Title: Hull cemetery records - are they online anywhere - if not, where do we go?
Post by: Blushing Rose on Tuesday 25 August 09 17:11 BST (UK)
Looking for the burial records for my OH's granddad who doesn't appear to be on any death registers anywhere (The Oh is currently looking for the death cert he's sure he's got).
The OH's dad had told him, years ago, where he was buried in Hull so I was wondering if there's a place on-line to go and look for him?
Unfortunately we can't ask the OH's dad as he sadly passed away last year which what's started this journey off.

Thanks!

For some reason we'd never thought that they'd been available at the library.
Would that also tell us plot numbers and how to find it?

The burial records should give you a plot number and either the library or cemetery/crematoria office should be able to help you locate a plot as they hold cemetery plot maps

Thanks....we'll probably go and take a look tomorrow, if we can, and take things from there.
This is just to close a door, really...

Not sure where you're intending to visit but please be aware that a lot of the Hull records are not available at the moment because they are preparing for the move into the new History Centre which is due to open in Hull centre in the autumn.

I know Hull Archives is closed and - I think - a lot of the records which were kept at the Hull Cenral Library are also in transit.

It might be as well to ring first.

I shall ring first, although they do have a lot of BMD stuff in the reference library atm although I will check first rather than making a trip and discovering they're not there!
I have also got phones numbers from the above link, so I should be able to get some leads from those too :-)

Hi

You can see the records at the crematorium on Chanterlands Avenue. You need to book, when I went last year you could only go on a Tuesday. However, its well worth booking. I discovered lots of unknown relatives who had slipped between the census records.

The staff are very helpful, they helped me with my research and provided me with maps of where the burial plots are.

I wrote to the crematorium on Chanterlands Avenue a couple of years back, as I live too far away to visit, and didn't even get an acknowledgement.  Is it worth trying again?  Will they do a search for people like me who can't get to Hull?

Hi Lizzie

I'm not sure, you could try emailing them

public.protection@hullcc.gov.uk

At least they will be able to tell you one way or another. Good luck

Or you can ring them - 01482 614975
Bereavement Services, based at the crematorium (these are the people who helped me find when he'd died, and even where the plot is)

Thanks Marge and Blushing Rose for your help.  I have a feeling that the grave I'm looking for was in a graveyard destroyed by bombs during WW2, or otherwise is now under a dual carriageway.

Lizzie, do you know where it is? I might be able to at least find out if it's still there...

No, my g.grandparents died in 1926 and 1935 respectively.  They lived on Hessle Road at the time, and it was suggested to me that the cemetery that was nearest to Hessle Road no longer exists.

I'm only interested in case there was anything on the gravestone(s) if they had one, that might throw some light on my g.grandfather's background, but I doubt it.  I have his will and that had no clues at all.

Does their wedding certificate give you no information about his job or whatever? That might be an avenue to go down...
Also, as we have recently learned - being buried in the nearest cemetery doesn't always happen x

Right - I've just rung the number I gave you (above) and asked the following question.
"If someone died in 1935 and lived on Hessle Road, where would they have been buried?" and was given the answer...'either in Western Cemetery (Chanterlands Ave/Spring Bank) or the Northern Cemetery (Chanterlands Ave)'

So, your G Granddad could well be safe and sound in either of these two places.

Northern is where we found my OH's Granddad recently and we'd understood him to be elsewhere, so don;t give up yet!

That's the stumbling block, I can't find a marriage for him and g.gran.  I have the certificate for her first marriage and a birth certificate for the last child she had with her first husband dated March 1878 on which she puts that her husband is deceased.  I can't find a death certificate for him either, but he could have been lost at sea.  My gran, was born in 1884 and I've looked for a marriage cert from 1878 (although g.gran is on the 1881 census as a widow) until her death in 1926.  By the way on my gran's birth cert he is listed as a fisherman, as he is on the 1891 census.  By 1901 and 1911 he is listed as a tobacconist/confectioner, on his death cert he was listed as a Master Tobacconist - I don't know how anyone can become a Master Tobacconist, that seem's a bit of oneupmanship on behalf of his son I think.

Many thanks for ringing the Bereavement Service.  I'll contact them again now and ask if they can do a search for me.  I wonder if g.gran is buried using her married name, or my g.grandfather's surname which she adopted.
