Hi
Can anybody help me locate Henry Shrubsole? According to family information he was born in 1860 in Canterbury Kent. He married an Emily ???? and by the 1891 census they had two children by the names of Emily and Molly. I am uncertain as to where and when they were married but I do know that Emily was married in 1905 in Wandsworth, London. Can anyone locate his birth, marriage or even on the census records for me?
Many thanks

Before we all get stuck into this, you might like to try 1881 census, plus freeBMD for his birth and marriage , all free to search, as then you will get the thrill yourself of finding things!
If you get stuck do ask though.
-
Hi
Have already looked at FreeBMD but no luck there. Not yet looked at the 1881 census but will do now.
Thanks

I am trying to find the 1891 census that you refer to, but am having trouble - have you got the ref?
-
Hi
No sorry I haven't. I know that Emily was born in 1885 and Molly in1890. I have been told by an Aunt that Molly was born in Wandsworth.

This may be the family in 1901
(remember family hearsay is rarely entirely accurate!)
RG13 453 63 9
65 Meyrick Rd Battersea
Henry 42 Wood Pavoir bn Canterbury
Emily wife 38 bn Ipswich
Emily dtr 20
Agnes 18
Henry 16
John 11
Albert 8
Jane 9mths all children bn Battersea
-
Here is that family in 1891
RG12 434 1728 1
50 Meyrick Rd Battersea
Henry 31 Wood Pavior bn Canterbury
Emily 22 wife bn Stowmarket
Emily 6 dtr
Agnes 4 dtr
Henry 3 son all children bn Battersea
(ages vary a bit!!)
-
How did you get on with 1881?
Looking at his occupation, I would say this is a possible for him:
RG 11 1047 56 8
Wadhurst, Sussex
Henry Shrubsole 20 lodger Wood Blocker bn Barham Kent
lodger in a household with lots of other lodgers
-
In order to help pinpopint the marriage, it might be worth getting a birth cert of a child to see mothers maiden name.
Here (I think) is Agnes's birth -
Jul/Aug/Sep 1886
Wandsworth 1d 661
Agnes Jane Shrubsole
(I wonder if Agnes was known as Molly?)
-
Hi Lizzi
Many thanks for the info. I did look at the 1881 census and fould the same Henry Shrubsole. Looking at his occupation I agree with you that it is the same person. The ages on the 1891 census conform with the date of birth of Emily ( 11/2/1885), so I think the age error was done in the 1901 census. What I don't understand is that my Aunt mentioned 4 sisters Emily 1885, Molly 1890, Queenie 1895 & Jubilee 1897. Could these ladies be the wives of the Henry, John and Albert?
BoBo
-
Who knows?
I cant find any births for Jubilee or Queenie Shrubs* for those years plus or minus 10 yrs either way!
-
Nor can I see any marriages for the boys to girls of these names.
It would be worth you trying to find the family in 1911, to see if these girls were actually younger sisters.
Can you ask your Aunt for any more? remember that recollections often get people and dates confused over the years.
I see you have an exact d ob for Emily - have you got her birth cert? What info does that show?
-
The 1911 has a JUBLEE Shrubsole born 1897,the whole family appear to be in Wandsworth, parents look like they might be Emily b 1866 and Henry b 1861.
You would need to pay per view to see the transcript or better still the census image.
I think they may have been nicknames as they do not appear on the marriage indexes.
Carol
-
Hi Carol! Long time no see.
Good find in 1911
I wonder where Jubilee was in 1901? (either as Jubilee or real name, no birth under Jubilee)
The family had no 4 yr old, just a gap between Albert 8 and Jane 9 mths.
I will go a-searching!
-
The nearest female birth I can see is Jessie Kate in 1898 in Epsom .....
There are numerous boys born around 1897 in WAndsworth reg distr, but not girls.
-
Here are the family in 1911.
I think dad's writing must have been quite difficult to read, the transcript of each child's name is quite funny! And why is daughter Emily down as a Shrubsole if she's widowed?
SHRUBSOLE, HENRY HEAD MARRIED 27 YEARS 50 BRICKLAYER BUILDING B CANTERBURY KENT
SHRUBSOLE, EMILY WIFE 45 (EVEYONE ELSE BORN BATTERSEA)
SHRUBSOLE, EMILY DAUGHTER WIDOW 26 LAUNDRY

-
So Jubilee is a SON not a daughter!
-
And.......there's an Alfred Edward J Shrubsole born Wandsworth in Sept 1897......could the J stand for Jubilee?
Carol
-
All the kids are on Free BMD registered in Wandsworth.
The dau down as Jinie is probably Jenny K P....b Sep 1900
Wonder what the K P stood for?
Carol
-
Kweenie?
;D
-
Kweenie?
;D
Haha...
Actually it's Kathleen- I found her marriage to a Cecil Williams and then her death in 1997 with the name Jenny Kathleen P Williams.
Looks like Queenie was probably a nickname.
I had a great aunt Dolly- her real name was Mary Elizabeth ::)
They only called her Dolly cos she was a tiny lady,doll-like.

Hi
many, many thanks for all your help. I now have a clearer picture of this side of the family tree and am awaiting some certificates to confirm findings. Just ot say that Henry Shrubsole (aka Harry) was married to Emily Smith in Wandsworth in 1884. They had 13 children - 3 died either at birth or before they were 5 years old. 5 got married including Emily (twice) Agnes, Jenny, Cecil and Frederick. All info thanks to FreeBMD! Now I seem to have got stuck on 4 siblings and I wonder if they died in WW1. They are Henry Arthur V Shrubsole, Ernest Benjamin K Shrubsole, John Spencer M Shrubsole and Alfred Edward J Shrubsole. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can find out? Also, on the 1911 census - thanks again for that- I have Charles aged 1 - I can't find his birth - can anyone help.
Finally, Emily is listed on the 1911 census as daughter and widowed. I know that this is true as she married again in Dec 1911 but what I do not understand is where her young daughter has gone to. May Vera Eileen Blatchly would have been 2/3 years old. Any ideas anyone? Why isn't she living with her Mum?

You can search on the commonwealth war grave site to find who died in either World War
http://www.cwgc.org/
Will let you do that yourself ;)
Carol
-
If you look on the Commonwealth War Graves site
www.cwgc.org
you will find that Henry A V dies in WW1
(ooh Carol, you are good, I couldnt resist a look myself!)
-
Hi both of you
Yes you are good Carol! Found Henry Arthur and he did die in WW1. So what happened to Ernest, John & Alfred? I would assume that Ernest followed his brother into the army but maybe John and Alfred were too young to join. Any ideas?
BoBo
-
To find their deaths you are going to have to trawl through the indexes year by year and quarter by quarter.
Free BMD have only indexed deaths up to the early 1920's and the boys obviously lived till after that date.
Have you married them off yet?
Not had any luck with Charles birth or where little May is in 1911....maybe she's off visiting her other grandparents.Perhaps she was known by one of her many names not always May ;D
Carol
-
Hi Carol
Looked right through FreeBMD and found the marriages of Agnes, Jenny (thanks to your help), Cecil and Frederick. Ernest Benjamin isn't on the 1891 census and should be as he was born in 1890. He may have died or could be that he wasn't actually the son of Henry and Emily. But there only seemed to be one Shrubsole family in Wandsworth and every one was registered, including their deaths even at birth. However you are right that FreeBMD does not have everything on it.
Thanks again for all your help. Have left a message on the Light Infantry website for further details regarding Henry and the possibility of Ernest.

Hi Casalguidi
Many thanks for all your information. You have put some more flesh to my bones so to speak. Yes I too have found that Ernest Benjamin Kent Shrubsole was not a child of Henry & Emily but really appreciated the confirmation.
I wonder if you could help me a little more. Agnes Jane Shrubsole married in September quarter 1909 in Wandsworth. I have as her possible husbands Frederick Alfred Moore or Jessie William Green. Any idea which one?
Thanks again

Hi again
And thanks again! Boy that was quick!!! Laurence Edmund Blatchly was Agnes brother-in-law. Unfortunately he died a couple of years later. Was Robert Charles Green still alive when they got married and do you think Amelia Green was the mother-in-law?
BoBo
-
Hi Bobo
Sorry I somewhow missed replying to this earlier, I would normally have noted if either of the fathers were shown as deceased. Of course Amelia may have been the mother in law but she could equally have been another relative or not related at all - I would assume that the census would help you to sort it out.

Hello
I am new to all of this, but am tracing my family tree. My great grandfather was John Spencer Martin Shrubsole and my great grandmother was Florence (Florrie) Matilda Shrubsole.
I am trying to find as much information as possible as my father recently died, but did not have a lot of information on his family as he was never allowed to know about his real dad and his mother cut him off from the Shrubsole family to stop him finding out!
If you can help any way in relation to the Shrubsole family of Battersea I would be really grateful.
Apologies if this is no longer of interest to yourself.
Many thanks
-
Hello
I have been tracing my family routes to Shrubsole in Wandsworth, originally Henry from Canterbury. John Spencer Shrubsole was my grandfather and I am now tracing the rest of the family... if anyone is still on this subject could you drop me a note as all help appreciated.
-
Hello Butlera
Many thanks for your message. My apologies for not replying sooner. Yes I do have your Great Grandfather John Spencer Martin Shrubsole on my tree and I can give you more information about the family.
If you could bear with me for a few days I would appreciate it.
Many thanks

Many thanks for your help with this really appreciate it.

Hi Bultera
so sorry for the delay. I had a member of the family in hospital over the Xmas and New Year hol and I really haven't had much time to spare.
So sorry to hear about your loss. We too started looking into our family tree after my husbands Dad died and left very little info regarding his family.
Regarding your great grandfather John Spencer Martin Shrubsole. He was born on 21st Dec 1895 in Wandsworth. he was one of 12 children of Henry Shrubsole b.23/2/1862 & Emily Smith. He married your great great grandmother Florrie M Thomas in 1920. I have no information after that point so if you do I would much appreciate it to.
Henry Shrubsole's father was also a Henry Shrubsole born in 1830 in Denton, Kent. He married Eliza Curtis in 1859 and they had 5 children of which their first born was Henry.
If you would like further info regarding the other siblings of John I will be more than happy to supply that too but I don't know at this point how much info you would like.
Hope this was of some help.

Hi all
Molly was my great great aunt
Her real name was Jenny Kathleen Pretoria (as in South
African place) Shrubsole, we know of her brother Tibia (nickname) we think, Jubb was her brother, Cecil was my mothers Grandfather.
Molly passed away in June 1997 just after my eldest daughter was born.

(ForBoBo and Butlera)
Am new to this site and am aware this is a very late response but: my grandparents were John Spencer Martin Shrubsole and Florrie Matilda Shrubsole. I too have lost contact with other parts of the family but can of course add a few missing details. My grandparents had two children: my father Spencer Victor Douglas Shrubsole and Vera Myrtle ( Shrubsole) who is presumably your (Butlera) grandmother. I would love to know more about your side of the family and share more information. Hope this reaches you both somehow!
