Hello,
I am calling on your expertise again
Thomas Holman was bp. 06.12.1811 Kenwyn
according to the census (1851 & 1861) Agnes Nelder was born circa 1811 Totnes or Dartington Devon
in Q3 1846 they married in Plymouth (area) 9 444
in 1851 they are transcribed as Halman in Stoke Damarel Devon with 2 children James aged 8 and Thomas aged 4
ho107 1882 387 24
Thomas worked on the railroad and by 1861 they were
in Liskeard rg9 1530 9 12 without young James
then they vanish until 1883 when Agnes dies :
Deaths Sep 1883
HOLMAN Agnes aged 72 Bideford 5b 309
(this ties in with her y.o.b as 1811)
can anyone find them ? and Does James belong to Thomas or just Agnes?
many thanks
Toni

Hi Toni
Was Thomas dead by 1881? If so this might be Agnes:
1881 RG 11 piece 2244 Folio 131 page 37 Barnstable Devon
Agnes Holman abt 1811 born Alvington Devon Widow
patient in North Devon Infirmary Barnstable.
I see she died in Bideford which I think is about 10 miles from Barnstable.

Hi Jan i've no idea what happened to them after 1861 but thats not Agnes
sorry i should have said there is also a Agnes Holman b. circa 1808-1811 Alwington / Alvington married i think - from memory - to James she appears on the 1861 1871 & 1881 census that i have seen
added
in which case the death may be this Agnes and not my Agnes ???
-
I can't find a birth for a James Nelder anywhere near the time we want
There are James Holman s in Cornwall 1843 and 1844 Helston , Redruth and Falmouth so I think they look more likely so do you think Agnes was a second wife?
-
Hi Trees
that thought hadnt crossed my mind :-\
i can't spot themanywhere not even sailing off into the sunset and even if the parents died i can find no trace of the children and with Thomas working on the railway he could be anywhere, i didn't really want to purchase certificates as Thomas is not my direct line he being brother of my gt gt grandfather.
-
I know the feeling only too well it would cost a fortune if we bought every certificate to clear up the many mysteries.
H,
-
I think i am going to have to leave this one until i can afford certificates

I have not been into this site for quite awhile and have noticed your queries regarding Thomas Holman & Agnes Nelder.
My connection is through my mother. Her grandfather was Thomas Holman and I have the marriage certificate of Thomas married to Emily Alma Williams in 1878. Thomas's details are as follows - Bachelor aged 30 birthplace Liskeard, Cornwall. Occup - Miner. Parents - Thomas Holman (labourer) and Agnes Holman (maiden surname Nelder). Witnesses were John Hollow & John Birch.
By the time Thomas had died in 1922, his son Thomas was the informant and he new neither his grandfathers first name nor his grandmothers first or last names. Drat.
Next I have the marriage certificate of Thomas Holman to Agnes Nelder in 1846 both full age and listed as bachelor and spinster. This Thomas has his profession as Railroad Labourer and living at Millbry at the time of this marriage. His father is listed as James Holman - Miner.
Agnes signed with her mark and was listed as living at Gooseberry Lane at the time of the marriage and her father is listed as John Nelder - Mason. By the way the marriage was at the Parish Church in the Parish of St Andrew, Plymouth in the county of Devon. Witnesses to the marraige were William Henry Anderson & Mary Ann Anderson.
That is all I have but would be most interested if you have found out anything else on this line.

THOMAS HOLMAN
Christening: 06 DEC 1811 Kenwyn, Cornwall,

-
Toni* there is a Thomas Holman christened in kerwyn 26 Nov 1809 to James and Jenifer Family Search C052822 1801 - 1812
Are you absolutely certain he isn't yours it matches the marriage showing father as James.

Thomas 1765 - 1820 m. Mary Johns 1766-1836 26.01.1799 St Gulivas (Marys birth place)
Thomas was born Kenwyn
these are the parents i had for Thomas -
they had a son John in 1808 he is my direct line
-
the james and Jennifer pair also had baptised in Kenwyn
1. ABIGAL HOLMAN 06 FEB 1803
2. JAMES HOLMAN 22 MAR 1801
3. MARY HOLMAN 09 MAY 1808
4. JENEFER HOLMAN 14 APR 1799
5. JOHN HOLMAN 22 MAR 1795
6. BETSEY HOLMAN 24 MAR 1806
were any of these names significant to your John's family?
-
I am going to have to work on this
The names that are constantly repated are JOhn, Thomas and Elizabeth
i wil have to go back through and check what i have confirmed and what i have been told because the bit about Thomas being Johns brother i was told and then found the corresponsing christening - they also told me he married Agnes Nelder which if Julie has the certificate and his fatehr is James then that bit cant be true.
-
It looks like you have one Thomas and Julie has the other I bet they are cousins
H
-
Yes i suspect they are ;D
-
There is a Thomas marrying Truro District(includes Kenwyn) in Dec 1837 and one mar 1839 so there were several Thomas Holmans in the area
Ouch nothing is straight forward in this game is it :)
-
at the moment i am only buying certificates for my direct line - well that is the plan, ;)
-
My plan too stick to that rule its far to expensive to do other than main line even these I only get if they lead on some where else It would be interesting to see if the Thomas's are cousins but it isn't clear from Family Search
H
-
it is very expensive and i said i would buy one certificate a week - here we are 3 weeks in and i have brought none ::)
