Title: Ellen Davis
Post by: Pilgrim62 on Saturday 01 August 09 19:37 BST (UK)
I am trying to find the family of Ellen (Elen or Eleanor) Davis (Davies). She was born in abt 1838 and her father was Matthew Davis (obtained from her marriage cert). She married in 1863 to George Kirkham and had a son in 1865, William Kirkham. In 1872 she dies, I giving birth to Eleanor Kirkham. I cannot find Ellen in the 1871 census, nor William. It seems that George is living as a border in Newport but no sign of the family. I have tried to find Ellen in earlier census but no info on her or her father Matthew.

Any hel pwould be fantastic.

Regards

Hi

How old is Ellen on the marriage cert

How old was George and what was his occupation

What was Matthew's occupation on the marriage cert

Is George shown as a widower or single

On the marriage cert Ellen was 26 and George was 38. George was a mariner and a widower, Ellen was a spinster. Both of their fathers were labourers (John and Matthew)

Moderator comment: topics merged to prevent duplication of effort.

I am trying this post again as I am getting nowhere with this search.

Ellen (Eleanor) Davis (Davies) born 1828, father Matthew
Married George Kirkham (born 1829, Lancaster) in Newport Mon 26 May 1863
Gave birth to William Kirkham in 1865
Died 13 Apr 1872 of pulminary TB, living at 22 Cross Street, Newport

I cannot find any information about Ellen on the census' prior to 1872. In 1871 a Bridget Lancaster was living there as she is listed as being arrested and sent to Usk goal. I cannot find William on the 1871 census. In 1881 William is living with relatives in Swansea.

Also in 1872 an Eleanor Jane Kirkham is born in the same quarter as Ellen dies and George remarries a Sarah James within months of Ellens death (Q3). I have found Ellens plot at St Woolos Cemetery but there is no headstone there.

Any help would be fantastic.

We're on the Monmouthshire board, so hopefully that one?

Mike  where did you post before?  We don't want to simply repeat searches that have been done before.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I do not know where Ellen was born, only that she lived in Newport Mon at the time of her marriage and death. On her death cert and the birth cert for William she is down as Eleanor Davies but on her marriage cert she is Ellen Davis (might be ies as the surname is not too clear). Her father, Matthew is listed as a labourer and they were married in Christ Church on 26th May.

Thanks

I can only clearly read one witness-

Thomas Jones

The other is Catherine Wail/Wait/Mait, really not too sure of her surname

Hi Cardiff

The copy of the 1863 certificate says Ellen Davis 26 Spinster at marriage.

I notice a mistake in my original post, she was born abt 1838 NOT 1828

Sorry

Don't get confused by Ancestry's claims. This is the coverage of Newport registration district

Is there an address given for Ellen on the marriage cert? I can see a possible for Ellen in Dock Street in 1861...

What about an address on Eleanor Jane's birth cert?

Hi Osprey,

On Ellen's marriage cert the only entry for the address is "Christ Church". I do not have the birth cert for Eleanor Jane yet.
