				Hi there,
I'm looking to get in touch with any descendants of James Poole Behenna born London, England in 1822, also known as James Behenna Poole. He was married to Ellen Moulton and was Head Master of Salisbury Public School from 1867 to 1878. He died in Port Adelaide and Ellen, his widow, died in 1903.

 Best wishes, Jimmijam

				Hi Cando,
Thanks for replying! I had his mother and father and yesterday I found him on a transcribed court case, he was a Policeman in London in 1842 and the record was on the Old Bailey on line which was really exciting. I had some info on his emigration and name change. As his father and brother were in the debtors court (London Gazette), I suspect that this was the reason for the name change. Its just amazing what you can find on line now!

I didn't know just when he emigrated so thanks for that. A relative of mine had pulled some information on descendants but I certainly had none of the other information about his children or such detailed information on his career. My research prior to this has been mainly in the UK and mainly in Scotland. I really appreciate your post.

Thanks again for this information. I hope that some descendant might read this and get in touch, that would be lovely.

 Best wishes, Jimmijam

Thank you for the interesting snippets about the family.  I did wonder about the reason for the name change.   I have found the London Gazette invaluable for my own family research.  I will type up what I can find on the descendants.  You never know someone may be searching for an ancestor and bring up this post/s.

				Hi Cando,

Wow, I am amazed at this work of yours, thanks ever so much!  And thats a great idea, I really hope someone googles these names!  I never thought about listing them for that reason.   Well here's my Behenna line, supplied by the late, great Walt Whyte:

Claude Behenna married 1872 to Jessie Jackson, his parents:
Richard Breay Behenna married 1842 to Amelia Harbrone, his and James's Parents:
Isaac Head Behenna married 1818 to Mary Breay, his parents:
Richard Behenna married 1785 to Elizabeth Head, his parents:
Richard Behenna married 1762 to Mary Collacut, his parents:
Richard Behenna married 1714 to Ann Venton, her parents:
Robert Venton married to Ann Holland

Mary Breay's parents were John Breay and Mary Poole, hence James's middle name/surname!

Richard Breay Behenna was advertising for shares in Bristol, Manchester, London and Dublin in 1853 for the The Cape of Good Hope and Natal Coal and General Mining Company.  I'll attach the advert I found for Friday 7th July 1854 . Whether he was a conman or a victim of circumstance, I don't know but I found a record the following year, 19th May 1855 where he appears before the Court as an insolvent debtor with 7 former addresses.  Richard was held for a time in Horsemonger Lane Gaol and was still listed as Bankrupt by 1863, but I really don't know how the legal system works on this.  He's with his family for the 1861 census, but is missing from the 1851 and 1871 census, though with a name that is easily misspelt, I could have missed it, or was he trying to hide. He died apparently in 1874 aged 55.

Curious that his brother emigrates during this time and changes his name, don't you think?

And sadly, I found a record for James and Richard's mother Mary Breay for 1881 aged 83, Chandelier Maker's Widow, Pauper inmate, Camberwell Workhouse, Havil Street, London, England.

Thank you once again Cando for all your hard work. Its just amazing to flesh out their pasts.
 Best wishes, Jimmijam

				Hi there,

 Here's the adverts,

You certainly have an interesting family.  Yes I agree about the timing of the name change for John.

I think the marriage registration spelling of Malton for Ellen Elizabeth may be the correct spelling.  Did you notice the name being used as a given name for a couple of the descendants?

I am also wondering about the qualifications required in 1852 to teach in South Australia.  Perhaps John had replied to an advertisement for teachers.  I have an ancestor who emigrated in 1852 to teach at Scots Church School in Melbourne.

Will have a search tomorrow to see what else I can find on this family.  I feel many of them may have left South Australia as their names do not appear in the bdm records post marriage.

 Cheers

				Hi Cando,

I'm working this branch back at the moment and it is the most eventful one I've found records for so far.  It is an interesting period for this family, as Isaac, the father, had a lamp shop in Jermyn Street, St. James's Palace, London.  However there was a fire in this street, reported on February 9th 1840 and his shop was damaged and stock uninsured. By 1842, Isaac was a debtor. I'm surmising that this event really scuppered the family.

Any other help that you could provide would be just great. I've just emailed a relative, another distant cousin descended from Claud Behenna. He's come across a record saying that a photo was held of James Poole. Based in the UK and this being my first foray into Australia, I'm wondering, if the last school where he was teaching would have a copy, as my cousin isn't sure where the original info came from...

I'm really delighted with this extra information that you've provided, as before this weekend, these ancestors were all just words!

 Best wishes, Jimmijam

				HI
I did do some googling and found your posts.  the name I was googling was Barreau.  I see you have some connection with the Barreaus in South Australia, via Hills and Everetts.

My family is connected directly to the Barreaus.  There has been a lot of work done on their family and another family connected, the Hamiltons.  You can contact me and I can refer you to others.  I know someone is connected to the Hills and I recognise the Everett name.

Many apologies for not replying, its only been a year! All I can say is that everyso often I go back over different branches of my family tree, and now its time for the Behenna's.

Thank you for replying. I see that but thought I would try. The late great Walt Whyte  referred to by Jimmijam ,was my uncle and I do remember him saying he had found ancestors in Australia and I’m sure visited. Hope to try to piece together that part of our family too
 Best wishes VaVa
