I'm trying to find the birth father of Sarah Page b. abt 1856 Mendham, Suffolk.
Mother was Lydia Hazell/Hazel who married Charles Page in 1844. I think he died 1847. Lydia then married John Scotchmer in 1862. Sarah had a brother Alfred B abt 1859, sister Anne B 1860. In 1861 all 3 are listed as Page (living with John Scotchmer), then in 1871 listed as Scotchmer.
thanks in advance, Susan

Hi Susan
It looks as though John Scotchmer was the father if Charles Page died in 1847.
The children would take the mother's name normally, and after the marriage they took the married name.
I couldn't find a Sarah b in Mendham but I found the following.
Births Sep 1855
Page Sally Hoxne 4a 463
My sister-in-law is Sarah and only known as Sally.
Births Sep 1858
Page Alfred Hoxne 4a 459
May be a purchase of the birth cert will help. Is it worth spending £7 to find out?
Can be purchased online at

Thanks Wendy,
I think the purchase of the certificate is the next step. I saw Sally but wasn't sure it was another name for Sarah so thanks for the confirmation.

Hi Susan,
The Baptisms for Mendham shows the following
Parents John and Lydia Scotchmere children baptised 26/4/1868 (John a shoemaker)
Sarah born 1855
Alfred born 5/6/1857
Anne born 5/6/1859
Augusta born 1861
Arthur born 1865
There is also another Augusta privately baptised on 8/4/1864 of the above parents, but I can't find the first being buried. Not sure if the above helps.

Another baptism from Mendham register:
Thomas s/o John and Lydia Scotchmer
baptised 10th May 1868

Thanks so much for the info on the baptisms. This is definately the family I'm researching. Appears Thomas, Sarah, Alfred & Anne were all born Page, baptised Scotchmer. Augusta & Arthur were born after Lydia & John married. Only Alfred kept the name Scothmer though in later years.
Thanks again for your help.
Susan
