Title: Lock keeper Haddon
Post by: Yiannis 76 on Monday 24 August 09 16:12 BST (UK)
Hi,

I'm looking for any information on lock keeping at Haddon.
We have an ancestor Thomas Goodliffe on the 1851 census whoose occupation is a Lock Keeper, he is 75 years old so i'm assuming he's a retired lock keeper. His place of birth was listed as Leicester Haddon but in 1851 he was living in Tallington in Lincs.

I know that there are Locks at Watford near West haddon in Northamptonshire. The leicester reference is confusing however it could be that it is listed due to the canal being the Grand Union Canal leicester.

Any thoughts are welcome.

thank you

He need not necessarily have been retired. Many people at that time just kept on working until they dropped!

He might have been a lock-keeper on the Stamford canal which ran through Tallington http://www.cbats.bubbleeventservices.co.uk/cbats/tallington/html/its_history.html

Hi JenB,

This information is excellent thanks, lots to think about. My mistake it was the 1861 census that he appears on. The canal was closed in 1863 according to wikipedia. We cannot read the census very well so we are guessing somewhat.

On the off chance do you know of anywhere called Headdon in Leicester?

Thank you

It looks as if Thomas was also working as a lock-keeper in Tallington in the 1841 census.
Have you got the entry?

Hi Jen

No we don't have that entry - can you tell us the details please?
Where is he listed as being born?

Many thanks

Unfortunately the 1841 doesn't give place of birth - only whether or not the person was born in or out of the county in which they were residing. In this case Thomas is shown as born outside of Lincolnshire.

He is entered as Thomas Goodley, but given that he has an 18 year old son called Charles and in the 1861 he has a 38 year old son called Charles I think it has to be the right person.

HO 107/ 623/ Book 1/ Folio 8/ Page 8
Tallington

Thomas Goodley, 50, lock keeper, N
Elenor do, 50, N
Charles do, 18, Y
George do, 16, Y
Charlotte do, 3, Y

Note that in this census ages for adults were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years.

Hi,
There is a Haddon  just SW of Peterborough sometimes down as in Hunts, Northhants but also very near Leicestershire. Not too far from Samford, all in/near  the Fens area.
Best wishes
 Cathy :)

Yes, there are two options for haddon, one near daventry, the other nr peterbo'.

I've attached an image to see if anyone has another idea as to the location of Thomas Goodliffes place of birth? or which is most likely.

Hi ricky1,

It could well be, the Haddon checks out and his age is within 2yrs to the 1861. The rest of his family seem to be elusive and change over the period 1841-1861.

thanks v. mucy for the info.

Yiannis, I would say it was definitely the same family all the way through.
People were much more vague about their ages then than we are now.

I think you're right, I don't have charles and elizabeth on the 1851, if you could find them that would be great.

thanks

This is what part of the canal is like today (not at Tallington, but near Uffington, a couple of miles to the west). http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/608236

There is a footpath alongside part of it which I walked a few years ago when my knees were in better condition than they are today  ;D

Thanks Ricky, that's great.
I need to piece it all together now and see what to investigate next, i've looked for Charles and Elizabeths marriage but to no avail.

For the record I think the 1861 census says Leicester, Hadden.

What looks like an 'e' as the second letter is in fact a loop of the initial 'H'. The enumerator wrote 'e' in a rather strange way (see how he has written it in Leicester.)

In reply to Ricky, i'm pretty sure that marriage of 1849 is the right one and that Charles' wife is Elizabeth Meadows, as their son John Goodliffe is living with a Meadows family in 1881.

thanks alot

Hi, just come across this conversation. My Dad- Charles Goodliffe was born in the Lock keepers house that was situated just outside of Tallington (it was totally demolished a few years ago). I believe that Thomas is a direct descendent possible g g g g grandad. From info i have i believe his Father was George. Does anyone have further information on location of birth etc.?
