Map of Charlotte County. The city of Saint Johns is located in the next County (Saint John County) which is the narrow strip along the Bay of Fundy immediate to the right of Charlotte County.

You know the parents of Thomas were Angus and Janet?

If you look at the original in the split view you can see that all parties in this family were born in
New Brunswick.

There is only one record that I can see in the Acadian Records of a Thomas born to a Thomas and the timeframe is not correct nor the area.
On the 7th of July 1851 Thomas, age 11, born of the lawful marriage of Thomas McDonald and Alice Welch was baptized. Sponsors Mary Usher and Samuel Murphy. Woodstock RC Parish, New Brunswick.
Again the choices on the 1851 census for a Thomas with a son Thomas are limited. In West Isles, Charlote county you have 86 year old Thomas McDonald, fisherman married to 45 year old Elizabeth with 7 young children. Thomas has just been born.
In Springfield, King County there is Thomas Mcdonald, 65, painter visiting at the home of Abraham Gray.
In Chatham, Northumberland County there is Thos McDonald, 64, farmer with Ellen (55) and children Ellen(24), Margaret(23), John(19), Timothy(16) and Thomas(14). In 1861 the family is still in the same area and Thomas(23) is still with his parents.
Do you know any of the siblings of your Thomas? Finding out his father's name has eliminated possibilities but certainly it would be helpful to have more information.

Thank you so much for this, will try to get more information.
Wonder if this would have more details?

Just so you know, St Johns is in Newfoundland. The place in New Brunswick is called, and spelled, Saint John :)

The earliest members of the Scotch Ridge United Church came from Eddrachillis or Assynt in 1803. Included in this group of 25 families was the family of John Matheson (b 1763 Eddrachillis) and his wife, Elizabeth born either in Assynt or Eddrachillis. Their daughter, Janet married the Angus McDonald listed in the 1851 census of St. James Parish.
Looking through all of the census records for NB, the Thomas listed in the family of Angus and Janet is the only one that fits the time frame you've asked about. The only baptismal date, I've found for their children was for a Donald McDonald b. 6 Mar 1840 and chr 20 May 1840. They well could have joined another church but were, in fact, buried at Scotch Ridge.
Do you have any other information on your Thomas?
Best wishes,
Inez Reed
Have a dig through this document and see if you can find any matches...

Thomas (the one listed in the 1851 Census, St. James) according to the Kirk McColl Records appears to have been born/chr 1 Feb 1846. This is a neighboring parish.

Was your Thomas married in the UK or New Brunswick? What was the name of his bride, please.

Here's a resource that I've used from time to time:

If your Thomas McDonald was around in 1881, you may want to spend some time searching there.

Hi there,
Thomas married in the UK and settled here and raised a family.
Just hoped to find out more about him.
Thank you for the link,

Hi - I can't see him as being born in Newfoundland, for what it is worth. While there are surviving records from NFL, they aren't available on line.
My father's family were in St. James and St. Patrick Parish during that time period. Most of the people interred at Scotch Ridge Cemetery (early Scots) were from Sutherlandshire. You can have a look at those burials by searching for Scotch Ridge Cemetery NB.
Master Mariners stood for exams at St. John, NB but I've never found where those records are housed, if they survive. I did a search of the old newspaper articles that were catalogued by Daniel Johnson but failed to locate anything very helpful.
I've been pulling out the Sutherlandshire obits for another project and your query piqued my interest.
Happy Hunting!
