Hi all,
As I am from the deep South, I am not familiar with the historic layout of Oughterside / Aspatria.
I have several ancestors who were born here, but where were they likely to have got married? Could anyone tell me the names of the local C of E Churches or parishes wrards etc of Aspatria please?
Any help gratefully recieved.
Kind regards
Jeff Jackson in Poole

Aspatria was a parish ... and Oughterside was one of several townships in that parish

What names are you looking for, Jeff? I've just spent a fortnight there on holiday and photographed the headstones in most of the surrounding churches - obviously, looking for 'my' names but you never know. I took pics of the churches too.
Best wishes,
Jackie

...Er... besides the Jackson of course. ;)

Hi Jackie,
Besides JACKSON, I am looking for RICHARDSON and NICHOLSON.
If you come across anything, that would be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Jeff in Poole.

Hi Jeff, I saw your post to the Westmorland group last night so I had a look for your names but no luck, I'm afraid.
Best wishes,

From Bulmer's 1901 History & Directory of Cumberland:
"The village of Oughterside is situated on the north side of the river Ellen, one and a half miles W.S.W. of Aspatria. The Board School at Oughterside, instituted in 1875, was much enlarged and improved in 1896, at a cost of £300. There is an average attendance of about 100 pupils."
In 1901 in the Oughterside and Allerby Township there was a J. Jackson on the Parish Council.
A John W Nicholson lived at Allerby House, Allerby
As regards the Churches:
According to the Directory under the Heading 'Hayton and Mealo' is the following:
"This ecclesiastical district was formed in 1868 by the dismemberment of the old parish of Aspatria. It includes the two townships of Hayton and Mealo, and Oughterside and Allerby, whose united area is about 3,924 acres, and population 889."
"The Church, dedicated to St. James, is in the village of Hayton. It was erected in 1867 at a cost of £2,000 and opened on the 5th of November of that year."
So it looks as if after Nov 1867 the church would be the one in Hayton, before that Aspatria. Unless of course they were non-conformists. There was a Congregational Chapel in Hayton built 1844, and a Primitive Methodist in Prospect and Westmore End (apparently hamlets in the Oughterside and Allerby 'township') erected in 1860.
