Hi all,
I've been trying for quite some time to locate James McMahon and his family in the 1851 census, but no luck. I'm hoping someone else might be able to find what I have missed!
I have found them in the 1841 census as follows:
At Chapel Court, Gorbals
James McMaghen, 35, tailor, born Ireland,
Mary, age 30, born Ireland
Margaret, age 7, born England
Bernard, age 5, born Lanarkshire
James, age 4, born Lanarkshire
Also boarders Ann Stewart 25, and Margaret Stewart 12
By the 1861 census Mary had died, but I have:
35 Old Vennel, Glasgow
James McMahon, age 60, journeyman tailor, born Ireland.
I know from poor relief records that they were living at 80 High Street in 1847/48, and that in 1853 they were living at 100 High Street.
Mary died in 1856 at the City Poorhouse Glasgow.
I would appreciate any help at all with this.
Thanks,
Anne

This is the only thing I can see that is anything remotely like the family but as you can see ages and places of birth are out. Did it mention Edinburgh in the poorhouse application?
I don't know what SP have it indexed as but a seach for Bernard M*a*n in the same household as a James gives 1 hit.
Michael Bailes 55
Margaret Bailes 52
Garret Bailes 21
John Bailes 18
James Morchan 50 Tailor Journeyman
Mary Morchan 42
Bernard Morchan 12 b Ireland
James Morchan 10 b Ireland
Patrick Morchan 8 b Ireland
John Clanney 40
James Judge 53
Archibald Simpson 17
1851 - at Morrisons close, Edinburgh.
Did James senior marry again? It looks like him living with a Mary in 1871 at Glasgow.
Regards,
Nel

Nel,
Thank you so much :) :)
This is the family for sure! I don't know why they were in Edinburgh, but it is definitely them. Patrick, the youngest one mentioned is my husband's great grandfather. He was listed on the poor records as working in a tobacconists.
I see the 1871 census you mention, and it also looks to be James. I will check to see if there are any more marriages for him.
I haven't been able to find James's death yet either. Gone through a ton of SP credits, but I think all the variations in spelling have thrown me off.
Thanks again for your help Nel, I appreciate it so much.
Cheers,
Anne
