogsottawa.on.ca/?page_id=528
The total of what they have available appears to be on 243 pages, but the original PDF document I downloaded contains over 1100 pages. If you send me a PM with your email address, I will forward it to you and anyone else who would like a copy. It is about 9MB in size, so make sure your email can accept attachments of that size.
