Title: Photo's of Northamptonshire Men/Women Both Wars Wanted Please
Post by: seahall on Tuesday 25 August 09 07:52 BST (UK)
HI All.

I wondered if anyone has photographs of their family members from
our County, Northamptonshire, that they would be willing to share.

I would not use them in the public domain unless with consent,
yet they would add to the information I already have from the
Northampton Independent and other places.

Any would be gratefuly received if anyone feels obliged to share.

Hi another roots chatter has re-directed me to you.  I have photos taken in India before/during WW2 of the Northants regt, unfortunately they have no place or date on them, it would be lovely if you could identify anything.  Of course you may use them, I could scan them & send.

I have a photo of the Freer family from Wellingborough with their son Henry in WW1 uniform with his parents and siblings, Henry was killed in Middle East March 1918  and was a member of the Army Cyclist Corps attached to 1st/5th KOSB.
I also have a silk memento of his regiment he sent to his mother from Egypt.

here are some family names on the back of the photo which I added after help from Seahall.
I have tried many ways to reunite these with any  Freer descendants without success, maybe you will have better luck if you would like them.
PM with address and I will forward to you if the postal service is up to it.

Regards James

I am truly moved by your offer of the Freer photograph.

I would endeavour to find any connection to the family.

Although I tried to assist here, I am sorry to see it could
not go to a relative at the moment.

Thanks
My Albert married Rose Warren, all her family are originally from Northampton, lots from Blisworth, although Rose was born in Leicester. Have quite a history of boatman from the area but don't know it well. If any thing can be found re my Herbert William Bryant that would be great, still looking for the military photo rather then the newspaper one I have!

Hi Willsy.

I have asked another member elsewhere if they can help.

Obviously it depends when he replies, with a Yes or No.  :)

Post by: willsy on Tuesday 15 September 09 20:47 BST (UK)
Thanks for that, fingers crossed

Just to add, have Albert's military records and also his brother George Frederick Ward. It looks like George's no was 3044 but he served 93 days and was sent home 6th June 1891, spent 42 days in hospital. On medical sheet in disease column says malfunction chest and remarks include, congenital chest-no treatment. Was admitted to hospital (still in Aldershot) 24th April 1891 and discharged 5th June 1891.
I can't find him 1901 and wondered whether he could have re enlisted ???
Albert joined the regiment at Northampton but George joined at Aldershot 6th March 1891, they were both born in Leicester.

Hi All

I will try to get around to answering later.  :)

James what can I say, I am speechless, not enough to not give
you my thanks though.

Your package arrived today and doing crafts myself and seeing the
silk done by Henry, all those years ago brought tears to my eyes.

It is beautiful and has still kept it's colour after all these years.

Do you have a soldier of your own that I could make you a special
card for in return for allowing me the articles which I will endeavour
to return to the family.

Thanking you in allowing to be the custodian of such precious items.

Sandy,
Thanks for your reply, I am pleased you received the package and I am sure you will treasure it, The colour has remained because it has been behind a picture frame for a lot of years, it is amazing to think that it's nearly 100 years old. I do hope you reunite it with a descendant of the Freer family.
I will pass on the info to my friend in France who originally found the photo and silk.

Oh what horrors those young men saw and what sacrifices they made and are still making today.

Kind Regards.
James
Now I can finally close the topic

RUSHDEN ECHO 5th February 1915

RUSHDEN VICTIM OF THE WAR
SERGT. MAJOR BRYANT
Shot by German sniper
AN INSTANTANTANEOUS DEATH

It is with deep regret that we have to record the news received from unofficial sources, of the death at the Front of yet another of Rushden’s soldier sons in the person of Sgt Major H W (Chick) Bryant, of the Northamptonshire Regiment.

The deceased soldier was formerly an employee of Messrs James Hyde Limited, and when he was called up at the beginning of the war his wife, with three children, went to reside with her mother at Colchester. In addition to these dependents, with whom much sympathy is felt, Sergt. Major Bryant leaves a mother, father, two sisters, and one brother in Canada, a sister and two brothers in Rushden, and another brother in Australia to mourn their loss.

The first intimation of the sad fatality was received by the deceased soldier’s sister. Mrs Bridgment of Glasbrook Road, Rushden on Jan 22nd, when she had a postcard from Pte. Magee of the same company in the following terms: “I am sorry to send the sad news that poor “Chick” met his death on Jan 16th. Knowing the family well, I thought it my duty to let you know”.

Information was at once sent to the widow and under date Jan 16th, she wrote to her sister-in-law, Mrs C Bryant of 86 Cromwell road, Rushden as follows: “The news leaves one broken-hearted. It was the first news I received about my poor husband when I got you letter on Saturday afternoon and I thought I should have gone mad. On Sunday morning I received a very nice letter from Sergt. Chapman, telling me of my husband’s death and how it happened. He said that my husband received a soldier’s burial, and that his death was instantaneous.

Oh, poor “Chick”, a good man to meet his death like this. It will drive me mad, I am sure for he was such a good husband to me, and a good father to his little ones, and I can’t realize it is true. I shall very likely come to Rushden a while, and then I can show you the letter I had. It appears that “Chick” and this Sergt. Chapman became true friends when they were called up. They went into battle side-by-side, and they decided that if anything happened to one of them, which ever one was left should write and let his wife know, and he said it was his greatest sorrow to write and tell me, for he said that he and “Chick” were the greatest of chums. I don’t know whatever I shall do without him – it has fairly broken me up, I can tell you. I wouldn’t have cared so much if I could have seen him, but it was his luck that he could not get leave. I must thank you very much for consoling me in this bereavement. I hope that I shall be able to come and see you soon, as it will ease my mind to know I have got some good friends, for he was a thorough good man.

Further particulars are given in a letter received on Jan 24th from the widow to Mrs Bridgment, sister of the deceased soldier, to the effect that he and his chum Sergt. Chapman were out on a sniping expedition when, owing to something attracting Bryant’s attention, he put his head above the level of the trench to reconnoitre and at once received a bullet through the brain, death being instantaneous.

The deceased soldier was, we understand, a member of the Rushden Windmill Club, and was otherwise well known and highly respected amongst shop-mates and townsmen, by whom his decease will be keenly felt.

Sorry, Sandy.

I've been posting as I run in and out of the room through tea and washing up.

I did stumble across the link before, though I think the page appear after my own little foray through Chick Bryant's records, etc. I'm sure Willsy will find the Rushden site useful, and I hope the picture(s) help. I'm afraid I don't have a "full-quality" one though.

I'm glad others have been so helpful with your quest.

P.S. I believe that Sgt. Hayward/Haywood would probably have been 6299 Sgt. Harry John Haywood (Also Hayward per MICs & CWGC) who would have embarked to France in the same group of men as Chick Bryant (12-9-1914) and was killed in action with 1st battalion at Aubers Ridge on 9th May 1915.

Never Steve.  :)

I have been trying to put the graves given to me by Glen

I can see overload coming on.  ;D

Time to think what to do next as if you don't catalogue
things, they re-main un-indexed and hard to use.

Those medal cards are hard to do.  :)

By the way I love marmite, certainly not myself though.  ;D

If I have offended you, please accept my apologies, as I

Hi Son.

The same height as our son Mark then.  :)

It is actually an 8mg image, yet the quality is very poor, yet the best I could do.

I have been making some thank you cards for everyone who is helping with my project.

I hate accepting things without being able to repay the kindness.

I have not written in them so they can be used for personal use for yourselves.

So if any of you want one whose address I haven't got, I can send it to
anywhere you like within reason.  :)

Hi Sandy

Here is the group photo I sent you.

My grandad, Frank JONES, was in the First Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment.   He is fourth from the left in the back row of this photo.   I'm not sure if the men are all in the same regiment as caps and badges are not all the same.   Maybe some kind Rootchatter can explain?

If anyone could suggest a date I should be extremely grateful.   I know my grandad was in Egypt at the outbreak of the war and it really doesn't look as if it was taken there.   Then he was just home for a few days before arriving in France on 12th August 1914.   So, my best guess is that it was taken in the week before he went to France, but really I've no idea.

Also, if I'm not asking too much, it would be really great to put names to faces!!

Many thanks,

Diana

This is an instructing cadre as Phil, has pointed out....And all PTIs, with the central staff, members of the Army Physical Training Staff (as it was renamed in 1918).

As for date...Autumn (?Oct/Nov) 1917

The collars have been tidied up and there is at least x1 wound stripe visible.. I can see no overseas chevrons though. Also as Instructors, they have the stiffeners back in their caps. There are also a number of 1915 ptn jackets.

What a lot of cap badges!! Cavalry and infantry...Ummmm....Somewhere like Etaples perhaps? Or more likely a trg course for instructors at Aldershot, home of the APTS (APTC in 1940...)

Glad to be of help, Willsy! Thanks for posting his Memorial photos, and thanks to Sandy for her photos, too.

Diana,

Do you know what Frank Jones' Regimental number was? It would be rather unusual for Frank to have arrived back from Egypt just before the war, as the 1st Battalion who went to France on the 12th/13th August 1914 were assembled from soldiers serving in England and a large number of Reservists who had served their "active" period of service and were back in civilian jobs but on Reserve duty.

The 2nd Battalion were out in Egypt at the outbreak of war, but did not reach England as a group until October 1914.

It's not impossible for him to have made it back to the UK if he shipped from Egypt just before the war, but I haven't seen an instance of it happening...

Steve.

P.S. From my database, I have two Frank Jones' with the 1st Northamptons.

8259 Cpl/Sgt Frank Jones - Enlisted in later part of 1906. To France 13-8-1914. Wounded as a Cpl. with 1st Battalion at Aubers Ridge on or around 9th May 1915. No discharge date on Medal Roll, therefore probably still in the Army in early 1920s.

7196 L/Cpl/Acting Sgt Frank Jones, enlisted in the latter part of 1903. To France, 13-8-1914. No details of wounding, etc. Transferred to Labour Corps, No. 704196 (very late number, possibly even post war).

P.P.S There are a couple of post-war "F Jones" pictures on the Northamptonshire Regiments Flickr site:

Hi Phil, Scrimnet, Steve & Sandy

Many thanks for all your helpful comments and insights regarding the photo and yes, my grandad was a gym instructor, so that fits with the photo nicely.

I have a red booklet called Regular Army Certificate of Service which is where I got my information from regarding dates and postings, although now that I look again it doesn't seem to say which battalion he was in.   I must have got that from my uncle.

According to the booklet, grandad enlisted on 20th November 1906 and his army number was 5875048, but that number 8259 does ring a bell.   Could he have had more than one number?   His posting in Egypt was from 18.1.14 to 4.8.14.   Then he was Home from 5.8.14 to 11.8.14 and in France from 12.8.14 to 15.5.15.   He continued in the army until 1928.   Maybe the dates are just administrative as I should imagine it would take a few days to get from Egypt back to England in those days even in the best of circumstances.

He was wounded twice during his time in France, once on the Aisne and the other time on the Marne according to my uncle, but we don't know which came first.   Might one of those places include Aubers Ridge?   He was shot in the same leg both times.   I imagine that the second time was just before he returned to Britain in August 1915.

While I was rooting round to see what else I have that might explain why number 8259 is familiar I found another couple of photos, which I will post separately.   I'm going to look at the Flickr site first!

Thank you all so much and any more info will be very gratefully received!

Diana

Hi everyone

I've just had a quick look at the Flickr site.   It's absolutely wonderful and I think I'll be spending quite a lot of time on it as it may help identify some of the people in my photos.

Here is the first of the photos I just found and I'm guessing it's of the Northamptonshire Regiment.   Frank JONES is on the far left of the third row back.

A date and some names would be great!

Regards,

Diana

And here is the second photo, where my grandad is with three friends and looking very dressed up.

On a slight aside, does anyone know if there is a Royal Garrison Artillery photo site?   My grandad's brothers David, Henry (Harry) and Tom were all in the RGA.   David was wounded 14 times but survived.   Harry was taken prisoner following the seige of Kut and died of starvation.   Tom was killed in action in Belgium.   I have no photos and if there are any out there it would be wonderful to see them.

Many thanks,

Diana

Hello Diana,

5875048 would have been his final number. I think 7 digit numbers were introduced in 1921.

Diana
Title: Re: Photo's of Northamptonshire Men/Women Both Wars Wanted Please

The old Regimental numbering was completely changed in 1920 to Army numbering with Regiments issued a range of numbers. The Northamptons were allocated 5875001 to 5931000, so Frank Jones' new Northamptonshire Regiment number would basically be "No. 48" within the new series.

No. 8259 fits in exactly with a November 1906 enlistment.

Aubers Ridge was up at the La Bassee battlefield area near Lille and Armentieres. (Nowhere near the MArne and the Aisne)

The overseas posting dates are (or should be) always from the date of leaving the shores of England to the date of arrival back in the UK and shouldn't include time "in transit". He would have left the 2nd battalion in Egypt (they had arrived there from Malta on 18-1-1914) a couple of weeks before in late July 1914. It was just a coincidence that he arrived just as the 1st Battalion needed him.

The normal length of "active" service was 7 years (e.g. November 1906 to November 1913 for Frank) extended to 8 years if a soldier was overseas whilst his normal active service period expired. Hence, he would have been arriving home for a few weeks or months in the UK - either with 1st battalion at Blackdown or at the Depot, and just happened to be available just at the point they needed him most! A very interesting set of movements, that I wasn't aware of before....

The battles of the Marne and the Aisne were both in September 1914, though the 2nd battalion was captured wholesale on the Aisne in May 1918…..

Was Frank actually from Northamptonshire? If so, I might be able to dig some more information out on him.

Steve.

Hi Steve

Thank you so much for that detailed reply.   What a mine of information you are!

Yes, Frank was from Northamptonshire.   He was born in Piddington as were most of his brothers and sisters.   The younger children were born in Shelley Street, Northampton.

Any other information you can dig up for me would be very welcome indeed.

Diana

I knew part of that picture looked familiar.....

Charles Ryder John Mowatt from Talavera Day (27th July - the Regimental Day - just ask Mister Scrimnet!) in Dublin in 1922.

He's even sitting in the same chair!

See: http://www.flickr.com/photos/northampton_museum/3005021084/

(Though the caption on the link suggests Lt Col Mowatt was with the 2nd Battalion after the war, it was the 1st Battalion that was in Ireland in 1922).

The other officers being

Captain Edmund Locock Hughes

http://www.flickr.com/photos/northampton_museum/3005021010/

and

Wilfred John Jervois

http://www.flickr.com/photos/northampton_museum/3004185767/

So your picture was taken on 27th July 1922. I don't know what time....  ::)

Hi Diana/Steve.

Lovely new photographs Diana.

I have just come through Hackleton and Piddington on the way
back from Milton Keynes earlier this evening.  :)

I stopped to take some pictures of the villages for Rootschatter
Marty in Australia.

The clock at Piddington says 6.40, I am suprised that I managed
to get the pictures clearly.

Thought I would put one of the War Memorial at the corner of
Piddington Road in Hackleton here.

Steve, thank you for those names and the date.   I knew my Grandad was in Ireland after the War so it's great to know the picture was taken then.   Having the exact date is the icing on the cake.   In my notes I've got that he was stationed at Phoenix Park, Dublin, in June 1922 - must have come from another photo.   I'll have to see if I can find it.   Also, my Uncle reckons Frank and my Grandma were in married quarters at Richmond Barracks in Templemore, Co. Tipperary.

Sandy, thank you for putting the photo of the War Memorial here.   I didn't see it on my only ever visit to Piddington and Hackleton earlier in the year.   I will have to go again next time I come up to Northampton.   Please say hello to Marty for me.   I haven't forgotten how helpful he was with the BODSWORTH family.   I will send you the photos in a minute.

Diana

Hi Diana.

I will send Marty a cd rom of the piccies as there are 94 piccies
and size is 197mb, therefore too large to send in e-mails if I can find
his address again.  :)

If you would like one just let me know.

I found a Wesleyvan Church at the end of the village in Piddington.
I wonder if any of your own family went to it.

Do you have any names on the war memorial that you know of
as I took all the names as well.

Thanks for saying you will send photo's, look forward to them.

Sandy

I think the make-up of the 1922 picture will be all Sergeants except the row with the officers on which will be:

Company Sgt Major -> Company Sgt Major -> Regimental Sgt Major -> Second-in-Command (Hughes) -> Commanding officer (Mowatt) -> Adjutant (Jervois) -> Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant -> Company Sgt Major ->Company Sgt Major

It may well be worth contacting Paul Robinson at the Regimental Museum to see if their copy of the photos from this occasion are captioned.

Don't forget that as a soldier serving after 1921, Frank Jones' records should still be held by the MOD.

Hi Steve

Thank you again for your invaluable information.   Being totally ignorant, is the Museum in Northampton?   It does sound as if getting in touch would be a good idea.

I've been working my way through the Flickr site, trying to identify men in photos of the cricket and hockey teams that I have.   It's a bit slow going, but very interesting.   Wilfred John JERVOIS is in them too.   On the Flickr site there is a photo purporting to be my grandfather that isn't him and another one captioned E JONES, which I'm sure is him.   I wonder how many other mistakes there might be?

I had wondered if I could get hold of my Grandad's records but I have no idea how to go about it.   Is it easy?

Many thanks,

Diana

I must admit that I thought the "E Jones" man looked like him!

I'll find the info for the Service Records a bit later. I believe it is straightforward as long as you are a direct relative.

Yes, the Museum is in Abington Park just out of town. The Museum archive staff tend to be at the Shoe Museum at Guildhall Road in town.

As other folk here also have Hackleton/Piddington ancestors the
names on the memorial may also be their's.

Diana I think the address for N.O.K. Military records post 1921 is

Army Personnel Centre, HQ Secretariat, Historic Disclosures,
Mail Point 400, Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow G2 8EX

Please correct me if I am wrong anyone.

I used to work at Northampton Women's Aid (Domestic Violence) at
13 Guildhall Road, so I know the Museum well as it was over the road.  :)

Must go and see that Son of mine now, he is bound to be in his element.  ;D

Here is a link to details, plus the Kinship Form that needs to be filled in, because as things stand presently we cannot ask for other peoples details for the post-WW1 era.

Hi Steve & Sandy

We used to go to Abington Park to play as children and I remember going to the Museum there.   It always seemed rather dry and uninteresting - what a missed opportunity!   It will be on my list of places to visit next time I'm in Northampton and so will the Museum in the Guildhall.

The photos of the War Memorial are a great help.   I don't think Samuel JONES is part of "my" family, but I'm sure that Charles GARNER, Reginald LIDDINGTON, Harry PEARSON, Frank PEARSON, Herbert WESTBURY & Harry WESTBURY would all have been cousins of my Grandfather in some degree.

Thank you so much for your help.   I'll get the letter off to Glasgow a bit later on.

Best wishes to you all,

Diana

I don't think anyone has pointed it out yet but the Northampton Roll of Honour of men from the town serving in 1916 shows Frank Jones with the 2nd Battalion. It wasn't unusual for a man to return to the Front with a different battalion after recovering from wounds. Hopefully his service records will lay out his movements, but if not then a switch of battalions in 1915/16 has to be considered.

Frank JONES 82 SHELLEY STREET 2ND NORTHAMPTONSHIRE SERGEANT
Henry JONES 82 SHELLEY STREET ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY SERGEANT

http://www.northants-familytree.net/soldier%20index%20roll%20of%20honour.htm

...and then the 1918 Absent Voters List shows him as a Sergeant with the 1st Battalion...

Hi Steve

The printer is working again and now I just need to order a death certificate and get permission from my uncle, who is the next of kin.

Thank you for the link to the 1916 Northampton Roll of Honour.   I knew about the northants-familytree site, but hadn't come across the Roll of Honour on it before.   I can see some of my grandfather's HAKES cousins, so will have to study it some more.

My grandfather didn't return to the fighting after he came home to Northampton to recover from his second wound in the leg.   Maybe he changed Battalions after he trained to be an Army Gym Instructor.

Many thanks for all your hard work on my behalf.

Best wishes,

Diana

Just an additional thought...

During the pre-war period, the 1st and 2nd Battalion of most Regiments followed a policy of one battalion being based in the UK (and Ireland) and one out in the Empire. Up to January 1911 the 1st Battalion was serving out in India, whilst the 2nd Battalion was based in England.

Bearing in mind that Frank Jones returned to the UK in August 1914 (and we know he was fit and healthy at that point - i.e. not being evacuated sick - because he went straight to France), he is very likely to have been completing his overseas stint with the Regiment which in most cases was 5 years+.

Hence, he almost certainly saw overseas service with both the 1st Battalion (in India and Aden) and the 2nd Battalion (at Malta and Egypt).

The "switch" was performed by H.T. "Dongola" which left the UK with the men of 2nd Battalion on board on the 18th January 1911. On 25th January 1911 it reached Malta and dropped off its 2nd Battalion passengers. It then steamed on through the Suez Canal to Aden in the Yemen to pick up the 1st Battalion. The Dongola left Aden with 1st Battalion aboard on 21st February 1911 and headed back through the Suez Canal back to Malta arriving on 7th March 1911 where it dropped off a number of 1st Battalion men who had still got overseas time left to serve before heading back to the UK with the remainder of 1st Battalion arriving at Devonport on 15th March 1911.

I strongly suspect that Frank Jones was part of the group of men dropped off at Malta on 7th March 1911 when the 1st Battalion returned from India.

Hi Steve

Once again a big thank you for your amazing knowledge.

Looking at my grandfather's Certificate of Service Booklet his time in Malta started on 7th March 1911 and before that he was in India from 6th November 1907 to 6th March 1911.   I didn't know that Aden was included in India, but he was definitely in Aden, so that fits with your information.

It seems as if any time spent in transit counts as part of the previous posting.   I suppose it has to be accounted for somehow.

Phew! Guessed correctly....  ;)

The 1st Battalion were based at Jullundur (and had been since 1903) with various detachments in other places in northern India when Frank Jones arrived with them. Thereafter they moved to Poona (arrived 3rd March 1908). For a short while from July 1908 to August 1908 they moved to Colaba on the Bombay Peninsula to assist in policing the possible unrest that was expected at the trial of Bal Gangadhar Tilak (a "forerunner" of Gandhi).

The battlion moved on to Aden (Yemen) in late January 1910 arriving at Aden on 2nd February 1901. Of the 8 Companies (the structure changed to 4 companies in 1914), 3 Companies were stationed at "The Crater",  with 2 Companies at Steamer Point, and the remaining remaining three Companies (A, B & D Companies) back on mainland India at Ahmednagar.

Incidentally, those men who were awake got a good view of Halley's Comet passing overhead at Aden during April 1910....

All I know is on the 1901 census Alfred and his 3 children are listed at 65 Junction Rd. Kingsthorpe
I know his wife Alice [nee Nightingale] died when my Grandmother was born 1898.
But they moved to 50 Portland St. and thats where Alfred died. This side of the family is giving me trouble since there isn't anyone I know of left in England. But, surprises are quite welcomed!

Hi Susan.

I can see Alice's death in Freebmd at Reading Reg District in Dec Qtr
1899 aged 28.

As you know Alice's maiden name I take it you have the marriage
in the Brixworth Reg District Sep 1891
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/brixworth.html

I can see Alfred died 16th September 1930 aged 61 and was
buried at Billing Road Cemetery. No gravestone remains.

Then we got caught in the traffic at on the A5, so just got home
awhile ago.

Your continuing help and pictures are greatly appreciated.

Take Care.  Sandy

Hi All.

I would like to add my Grateful Thanks to Rosalind for the information
from the Wilbarston Roll of Honour List from the Church where she
takes the Remembrance Service every year.

Also to the ladies who were preparing the Church for the Candle and Crib
Festival for this week-end who offered me a warm drink.

I hope that your services are well attended.  :)

It was extremely cold and windy yesterday when I visited and like Brampton Ash
the Church is on the Hill so the winds gust across the Churchyard.

I think that is all I will be doing this year, as the colder weather makes
it quite a job.

Please continue with sharing any photographs, information etc.

Hello Sandy, I've just been reading this fascinating thread, and thought you might find this link interesting. You may know it already, of course. http://www.raundswarmemorials.org/117.html

Here is a link to the tragic story of a Northampton WW2 casualty.  This man's wife was a lovely lady whom I met towards the end of her life. I don't think she ever recovered from losing him, especially knowing how he died. Fellow Rootschatters found him for me.

Hi Sandy,

I have a couple of WWII fellows for you.

First my uncle Jack (Jack Harold Berrill) born Wellingborough 22/12/1910 and saw service with the Royal Marines in South Africa and Italy (at least) but ended up being invalided out with TB after being shipped from tropical climes to Scotland in winter but still with tropical kit!

Second up is cousin Charlie (Charles Edward William Frost) born Daventry Q4/1920 and served as Trooper #7893070 with the 46th (The Liverpool Welsh) Battalion, Royal Tank Regiment, R.A.C. Killed during fighting on the Campoleone Salient at Anzio during Operation Shingle on 04/02/1944 and buried in Grave XX.J.4 at the Beach Head War Cemetery, Anzio, Italy. (Picture taken at Cairo when part of Monty's Desert Rats).

Hope they are of interest/use to you.

Paul

Hi Sandy

It's PhilA (Phil Andrews of Wootton) here, you directed me to this site yesterday. You've been helping me with the project to record the history of 130 men on the Daventry Great war memorial (In particular the search for W Wadsworth of the Kings Rifle Brigade).
The main researcher chap of each soldier's history is Gerry Thompson (who I've yet to meet) but I notice on the website he has states he has photos on many of the men, so when he has time I'm sure he'll be pleased to let you have copies - and you may have some for him?. I'm tracking down the names that he can't find and as a by-product connecting them by family too!
I've just looked though all 13 pages here and I can't see a singe mention of Daventry men at all!!
I have a few pictures of my family from WWI on my ancestry site which you can glady have. In what format is best for you? Do you want to copy them off there if I give you their names? Or what?
Although I read your initial post I'm uncertain what your project is! Is this the end product where people can just view? or is there another site in some sequence of which war and regiment etc? Are you collating for a book? Or it is just completely random submission on here?
Do you want pictures of serving soldiers in later wars? - if so I'll let you take a photo of me!

Regards
Phil

HI Phil.

Thanks for your replying to message left on your Daventry Roll of Honour Topic.

You must be exhausted after reading all the pages.  :)

At the moment I am collating as much information I can about Northamptonshire Men
such as CWGC graves (also non war graves mentioning the Soldier on the family
headstone) in the Northants Cemeteries and headstone from abroad if available, the
mens personal records, photographs, etc, etc.

I am in-debted to folk who have kindly donated photographs of their relatives
here and elsewhere who also served but were not killed.

I will P.M. you about your kind offer which is greatly appreciated.

I have been to Daventry and taken photographs of the War Memorial
(nearly fell down the slope) and all possible graves I could find in the
Churchyard.

I do appreciate the photograph though, as I am sure others will.

Will be in touch, thanks again.

in it also.  :)

I would also like to thank the folk on Alan's site that have allowed me to
use their information, I greatly appreciate it as it adds to the
stories of these courageous men.

Although the information is in the public domain asking to using it
means that I have in some cases gleaned more, and I feel it was
only polite to ask.

If any of you would like a remembrance card just ask.

I am deeply touched by all the folk who are being so kind in their
assistance with my project.

Sandy - My Grandad. I will get photos from Daventry WW1 memorial project.
Stevbie - Some of 112 men on Daventry WW1 Memorial were Northamptonshire Regt - names to follow. Many are my relations hence I've been asked to help them. http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Northamptonshire/Daventry.html

Please Anyone who can add anything on my G/Dad I'd be very grateful for.

Stanley Walter MARRIOTT my maternal G/dad b 1894 Northampton 18 Oakley St, C1911 at 77 Cecil Rd

Enlisted in Army Pay Corps (most of cousins in Daventry went into infantry or artillery).
Picture far R at back as Cpl in RAPC.  Regt No: 103620 and seems kept same Regt no as it's on his medal rim?
17/11/16 - APC Event  (I have the original Dining Out menu signed by all the 60 men): "On occasion of NCOs and men transferring to combatent units". Stan went into Machine Gun Corps (But their archivist unable to help identify his unit, war diary or service) - but G/dad kept this move secret from family (Maybe - he saw no need to alarm them considering 20 deaths of relatives in DAVENTRY?). Only found out he was in MGC two years ago when doing my family tree (during my rehabilitation) and found old docs.

1919 - Certifcate from Maj-Gen Kellett for MGC service to CQMS SW MARRIOTT. Very responsible role.
Got Arabic bank notes (confirms he served in 'Mespot'.)
Got Cyrillic ticket stubs (noted that MGC served in NW Russia) - where??
1919 Demobbed lived Norman Rd, Abington. 4 daughters. Worked at Crockett & Jones. A gentleman.
Sep 74 aged 79 was best man for his brother in law who re-married at age 94!!

I'll spread word for your request.

I will pick up the magazine and view the article with interest. This is my own biography on Frederick Charles Cockerill:

Lieutenant Frederick Charles Cockerill

Frederick Charles Cockerill was born in 1882 in Northampton. Frederick was the son of Thomas Cockerill (1849-1889) and Mrs. Matilda Jane Cockerill (1851-1933, nee Faulkner), of 74 Swan Street, Northampton. Frederick had one brother and one sister - Thomas Ernest Cockerill (born in 1873) and Ethel Jane Cockerill (born in 1877).

Educated at Northampton School, Frederick Cockerill played cricket for Northamptonshire prior to the war. Moving to London, Frederick became a music hall manager, a position that enabled him to meet his future wife – Lilian George, who was better known as Queenie Leighton, a music hall star during the 1900s and 1910s.

Queenie Leighton was born on 18th July 1872 as Lilian George in Auroraville, Wisconsin and came to England at a young age. She first appeared on stage at the age of eight in Oxford, and began her stage career proper as Lilian Leighton when she appeared at Northampton in 1889. In the 1900s and 1910s she became a music hall start – appearing in a long run of shows at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. She also appeared at the Gaiety Theatre, the Coliseum and the Tivoli. She was well known as a principal boy in pantomime.

When Frederick Cockerill joined the Army in November 1914 it was as a Private in the 28th Battalion of the London Regiment (Artist’s Rifles). Allocated No. 2879, Private Cockerill embarked to France on 14th February 1915. There he joined the establishment of the 1/28th Battalion who were operating as Officers Training Corps based at Bailleul. In April 1915 the Artists’ Rifles moved to St Omer. Like many of the men with the Artist’s Rifles, Frederick Cockerill received his officer training over the five and a half months he spent with them in France and was discharged to a Commission on 29th July 1915.

Despite being discharged to his commission in July 1915, Frederick Cockerill was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 24th October 1915. At that time he was on leave in the UK, during which time he married Lilian George / Queenie Leighton at Fulham Registry Office on 27th October 1915. The next day, 28th October 1915, Second Lieutenant Cockerill returned to France and was posted to 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment on arrival. The battalion spent the time that Frederick Cockerill was with them in the Loos sector through the rest of 1915 and the first half of 1916. Many of the officers moved companies within the battalion on a fairly regular basis, of which there is little record, but Second Lieutenant Cockerill was part of  “A” Company as of April 1916, and by the beginning of July 1916 had moved to “D” Company.

On 20th July 1916, the battalion took part in an operation in the “Switch Line” trench system near Pozieres, where the battalion bombed it’s way along the trench system that was partly held by the British and partly by the Germans. Second Lieutenant Cockerill was heavily involved in the attacks with grenades on the German barricades, both in personally bombing the German barricades and in leading his men in the same. The Germans fought back with grenades of their own, one exploding near Frederick Cockerill and wounding him with numerous small fragments. Though Second Lieutenant Cockerill walked away from the battle with his wounds, he was evacuated back to England.

Title: Re: Photo's of Northamptonshire Men/Women Both Wars Wanted Please
Post by: Stebie9173 on Saturday 25 June 11 19:02 BST (UK)
Recovery from his wounds took Frederick Cockerill about six months, and he returned to the 1st Battalion in April 1917. Second Lieutenant Cockerill was promoted to Temporary Lieutenant on 1st July 1917.

On 10th July 1917, the 1st Battalion was decimated in the Battle of the Dunes where it lost all the men and officers (apart from nine men) that were stationed in the dunes at Nieuport when the Germans launched their attack. Fortunately for Lieutenant Cockerill he was not on duty in the dunes on that fateful day for the battalion, instead being one of the ten battalion officers either behind the lines or on leave.

From the end of August 1917 until the end of September the battalion and the rest of the 1st Division were sequestered under “quarantine” whilst training for Operation Hush, an amphibious assault on the Belgian coast, however a lack of progress in the Ypres offensives on which the operation was largely reliant meant the plan was postponed and eventually cancelled. After coming out of quarantine, the battalion headed off to the Ypres salient but arrived once the offensive had faltered.

Replacing worn out units in the line, the 1st Battalion spent the rest of 1917 and the first three months of 1918 in the Ypres Salient, where they were when the German offensive was launched further south. The battalion’s action on the 21st March 1918 – when the rest of the British Army was on the retreat – consisted of a raid on the German trenches to discover whether the Germans planned an attack in that sector. That part of the Western Front was quiet however, and the 48th was soon moved south to bolster the defences at Givenchy.

Going into the line at Givenchy in April 1918, the 1st Northamptons were called on to help recapture high ground north of Givenchy on the 19th April 1918. Lieutenant Cockerill was part of “A” Company during that attack and was wounded during the recapture of the lost trenches. His evacuation from Givenchy ended his overseas involvement in the Great War.

On recovery – at least partially – from his wounds, Frederick Cockerill was attached to the Machine Gun Corps and appointed as an acting Captain whilst employed as an Assistant Instructor in the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) from 11th November 1918 to 16th December 1918 / 12th January 1919.

The Northampton Roll of Honour from 1916 (from Northants Family Tree site) shows:

Charles William MARRIOTT, 77 CECIL ROAD, 7TH NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, SERGEANT
Stanley Walter MARRIOTT, 77 CECIL ROAD, ARMY PAY CORPS, CORPORAL

http://www.northants-familytree.net/soldier%20index%20roll%20of%20honour.htm

The 1918 AVL shows:

Marriott, Charles William, 77 Cecil Road, Cadet, Officer Training Corps, Pirbright.

There is no entry for Stanley Walter Marriott at that address.

It is sometimes possible to garner some information from the records of men with nearby numbers. That of Percy Thomas Wooldridge, who also served in the APC and then the MGC may be helpful in giving us some possible dates of transfer:

Percy Thomas Wooldridge

Enlisted on 20-11-1914
A railway clerk
Posted to Army Pay Corps, No. 3733
Transferred to 96th Training Reserve Battalion, No. TR/7/17600 on 24-3-1917
Transferred to Machine Gun Corps, No. 103625 on 10-5-1917
To France on 10-8-1917
Posted to 54th Company M.G.C. (54th Brigade, 18th Division)
To Base Depot, 1-11-1917
Transferred back to Army Pay Corps, No. 3733 (as previously), on 29-12-1917
Class Z Reserve on 8-4-1919

We cannot however rely on the unit that Pte. Wooldridge was posted to being the same as that to which Stanley Marriott was posted.

I think that "Major General Kellett" is Major-General Richard Orlando Kellett, C.B., C.M.G. (14.1.1864 - 12.11.1931) who commanded 99th Infantry Brigade from 1916 to 1918 and then one of the Machine Gun Corps Training Centres from 1918 to 1919. Presumably the certificate is from his later duties so gives us no clues as to his whereabouts whilst overseas.

- Discharged to Commission, 28-5-1918.
- Served with Royal Berkshire Regiment
- Attached to "3rd Battalion of Monmouthshire Regiment" per WO338 Index
- Relinquished commission on 1-9-1921.

Thanks Stevbie9173 and Seahall. Charles (b in Dav) and Stanley MARRIOTT (b in N'pton) were brothers, family moved to town 1891-94.

With thanks to Northampton independant I have transcribed the wedding article:

The marriage took place at Holy Trinity Church on Saturday of Sergt (Sgt) C. W. Marriott of the 7th Northamptons, eldest son of Mr & Mrs C. Marriott, of 77 Cecil Rd, and Bertha Inwood, younger daughter of Mr Fred Inwood, formerly of Northampton. The bridegroom is well known is local swimming circles. He was the representative of the Bective Swimming Club on the Leather Trades’ League Committee and was also a member of the Northampton Amateur Swimming Club. He joined the 7th Northamptons on its formation and was soon promoted Sergeant. He was wounded at Dixsmunde on October 18th (1915) but made a good recovery at Trent Bridge Military Hospital. It is expected, however, that he will have to undergo a further operation to his arm before he is fit again for active service.

My Comments: Charles did join Col Mobbs 'Sportsmen) 7 Bn (to whom we do have a loose family connection).
The Information on Stanley's "number colleague in MGC" could unlock a few doors many thanks.

George Louis MARRIOTT b 1889 was a brother (in between) who enlisted into Northants Regt Special Res as a Shoehand No 8764. However, he died Jun 1912 (Reason NK).
Another 2 photo oft Stan to follow.....!

Sally,
I posted my G/dad yesterday (Sgt). These are last two I have of him in military, thought you may find them interesting?

Cpl Stanley Marriott b NORTHAMPTON both taken about 1914.

1. As Corporal in Army Pay Corps. Based at Warwick
2. In Periott costume (on the right - anyone recognise his mate?), must be for a military concert party! Periott's were famous music hall entertainment combinations of the day: A compere, juggler, joke teller, slaptick, singer and group events. No idea what my G/father's skill was but I inherited these genes but sadly not the costume. Professional touring companies used to appear opposite Abington Pk Hotel (APH) and the gates to park on Wellingbrough Rd.

Hello Phil,

First, the bad news, currently I have no-one matching Stanley Marriott by the details you give above. I do have a record of an Army Pay Corps concert party in Cairo in 1916. Did he make his way there at all?

However, I am a bit confused (which is par for the course with me, I'm afraid!)

Did Stanley remain in the APC throughout the war?

You mention the MGC, and they had plenty of concert parties; but what intruiged me was the photo of the group sitting on benches you posted on the previous page, beneath the one of the couple in the cameo.

The soldiers appear to be members of the Royal Artillery, I can't be sure, as I'm going by the general shape of their badge; however, what intruiged me is that they are sitting in front of what might be a stage with a painted backdrop. Can you determine what is actually behind them on the original?

The photo of Stanley and the two pierrots are low-res, so I cannot say for sure if I recognise them, but as I have a particular interest in local soldiers, I will certainly keep a lookout for him.

By the way, the group of pierrots who performed in Abington Park in Edwardian times were Grapho & Jackson's. They left to become the resident troupe at Saltburn-on-Sea.

Also, many thanks for providing the link to the Northamptonshire section of the WFA site. One of our members has created an individual site for the branch:

We also produce our own newsletter The Whizzbang. Would you be interested in wriiting an article on your relations?

Hi Kate.

Long time no see.  :)

I thought for a moment your last sentence to Phil was to me as
I put the link for him on the previous page.

Glad it wasn't as I wouldn't have wanted to write anything on my
own 3 men as I do not have enough other than basic information and
what Steve kindly noted, and TGWF therefore not my own work.

Will be in touch.

Hi JellyBean
Sorry for delay, happens frequently as unwell and drugs knock me out!
I'm a novice here and astonished at the depth and spread of knowledge. A couple of photos for Seahall has provoked interest, and so happy that it makes others happy. I put Stan's brief history and answers on previous page:
1. My G/dad Stan was in APC until end of 1917 when 60 who were at Warwick where had a dinner in local Woolpack hotel on occasion of being transferred to combatant units!! (he kept it secret from daughters and maybe from his wife?). Not all to same units - but he enlisted into MGC. His two service medals are stamped on rim as him in MGC not APC.
2. I need his war records and a son in law (who's ex-military like me) of another of his daughters should be applying. I will press for update. He was CQMS so vital role in provding equpiment for company.
3. I know Middle East and Russian front connection but never heard of Egyptian but I'll ask my aunt (it's difficult as she's far away and we both have mobility issues). I think she's fitter at 88 than I at 54, also best to ask these Qs in person too, so I'll ask my cousin's wife to do that!
4. Bench !! Yes never realised it could be a stage, that makes perfect reason for a picture to be taken too doesn't it? Never guessed connected - piccies only recently in our possession. Ta for info you gave on pro troupe - makes you sound local!!?
5. Cap badge - at 500% look all same shape and as Stan in APC then all must be APC. I know badges fairly well and would stake 50p on them being APC.
6. Whizzbang, yes had brief look on web. Yes I'll be honoured to write a piece - Needs picture - which one?, got original signed menu too!! what angle? how many words? Vital we use the info we all have keep memories and interest alive.
7. Other articles: I'm working on Stan due to him losing so many cousins etc http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Northamptonshire/Daventry.html . My recent posts on here in County I mention the angle of the 'family' who didn't come back. Project work with British Legion's to update their website

Regards

Please be aware that I have been in-formed that as our pictures are

Hi Nigel.

I do not mind the weather as I have been on 2 lots of antibiotics for
over a week and therefore been sleeping away the days.  :)

Only joking about the sleeping, feeling much better now though.

You can click with your right mouse button and save the picture into a
folder and then browse I suppose.

Or you could cut and paste the images into a word document.

If you have a problem let me know.

I did say I would not "put them out there" without consent so
I will not be putting them in the public domain myself.

Now these photos, what I was trying to say is where are they? Its that dughh question - are they just in this thread on here and to see them we have to go through each of the 20 odd pages or are they collectively available to see some where where we can just scroll through the photos?
Do I make sense?

On the road today and tomorrow so may be a day or two before I get back on here

Hi Sandy thanks for the response.   I know very little about my Grandfather, it's not a happy tale.    What I do know is that his from his paybook  Regimental Number 5875149  Date of Birth 13 Apr 04. I'm not sure when he first enlisted but he signed on for 9+3 on 17 Jul 25.  Against his signature he has put Cpl but in the portion about previous service it says Nil.  I don't quite understand this.   The only other things that I know are the places where he served and that at one time he was the Drum Major.  I have a few photos of the move to Iraq by air,  some of which are the same as the collection of the Northamptonshire Museums on Flicker.

During the Second World War I believe he served in Burma leaving his wife and three daughters in their house in Kettering.   It was during the war that my Grandmother got a job at the USAAF base at Grafton Underwood.   There then followed a relationship with an American Sergeant.   When my Grandfather returned, I assume in 1945, the family disintegrated and he was left on his own in this house in Kettering.   Any mention of my Grandfather was forbidden and certainly there was no contact with his daughters.

Sometime in the middle of 1979 my Mother was contacted by the Police and told that my grandfather had died.  I don't know how they found her to tell her.  I was stationed quite close at the time (I was in the RAF) I attended his funeral at Kettering Crematorium.  The house had fallen into dereliction and almost uninhabitable.   Every room was piled high with 30 years of junk.   Like I said not a happy story and as I get older it has become one of my deepest regrets that I wasn't allowed to know him.

Sometime relatives do not understand that other family members

It must have been a terrible time for the family and I really appreciate
you sharing with me.

some gaps for you.

Post by: Mark Fisher on Friday 13 July 12 16:56 BST (UK)
Hi Sandy

It seems that everything prior to 1945 was expunged from our family history.  I know when the family split up it had a very bad effect on my Mother, she was sent to live with an Aunt and that feeling of rejection has never left her.  All I have is a few Photos of (Walter) George Hunt and some mementos of his Army service.  There were some other family photos that were quickly snapped up by my Mother and Aunts who were desperate to have some record of their childhoods.   After his funeral we briefly talked to a neighbour who said that he had worked in shoe factory before retirement.

Does the name Clifford Jordan mean anything in relation to someone else serving, probably in the band of the Northamptonshire Regiment?  I only ask as written in pencil in the back of his Paybook is this:  "Good Luck boy and God bless you Your Best Pal Cliff Jordan  Blackdown 11 April 27"
Title: Re: Photo's of Northamptonshire Men/Women Both Wars Wanted Please

I am afraid I do not know of a Clifford Jordan.

Maybe contacting Northampton Musuem would be usefull.

Have you applied for Walter's service record being his grand-son
as you do not say if your Mother is still living.

Hi Sandy

Glad to help  :)

Any pointers on earlier wars?  A great grandfather is missing in 1891 and 1901 (comes home in between as he marries and has children) and in a photo later in his life we can see medals poking out from under his jacket.

Have seen a name matching his on a site but nothing to confirm it is him?  Just wondered if there was anywhere I could start looking?

Earlier service records are generally stored at the National Archives under the archive series of files referenced as WO97. FindMyPast has these digitalised. The search index often has a date and place of birth. If he served in a campaign in India or South Africa then medal entitlement would be in WO100 (though with no identifying details). WO100 is on Ancestry. It might be an idea to start a new topic asking for help, since we would not want to derail Sandy's main request topic here.

Incidentally, are you the one who Sandy is looking for details of Amos John Floyd Brooks for?

Shame it said Harlestone Village Institute and not where it was.

As my hubby and I have lived in Northants all our lives, I was not even

Lots of folk attended.

Just image if it wasn't for Rootschat I would never have known and only

Still no answer to my letters which is not surprising seeing 1st
Class letters and 2nd Class take so long nowadays to arrive.

Yesterday I spent over £17.00 having the 2 articles photocopied
as I realised I would miss having a record of them for myself after
looking after them for 2 years.

Fingers crossed that I get a result, otherwise I will give them to a museum
as I don't want the responsibility of them any longer, mainly because the
embroidery is getting creased and ruined and they deserve to be looked
after properly, not left in the envelope they were sent to me in.

Hi Seahall.
I am currently on a project to research the Northamptonshire Regt in WW1. Initially I wanted to do a Regt History, but find myself drawn towards the men rather than the Regt as a whole. I am collecting photos of headstones whilst on the Western Front and now comes the hard bit of putting faces to the names. I have a few good leads and have been given this link as a handy tip.
If we could do some mutual assistance here ie; I load my headstone photos and any images I have been supplied is there any chance of seeing if any of the names I have match images you have ?
I am really after mini Biographies of the men to add to images.
I would also like to match images to the men who have no known grave but and remebered at places like Loos
I hope this makes sense

He managed to bring out the wood panelling and plates on the wall

So in case any other family members see their rellies in the

I have posted in The Common Room also.

A Letter I would have written to Harry.

22nd March 2013

Pte. Harry Freer 54, Cyclists Corps 1894 - 15.03.1918

Dear Harry.

I wonder what led to your family photograph and silk embroidery to your Mother
(hidden behind a photo frame brought in France many years later) from World War One.
I wonder if you placed them there hoping one day that your precious items would
eventually be re-united with your loved ones in “Blighty”.
If that was your wish Harry then it has nearly been accomplished after so very, many years.

Through the Rootschat forum and another Rootschatter who asked about you in
June of 2009 the jigsaw is nearly complete.

I have a topic myself asking for photographs, information, etc on the Northamptonshire Board
and amazingly I still get offers of personal items regularly, therefore I gratefully appreciate
the Rootschatters who have assisted me and now your family.
I  was intrigued by your story and this is what led to me being custodian, until now, of
the 2 treasures hidden away all those years ago.

I have tried endless avenues over the time that I was given the items in September 2009
to re-unite them with any remaining relatives you still had Harry.
These relatives would obviously not be known to you because of your un-timely death in
WW1 losing your own life 15 March 1918 (now over 95 years).

How many Mothers, Fathers, Son, Daughters, Nieces and Nephews, Aunts and Uncles
etc, lost their loved ones over the 4 year period like yourself and later through the War and beyond.
I could never imagine the heart-ache and grief that must have been suffered the World over.

I do know that it has been a huge struggle over the last 2 years to find any links to your family
Harry, then just a month ago I found a link to your loved ones through your Service Record, I
then wrote letters to what I hoped was 3 living relatives.

I wonder if you could image the dis-appointment I felt when I got no replies for awhile.
I watched the letter box every day, hoping just one letter would get me an answer so I
could return your priceless keepsakes. I received one letter in reply, but it did not help.

My husband told me not to give up after trying for so long but I am afraid the time came
when I felt I could do no more and would have to place your mementoes in a Museum.
It was not a decision I took lightly, but at least someone would be able to see your family
photo and also the wonderful embroidery you stitched, (like so many others) to your Mother.

Other Rootchatters on the forum recently assisted me in enhancing your photo Harry,
to whom I am extremely grateful.
My Husband also did a copy for me, and today I took it to a museum with a copy of your
silk embroidery. The Museum said that wanted to laminate them so could not
use the original items.

How very glad I was Harry, because today I received a letter from a family member
of one of your siblings. They thanked me for writing to the relative who passed
the letter on and would welcome the items etc.
I wonder yet again Harry, whether all those years ago, if that is what you really hoped for,
obviously we will never know.

I also wonder if without the Rootschat Forum which has such dedicated people assisting
others in all manner of ways that this story would have the happy ending that will
now happen because of someone finding your memories and they being returned to England.

It has been a privilege Harry never having known you, yet becoming close to you as a
Mother of 2 sons myself, to have been involved in your story.
I can feel the pride your Mother would have felt if she had known of the wonderful tribute
you stitched and will be delighted to return it to your own sisters family member.

I personally would like to thank Rootschat for allowing me to be part of what has been a
successful end to a moving story which may never have begun without the internet,
the forum, and then a topic asking for assistance to re-unite your belongings.

You can take heart now Harry and know your treasures have reached across the seas
and will be truly where they belong, back with the Freer family.

but today I received another letter from Harry's relative who wants to
meet up in the near future.  ;D ;D ;D

I personally can't wait.

Harry's story gets more complex by the minute. Well for me.  :)

I have just received in the post from the National Returns Centre
in BELFAST one of the 1st letters I wrote on 17th Feb 2013.

I personally had all 3 weighed at the Post Office and it says insufficient
postage of 9p.

The person was notified that there was a letter and there would also be
a £1.00 handling fee and as I myself would have done, did not collect it.

So by the 14th March 2013 it was noted that it had not been collected
and between that date and now the letter was opened, presumably
read and returned to me today at 1.20 p.m.

Our post nowadays arrives as late as 4.00.p.m.  >:(

I suppose at least I now know it did not get to the person in question.

I wonder if Rosemarie above got the remembrance card I sent over 2
weeks ago, it makes me think. Not asking for a thank you, just curious.

Yes Rosemarie did, as she e-mailed the same day.  :)

After searching for Harry's relatives for 2½ years and finally speaking
on the phone to his Great Niece I have found that one of Great Grand Aunt's
through her marriage relates to Percy, Harry's brother.

As all my relatives come from Little Harrowden since 1795 once I saw
the village in her line I then checked my own family on Anc**** trees
for my 2nd great grandfather and found the link.

What an unbelievable coincident.  So excited.  :)

Now I am trying to piece together how his great niece and myself are related.
This means I have had to make a ftm file of her tree which took me most
of the morning, look and alter 4 other gedcom files so the layouts are the same
(still doing) and then do a kinship report.

Hi.
I asked for the thread in the Common Room about Harry to be closed.

There were 2 reasons, firstly after the phone call to the great niece
all contact ceased from her side.
I e-mailed her to tell her about our connection, still no reply.
Secondly I was beginning to feel by way of personal messages (PMs) that folks did not
believe she existed.
I have never known myself to lie, (only white ones not to hurt folks feelings)
therefore I felt upset by this.
I therefore on Monday after insisting my Hubby took me to where she
said she lived put copies of Harry's items through her letter box so I
at least fulfilled my part of the bargain I made with James (mackintosh).
I did find a living relative and hopefully she now knows what Harry and his
family looks like and has seen his Mother's silk.
I also told the person about the other family member she knew nothing about.
Hopefully now they may make contact and share photos etc, I sincerely hope so.
I have a tree to Harry now on Anc**** and now consider his story finished here.
I was honoured to be a part of his story and finding a link to Harry with my own tree.

Lest We Forget.

On a lighter note only the other day another Rootschatter sent me some of
their relatives for my project.

After saturating this thread with Harry's story  :-[ it is good that folk are still
asking if I am doing my project, and I am extremely grateful to them for the
photographs and information they recently sent.

Don't worry about 'saturating' the thread with Harry - it has been a wonderful story and I wouldn't have wanted to miss any of it.  You did a fantastic job and should be very proud.  :D

It's great that you are still getting Northamptonshire men and women for your project, I'll have to do another look around to see if I've missed anyone!  ;D
