Someone on another site posted this family - you should check it out.
1881 Census
Robert Goodman born Maidstone, Kent 1829 living in Paddington.
Let me know what you think!!
Regards, Olly
-
Quite a multi-cultural bunch! ;)
-
You've gotta be kiddin!! :o
-
Absolutly wonderful......LOL
Joe
-
Ive just had another look and noticed the ages of the husband and wife ;D......one very happy and contented lady there if you ask me ;D
Joe
-
Hmmm.... I get the definite impression that Mr Goodman didn't exactly take the census seriously! 8)

There is more about this family and some other 'fun finds' in 'Fun' finds in the census' and other records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,8399.0.html)

That is never correct................is it????? :o :o
Jan :)
-
:o :o
i think i'd have to agree with the Manchester Rambler, this guy Robert, not the Manchester Rambler by the way, was a windup merchant.
Great fun though
sharren :-*
-
That is never correct................is it ???
Jan, Im not saying YES and I'm not saying NO, but check out this member of the household :
John GORDON Servant U Male 31 Pakistan Footman
Pakistan ??? in 1881 ???
Sharren,
your reply came while I was still typing.
My guess is that Robert Goodman doesn't / didn't exist, this was a transcriber's joke !
-
Yes and the fact that he was 12 when his eldest son was born, and that son's occupation is Ponce?
Hmmm he had lots of fun filling that census in............any guesses as to why he had that many young single men living there?

I don't see any census ??? I see Robert and that's it. Am I supposed to hunt it down? I can't do that.
-
Tariana,
The 1881 census is free to search online at

Hilarious ;D ;D ;D
Robert being an International Playboy, must have picked up his household on his travels abroad.
Cecily, an ageing heiress was obviously won over by this smooth talking gigalo whilst holidaying in India.
The Ponce could have been Cecily's love child by an earlier liaison with an upper class woofta, and took the Goodman name cos his Dad was already married with umpteen children of his own and had disowned him.
I think it must have been April 1st when this census was submitted ;D ;D ;D
-
I have to be a right spoil sport but this enty isn't on Ancestry.
I reckon it might be a hacker leaving proof he has got into the database.
Just a guess.
-
and I thought I was the one being a spoil-sport !
John GORDON Servant U Male 31 Pakistan Footman
Pakistan ??? in 1881 ???
So it's either a Hacker, as Pam suggests
I reckon it might be a hacker leaving proof he has got into the database.
or some transcriber having a 'lighter' moment !!
-
hi Pam
Ifound it on Ancestry
Joe
-
Eh? What did you search on? I can't find it!!!
-
It's on Ancestry.co.uk & The LDS Family Search Site.
Search Criteria:
Forename - Robert
Surname - Goodman
Year of Birth - 1829
Country of Birth - England
County - Kent.
Can anyone confirm if the census image matches the trancriptions ?
-
I take it back - Joe pointed me at it and the image confirms - the same as Familysearch and Ancestry. AND it does say Pakistan!
Pam
;D
-
Hi SS,yes it does ,but it is very, very faint you have really got to look hard, although the word ponce is perfectly clear ,the word playboy is almost non-existant
Joe
-
Interestingly it is the last page of the enum district and the page before only has 4 names and looks like it finishes there.
None of the place info at the top is filled in AND it is in very different hand writting than the previous pages. There are no enumaration marks.
So it could be a joke by someone who filmed the pages or someone at the ONS. Maybe it is the people that did the filming? The names are ordinary names?
Pam
;D
-
Oh no...........you think they are fake......I was hoping to tie them into my tree somehow.............i could dine out on that one for a while!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
pretty funny if you ask me ;D ;D ;D - the writing on page 48 with the Goodman family is very different to that of the previous 47 pages, so wasn't done but the initial enumerator!
Good to know there is someone out there laughing in their grave about this
-> "The census hacker --- died laughing!!"
;D
-
Anyone notices it says "Lunatic" in the last column for him lol ;D
It's got to be fake. Very funny though.
-
I love the idea of the Butler being from Timbucktoo... as Melanie said... wouldn't it be wonderful to connect with that lot...
a wonderful fake... only question... does he turn up in the 1891 and 1901 ?
Mo
-
Hey Mo
Now it would be something if the old girl turned up in the 1891/01 8) ???
Joe
-
The entry is on Ancestry as well as the "original" image. The handwriting looks decidedly modern and very different from that on the previous pages. I think someone found a blank page at the end of this district and decided to liven up late a late night transcription session!
-
wouldn't it have been done years ago though if it's transcribed on Family search too? And not done by Ancestry transcribers. It could be done by someone who was filming the census pages in the archives. It may be quite a few years old. 10, 12 years etc?
I think the occupation could also be International Hawker. I can't see how the occupation after "international" can be read. The first letter of "playboy" could also be read as a H - it's almost impossible to read that word as it's so lightly written
I think it is definitely a fake though. I'd love to know who did it, someone who is living, or someone who has gone to their grave laughing about this like previously mentioned
:)
-
... check Robert GOODMAN born 1829 in the 1881 census.
The old ones are the best :D
-
But he's married :o :o ???
Surely that must hamper old Bob's lifestyle a bit ;D
Clara
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I wonder if the Enumerator knew what that was when he wrote it down!!!!
Kerry
-
Clara
His wife appears to be 97 years old!! He would need to be a playboy!!!
Kerry
-
Well he's not there in 1871 or 1891 - must have been on his travels :D
Gadget
-
Hehe!!
What about his son's profession - ponce!!! No wonder the word Lunatic was written down!!
-
Do you think the birth places of all the servants are correct or made up?
Perhaps he collected his servants on his travels!!
Kerry
-
Think someone's 'aving a larf 'ere ;D ;D ;D
Clara
-
I like the Tim-buc-too ones.
Have you seen the page after?
I think the enumerator (or someone in his family) was having a bit of fun - maybe had had a few pints. Let's see what we can come up with, etc. :o
Gadget
-
Anyone feel like checking the birth records for Maidstone, Kent circa 1829 ;D
-
Seen the Australia (penal colony) one!
and this at the bottom:
-
He's 52, his son is 40 - he must have started young!
Sallysmum
-
It's totally different writing to the pages before, don't know whether that means anything!!
Kerry
-
with no districts etc listed on the top of the page.......
-
There are lots of reasons it is a fake - Pakistan didn't exist - see the older thread I've merged you with.
A case of graffitti on records me thinks.
-
It might be worth looking at the last completed page of other enumeration books - see if there are anymore howlers. Volunteers?
Alternatively check on GR to see if anyone's got them in their tree ;D ;D ;D ;D
Gadget
-
I read about this somewhere, yes it is fake! - something to do with there being a spare enumeration page and some plonker filling it in for a laugh.
If I can find the bit I read and the book I read it in I'll post the detail.
Suey
-
Oh how disappointing I was hoping they were a real family!!!! Ancestors of James Bond or someone!
Kerry
-
I read this thread a couple of days ago and found it funny but the address has been "bugging me" ever since.
Today the penny dropped............... wasn't this the address that Danger Mouse lived at?
A quick google has failed to confirm this but if I am correct DM was only conceived in 1984 so the "census entry" is likely to be post 1984!
-
Found this on one of the Danger Mouse websites:
"It should also be noted that DangerMouse lives in a trusty red pillar box just outside of the Baker Street home of Sherlock Holmes famous residence!"
:D :D
-
Ok I hold my hand up - obviously not DM BUT the address is still "bugging me"!! ??? ???
-
I know what you mean NR about the address bugging you.........I've been Googling for a while trying to find something, but so far haven't found anything.
-
I can hear in my head the address being said and am sure it is from a cartoon ??? ??? ???
-
I thought it was Paddington Bear but No......... >:(
Bananaman lived at 29 Acacia Road ;D
I've just looked at the image on Ancestry and it's obviously been filled in by a modern hand :) Over on the next page, it's just blank with a hand-drawn flower on it ;D
-
I found this whilst Googling to find out why the address is familiar. The last section on the page is about Mr Goodman. ??? :'(
http://www.berksfhs.org.uk/journal/Mar2001/mar2001The%20Bulletin.htm
Has anyone come across other puzzling entries?
Mrs Doc
-
Just a long shot from memory was the address the address of one of the Likely Lads as in the U.K. T.V. show when he got married. Rodney Bewes played the part?
This thread is hilarious! ;D
Pennine
-
I can't find anything about the address, although it's still very familiar, and annoying ;D ;D
-
Tis very funny...
Another thing that confirms it as being a fake, along with Pakistan...
Australia was only federated and given that name in 1901. Previous to this it was separate colonies.
-
I thought it was Paddington Bear but No......... >:(
Bananaman lived at 29 Acacia Road ;D
I've just looked at the image on Ancestry and it's obviously been filled in by a modern hand :) Over on the next page, it's just blank with a hand-drawn flower on it ;D
Ah Bananaman..............that could be it!
-
It's totally different writing to the pages before, don't know whether that means anything!!
Kerry
it also seems to have been the work of more than one hand, or a schizophrenic.
-
Seen the Australia (penal colony) one!
and this at the bottom:
Can anybody make out what this is?
-
sorry meant the image posted by Gadget re. total number of males and females. ???
-
just a thought, but wasnt the address the same as the one used by tony hancock ;D
-
Seen the Australia (penal colony) one!

I can't remember this one - I'll have to check it out ???
-
Ah, I see it was a year ago. Did I really say that? How time flies when you're having fun ::) ::) ::)
It's a nice little drawing I think ;D
Gadget
-
oops! sorry gadget hadn't noticed the date.
Joanne
-
just a thought, but wasnt the address the same as the one used by tony hancock ;D
Tony Hancock lived in Railway Cuttings, Cheam (I can't remember the number)
Acacia Gardens stirs the muddy soup that is my brain and comes up with the thought: Victorian or Edwardian children's story. Did the Railway Children or Mary Poppins live there?

Harry Worth lived in Acacia Avenue [Message Board page 5 in above link]

I came across a family in the 1881 census which I hope someone will follow up for me. RG11 0020 126 48. Head of household is Robert Goodman born c.1829 in Maidstone. I just had time to do a quick check of the 1871 and 1891 but couldn't find him (I was doing a bit of volunteering in the library and was supposed to be indexing the electoral register ;D. Someone had printed out this 1881 entry and pinned it on a board). I can't believe the occupations given :-[ Please let me know if you can find anything on them.

Our playboy friend has been mentioned a few times on Rootschat....It appears that it is a fake entry written on the final page of one of the enumerator's books ..... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

" Ponce " LMFAO! ;D
'Mind you; Bit dodgy that he had him at twelve years old?!
Do ye think that was a bit of a protest about the Census there? ;)
-
And look at the age of the wife! ;D
-
There have been threads about this entry before.
It's clearly a later addition by some mischievous person (possibly a transcriber). They didn't think through various aspects, e.g. that Pakistan (referred to as one of the birthplaces) didn't exist as a placename until 1947.
Apparently the name Pakistan was first dreamt up as an acronym by Cambridge students in 1933, if the following is correct:
