Title: Courtenage Brighton Sussex
Post by: Sussexlass on Tuesday 25 August 09 16:41 BST (UK)
Hi I am trying to find any decendants of Emily Elizabeth Courtenage b1904 Brighton, Sussex. She married George Charles Searle in 1927 in Brighton and she died in 1982 in Brighton.
Her last known address was Heather Lodge, Heath Hill Avenue, Brighton.

I would like to find out if she had any children as cannot seem to trace any.

Her siblings were Lily Edith Courtenage who married William Riley, Frederick W Courtenage who married Ivy Hughes and Charles Thomas Courtenage who married Winifred Wakeford.
Her parents were Frederick Thomas Courtenage and Emily Farley.

Thank you.

Have you got the death cert? The informant could well be a son or daughter.

Have you looked for a will? That is likely to name offspring.

Sussexlass,

How did you conduct your search?  Was is using ancestry.co.uk?

Ancestry has a fully transcribed database of the GRO births index.  There is no birth of a child surnamed Searle with mother's maiden name Courtenage registered in England or Wales in the 30 or so years following the 1927 marriage.

Maybe Emily Elizabeth was childless.

Hi lizdb, thanks for replying, I did obtain the death cert but it gave her sister Lily as the informant, havent gone down the Will route but will now do that.

Hi Stovepipe, thanks for your reply. Yes I did use Ancestry and have checked approx 30 or so years around her marriage. It was a family story that she had a child but this seems likely to be just one of those odd rumours.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply.

Genes has a number of people researching your particular Courtenage family.
I have also found it in the indexes as Courtnage.

Hi My name is Brian and I believe I am a descendant of Emily Courtenage.  I recall I had a Great Aunt known as Aunt "Em" who was a sister of my Grandmother, Lilian Riley Nee Courtenage.

I wasn't aware that Great Aunt Emily married, but I maybe wrong and her husband may have passed away very young. She did not have any children.  She lived in Brighton all her life, I believe she lived near to Seven Dials area in Buckingham Place. I remember going there with my Mother a couple of times to visit her.  My Great Uncle Charlie moved and lived in East Grinstead with his wife Winifred.  He worked as a Bus Driver for Southdown Buses I recall .

My Grandmother, her sister Lilian, had four children,  Hilda, Ruby, Sheila and Alan.  Ruby Riley being my mother. Her husband, William Riley was a butcher and for many years had his own shop in Islingwood Road, Brighton and they lived in Coleman Street.

I hope this information helps you.  My E:Mail address is (*) if you want to contact me.
