I wonder whether someone has access to Hagbourne Marriages? and could offer any help ;D. Thomas Woodley married Mary Harwood on 29 July 1761 at Hagbourne. I'm looking for any clues on the marriage (witnesses etc) that might possibly lead on to finding a baptism and some parents for Thomas who has 'appeared' in my tree, and I'm trying every avenue to source where he may have come from. Hagbourne maybe; but I am unable to find him. I have found lots of other 'Woodley' baptisms in Hagbourne, but can only find Thomas's son Thomas in 1762. ? I have details of their children and can go forward, however I would like to try and find Thomas's parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Captain2,
From the Hagbourne marriage PRs from the OFHS,
29-6-1761 Thomas Woodley, Lab. married Mary Harwood, spin
Wits; Jonathon KEATE, Jo HARWOOD by Banns Jo.Scoolt, Minister
This is only a quick look for you, but if you wish me to do more looking please
let me know.

Captain2,
Continuing on; Mary Harwood was baptised 22-9-1726 dau of John & Anne
Hagbourne - nothing more listed.
John Harwood married Anne Parsons 6-4-1725, Hagbourne - again nothing
more is listed.
There are lots of Harwoods listed in the baptismal records but I could not
find a John Harwood within a relevant time frame (i.e. a John born/bapt say
1680 - 1700)
Nor could I see the baptism of Anne Parsons.
Hope this helps

Hi Alan,
Very many thanks for your reply. The witness's are very interesting, assume Jo. Harwood is (John) Mary's father and the name Keate is one that crops up a few times in the Woodley line I am looking into, although they are mostly in Harwell; not knowing the area but looking on a map I see that it is relatively close to Hagbourne. I have a marriage for Katherine Woodley to John Keate in 1628 in Harwell, obviously a lot to do to connect the two events! Possibly my Thomas Woodley came from Harwell and not Hagbourne.. I think I have to find out a little more about Jonathan Keate to know how he might fit in.
I have a baptism for John Harwood which I believe is correct 26 March 1703 Hagbourne son of John and Jane (?) and a baptism for Anne Parsons, again which I believe may be correct 30 March 1701 South Moreton, Berks, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth (?)
I have not been able to verify either of these dates as yet, they were kindly given to me by another researcher.
Kind Regards Angie

Hi Angie,
I have found the baptismal entry of Ann Parsons, which is as you already have is (30-3-
1701) dau of Thomas & Elizabeth) Farmer born 25-3 in the South MoretonPRs.
No more info is listed.
Regarding Jonathon Keate - this is what I have found in the Harwell PRs ;
Katherine Woodley marr John Keate 30-11-1628
No more info is listed
As for baptisms, I've looked from 1590 - 1614 and found the following;
20-3-1591/2 John Keat son of John -------
there are two other baptisms which i don't think are relevant but included for info;
18-11-1610 John Keat son of George & Mary
28-11-1610 John Keat son of Stephen & Joan
There is a marriage on 4-6-14570 of John Keat to Alce Smalbone - no further details
listed.
Hope this helps.

Angie
did you know that there is an old house in West Hagbourne called Woodleys?
KN
-
Thank you very much Alan, that has been a great help. No, KN I did not know there was a house called Woodley's in East Hagbourne, thank you for that info. I have lots of info on Woodley's in Hagbourne and Harwell, I'm trying to link something to Thomas Woodley, all I know about him is his marriage in Hagbourne. Thanks so much for your time and effort, greatly appreciated. I will try again to find Thomas and his parents, I have a number of possibles, but nothing to link them all together.... Angie

There's also a Woodleys cottage in Brightwell cum Sotwell (It's for sale right now). Brightwell's only a couple of miles away across the fields.

Hi Angie,
Could this be the Thomas Woodley your after? ;
Baptised 14-9-1709 son of William & Joan - Abingdon St.Helens ex OFHS
If it is, then his parents were married at Abingdon St.Helens on
"16-4-1695 William Woodley to Joan Martin - Sutton"
Thomas was the 7th child born to them. There may be more but haven't looked after finding this Thomas.

Hi,
I found this in England & Wales Christening Records, 1530-1906 at Ancestry,
Thomas Woodly
Christening Date: 27 Apr 1740
Christening Place: Drayton, Berkshire
it's about 6 miles from Hagbourne but it doesn't give any parents :(

Thanks Alan and Daisy Petal. I think the 1709 is possibly to early, Thomas's first son born in 1762 after his marriage, it could be ofcourse as he could have married before.. I've been working around the 1730-40 mark so possibility with Drayton ( maybe completely wrong ofcourse!) I was ofcourse hoping that a 'Woodley' would have been one of their witnesses at Thomas's wedding - no such luck!

Angie
Have you seen the page or so of information about Thomas Woodley from West Hagbourne in the book "Windsor Hakebourne: the story of West Hagbourne"?
This Mr Woodley emigrated to New Zealand with his wife Martha in 1875. The piece includes an article about their journey retold by his daughter in law Mary.

Thanks KN, no I haven't see the article, I have looked at the web site which is very interesting reading thanks for letting me know about it. Angie
-
which website?
KN
-
Type in Windsor Hakebourne. It comes up with the village history and details of the book etc., published by the West Hagbourne Village History Group. The site gives a view on the village which is very interesting; or try West Hagbourne and you get the same web page. This is not the Thomas Woodley that I'm looking for, he was married to Mary and I can trace most of his descendants., what I'm struggling with is Thomas himself - nothing more than his marriage at the moment.

Hello Angie
Have just found the West Hagbourne website, which to my shame I had never looked at before - and I live there!
I have the book - just ask if you ever need anything looked up!

That title was a big mistake - having manned the Berks FHS stall at a number of fairs I notice that people interested in Windsor pick it up, and are disappointed. People interested in West Hagbourne don't even bother to pick it up unless someone points it out to them.
-
Don't let the title put anyone off - it's an excellent book!
Fantastic quality of production and content considering that it's put together by a team of volunteers from the local history group.

Yes, I agree the title is a bit misleading, :) my first thought was Windsor? that's miles away from where I'm looking... 'My' Woodley's are from around and about East/West Hagbourne so am interested in the area itself so found the site info very interesting. My 'first' Woodley in Hagbourne is Thomas Woodley who married Mary Harwood on 29 July 1761. If there is anything in the book KN that relates to any Woodley's around that time period I would be interested to find out about them, as I am still trying to locate the baptism of Thomas. Many thanks for all your help everyone. Angie

Hi,
I wonder if you can help me? I am trying to track back on my family and have got as far back as Francis Woodley and his wife, Selina Ann. They married in 1875 and lived in East Hagbourne, with Francis' Uncle, John Woodley and his wife, Sarah.
Francis had a brother, William, who was 3 years older and also lived with John and Sarah. They do not appear to have had children of their won. Quite what the arrangement here was, who knows??
Selina had 9 children, 8 of whom appear to have lived beyond childhood. The youngest, Frederick, was my Grandfather. However, we are not quite sure who the father was, it does not appear to have been Francis, he seems to have disappeared from the scene and there is some question mark over a younger chap called Joseph Butler who was living with the family.
It would be interesting to know whether your lines marry up and if indeed, you have got further back that I have so far.
Regards,
Peter Woodley

Hello Peter,
Welcome to Rootschat. ;D I do not have an 'obvious' connection with my tree from what you have told me so far, however, my ' Woodley's' are in both East and West Hagbourne at the same time as your Francis so I feel hopeful we may be able to find one!. I will PM you with my tree information and we can see where we go from there.
Kind regards
Angie

Dear Angie,

Hi any Woodley in Poplar London 1900+

Hello Timothy and Welcome to Rootschat :) There may well be Woodley's in Poplar, however they are not in my tree sorry. You may have more luck if you post a new topic on the London board with details of what you are looking for. I'm certain someone will be able to help.
Good luck with your research.

Angie
