Does any one out there possess any info on a Richard Smith b.1888 in Whitehaven. Son of Isaac and Isabella Smith of Pica,Cumbria.,? Richard lived at 54,Roper Street, Whitehaven in 1911 ,along with Isaac and Isabella Smith who are my ggrandparents. Richard was a hairdresser by trade and also worked in a funeral parlour ,which I think was in Whitehaven. Richard moved to Distington and continued his hairdressing business. I am trying to establish if he had a barbers shop in Whitehaven and if my grandfather James Comrie worked with him at any stage.

Given your alias (picamarra) can I take it you're local to Whitehaven?

Yes. very nice indeed. I was in fact in Whitehaven 6 weeks ago and spent a couple of hours in the Archive offices. All very helpful. We had a good stroll around, which bought back many happy memories. I bet there are not too many out there who can remember going to the swimming baths on a Saturday morning, It was a two hour session, 8am to 10am for sixpence ,( an old tanner) and then in the evening, the highlight of the social week, a bus ride to the Ritz cinema, Workington (entrance for 2 shilling.) and a bag of chips in Distington to finish off.!!! Oh those where the days!! Thanks again for all your time. Regards . picamarra.

My mam was born in Lowca, then lived in Whitehaven before moving away. We used to go up for holidays to see my Grandma and my dad used to take me round the docks - we used to spend hours at the bottom of Howgill brake watching the trucks come and go. Also watching them fill the ships with coal.
I remember the docks area in shades of black and grey - today, it's all in colour!
Then there was the Golden Sands!

Ah yes indeed the "Golden Sands", but not as black as the beach at Harrington!!! I spent many a happy hour swimming off Seascales and St Bees beaches, but have always managed to escape from glowing in the dark. I went to Workington Grammar fom 1960 to 1968. All the best. picamarra.

Many thanks indeed for the photos. I wonder if my great uncle was a tatooist at number 54, I doubt it!!!! On our recent visit o Whitehaven, we tried to locate 39,Chapel Street where my great grandfather lived in the 1901 census , It has unfortunately gone. the pub "the Puncheon ", remains intact though and no doubt my relation would often have had a pint or six in here after a hard day "downt pit." Talking of pubs, my cousin Geoff ran the " Queens Head "in St,Bees for many years and still lives in the village. Best wishes. picamarra.

Morning Lakeland. I was very interested to see your post . According to what records I hold, My great Uncle Richard( my fathers Uncle, who was always called "Uncle Dick ") lived at 39,Chaple Street ,Whitehaven, before moving to 51,Roper Street and was stilll there ,, as afar as I know .working as a barber in 1939. Dick had the following siblings:Isabella Smith (my Grandmother) b1882 -died1950 .Elizabeth Douglas Smithb? - William Lambert Smith b1883 and Joseph Smith b1885. His mother was Ellenor Douglas b.1850 and father Isaac Smith 1859-1918 --- Isaac was born in Arlecden and also resided in Asby.Isaacs father was Richard Smith 1826-1873 and mother Jane Lamomby 1828-1892 They had 14 children!!!His father was Thomas Smith 1804-1889.Mother was Isabella 1806-1884.His father was Thomas Smith who married Mary Singleton b.1783.They had 9 kids (no further details). I would love to know if Uncle Dick married and what is your connection with all this.I presume that Dick must have died in the 50s?? Did you stay in Roper street recently and how did you know the Smith family? We may well be related!!Hope to here from you. Best wishes. Picamara.

hello, I am one of the Smith family,my grandfather was William lambert. My father was Richard Smith,I am the eldest daughter.I have fond memories of visiting your Grandmother and family at Distington. Uncle Dick never married .He died around 1947. The picture shown previously was not the hairdresser,s shop,it was next door which was No 51 then. The first building (Mason,s) was a pub the Indian King. My father carried on the hairdressing shop.Regards Lakeland
