Hi
Have just looked up my grans grandfathers birth entry (that would make him my gg grandfather (?)) and it turns out he was born in General prison perth in 1868. Hi mother Janet Fisher is registered on it as prisoner although his father is not in jail.
How would I find out why she was in prison?
I searched for Perth Prison archives but cant get anything.
Any ideas? ???

Hi Justine,
Was this Janet Fisher m.s. Thomson? If so, there are entries on the National Archives of Scotland site for her dated 1874 and 1876, both for the crime of theft and previous convictions (probably including her time during 1868).
In 1874, she was 28 and staying at Union Street, Maxwellton, Dundee.
In 1876, she was 29 and staying at Nethergate, Dundee.
The link to the online catalogue is: http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/. Search for "Janet Fisher" under phrase and you should get it along with other unrelated entries.
