Could anyone please confirm whether John Fairbairn - married to Alison Ainslie 1792 - is the son of John Fairbairn and Elizabeth Carse? 2 Children Robert and William Fairbairn, sons of John Fairbairn were christened at Abbey St Bathans in 1787 and 1794.
Any further details (marriages, children) of either or both John's would be appreciated.

Hi Jonjor
I have found christenings for 2 daughters of John Fairbairn and Elizabeth Carse on familysearch.org:
Jennet Fairbairn: 02 SEP 1766 Swinton And Simprin, Berwick, Scotland
Agnes Fairbairn: 26 MAY 1760 Swinton And Simprin, Berwick, Scotland
From the same website I see that John and Elizabeth were married in Swinton/Simprin.
On Scotland's People put in John Fairbairn with parents John Fairbairn and Elizabeth C*s; Berwick; Swinton and there was one recorded in 1769. Hopefully this will be yours.

Morning Rae
As I still seem to be struggling to sort the John Fairbairns out wondered if
you would be good enough to see if you could sort the following details out for me. Understand if you can't and I'll do another post.
Should like any details about a John Fairbairn married to Elizabeth Yale
in c1775/1780
A Robert Fairbairn was christened at Abbey St. Bathans on May 22 Aug 1787 and William Fairbairn again christened At AbbeySt. Bathans 22 May 1794. Both enteries give father as John in Channabank.
Would appreciate any help to finding the name of their mother. Could it be Elizabeth Yale?
Think there are more children than these two children but I'm particularly interested in William
Any help you could offer would be much appreciated.

hi jonjor :)
don't know if you have seen this tree on rootsweb which might be of some help ?
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=reinheim&id=I203
the details would have to be checked but it might give you something to go on

Hi Ev
No haven't heard of the site you suggest but will certainly give it a try.
Thanks.

Morning Ev
You get all the brownie points this week!! What a find I've had through your suggested site. Never thought I'd manage to get back to 1714 and find so many more children in the family. It may also help trace two more that seem to have gone 'missing' in the late 1880's. Again, many thanks. It now means I'm no longer 'struggling' with this part of the family.

morning Jonjor :)
yes , that tree seems to have been fairly well researched , and while they
can be a great help it's important to keep in mind that they might not be 100%

Hi Joan,
We all get there in the end!
I've just been following back a William David FAIRBAIRN, Presbyterian Minister in Victoria, Australia, and ended up (via his father William and the father's first wife Eliza GORDON) with a William FAIRBAIRN from Berwick, then Manchester then Camberwell, married 1819 Christchurch, Newgate, London, to a Sarah LLOYD, born Bishops Castle, Shropshire.
Then others' research kicked in pointing me to William born 11 May 1794 bap. 22 May Abbey St Bathans.
My research so far indicates that it is highly likely this William is your William, father of the James William FAIRBAIRN who married Susan MINTON and had (at least) James Edward, William Louis and your Robert.
Am in correspondence with several of your relations.
My interest?
Not my family that I know of, yet. But as I'm administrator of the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA Project, I'm always trying to figure out assorted lineages, and find DNA candidates to take part (discounts available until the end of December hint hint ;))
So far, most of the FAIRBAIRNs on the Borders are looking to be connected to a greater or lesser extent.
Check out http://dnasurnames.info/lineages/spFAIRBAIRNLineages.htm
and if you have a FAIRBAIRN brother or nephew who may be willing to represent this line in the project, send them along to the project via any of the Join links
eg
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/order
As I "dig" on FARIBAIRNs I add people to my FAIRBAIRN Research tree on ancestry, with their source data.
It's a public tree, with your William (marr. LLOYD) at
http://trees.ancestry.com.au/tree/13096026/person/16128617
for those with ancestry access.
You will also find snippets about the family of John FAIRBAIRN Elizabeth YULE on the GenForum FAIRBAIRN board as a descendant with a great deal of info monitors that.
Admit that I'm not yet 100% convinced these Williams are one and the same, as I've not explored alternates, but the note that William son of John & Elizabeth "married an Englishwoman" is adding to the id.

Lorna

Hi Lorna
Many thanks for your recent info and your interest in the Fairbairns. All the names you mention seem to tie in with names on my tree. Unfortunately at the moment family matters are taking preference over searching for ancesters but will be in touch again
as soon as I can.
Again appreciate your info. Looks interesting. Just a quickie but take it you've not come across a William Louis Fairbairn married Caroline Melloy in 1884 and James Edward
Fairbairn (brother) married Mary Sharples also in 1884?
Regards

Hi Jonjor,
No, I admit I've also drawn a blank on them.
I'd noticed you were looking and had a quick check some time ago and failed.
Tried again just recently, to no further avail.
All the best,
Lorna

and have just had a eureka moment.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Victoria/Cheviot_Avenue/1221793/
shows William Louis and wife Caroline in 1901 over in Ireland (where Caroline was born).
Caroline may, or may not, be the Caroline of an age showing in the Belfast death indexes as dying in 1913, and ditto William Louis may, or may not, be the William Louis FAIRBAIRN marrying in 1914 Q1 also in Belfast.
Hope this helps, (the DNA project is still looking for a representative for the line of William, son of John & Elizabeth (YULE) FAIRBAIRN - with a bit of luck and a fair wind, might even match one of our latest recruits into the project too.
