OK, my COX family were in Timaru from 1874 until about 1876. They arrived in Newcastle (NSW, Aust) sometime before 2 April 1877, since a birth is registered in Newcastle with the names Luke and Jane as parents.
I also know, from memoirs of my great grandfather, that this is the route taken from Staffs to Newcastle.
Any help appreciated, especially passenger lists that confirm the trip from NZ to Aus (as I understand it, via Brisbane).
Cheers

Hi John,
Passenger lists from NZ ports are not yet indexed, so a search isn't practical.
Your search might be more successful if you try looking at Australian shipping arrivals and also try National Archives Australia.

Thanks guys, I have Louisa's BC and the trip on the Carisbrooke Castle.
My main question is how did they get from Timaru to Newcastle (the birthplace of my father & his father). As I mentioned in the OP, there are dates bookending the trip - ie Louisa's birth in NZ and another in Newcastle. I've tried arrivals in Aus, no joy there! There aren't any online records of arrivals that I've been able to find.
Appreciate your searching.
Thanks, John.
