Hi
You can order direct from the General Register Office itself for 7 GDP (if you know the references ie Qtr, Vol no & Page no).

Hello Cilla. If the certificates that you require are from the Durham area and you have the dates etc go to Durham records in Durham city.
You can then print off the church entries for Baptism marriages etc for 20p (may be a bit more now)
You will get virtually the same information-as as the bought certificates.

Thanks for that. By the records office do you mean county hall? Because i think you need a appointment there not sure
Kind regards

I think it is 50p now from Durham Records Office.
And you have to book for a fitche reader, but there are only open Monday-thursday, shut Fri, Sat, Sun.

Hi is that at County Hall I am new to all this
Thanks

nd.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice
This is the link to the records office, looking though it will answer all questions

Hello Cilla. Yes that is County Hall. Even if you can not get to County Hall, give then a ring and like I said before, if you have the name and date they will photo copy them and post them to your address.
The last time they did it for me it was £2.50 and that is still cheaper than ordering the certificate.
It is only a phone call and the staff are very helpful

Thanks to everyone you have been a great help
Kind regards
Cilla :)

For info
A baptism record will probably NOT have the mothers maiden name, a birth certificate WILL
A burial record will probably NOT have a date or cause of death, a death certificate WILL
Also informants on birth & death certificates can sometimes lead to other avenues & help with research.
Cheers

Here's the link to DCC BMD index (not yet complete). You can order via the net & the cost is £7 per cert.
http://www.durham.gov.uk/Pages/Service.aspx?ServiceId=663
Never pay more than £7 for a BMD cert.

Boo drags out her soap box :-)
I get so cross about Ancestry doing this, £19.95 to get a cert within 16 days and £39.95 for their 'express' service within 6 days? Its extortionate! - and if there is any mention on their site that you can order direct from the GRO for less than half the cost then its well hidden
I have had lots via the GRO online ordering service, never paid more than £7, longest I have waited is a week.
Durham Registrars and Gateshead Registrars are superb and have helped enormously if I am uncertain if I am ordering the correct certificate - again cost is £7.
GRO certs v local registrars certs
you get the same information on them, but often the GRO photocopy the original entry onto the certificate, which makes it look more 'of the time' kind of thing. The local registrar doesn't usually have the facility to do that and will hand write or type up the certificate for you.
Better get down off my soap box before I get dizzy :-)
Good luck with your research

Hello again. But!! If it is a Catholic baptism it will have the birth date, baptism date, child's name, both
parents names, maiden name, sponsors names, priest, and sometimes in the margins, who the child married.
When the child marries the church that they are going to be married , writes to the priest to get confirmation that the person is catholic. The priest will then reply and sometimes makes a note of the Church and the date of the marriage.
So quite a lot of information if you are lucky.

Hello again. I thought I would give an example of a Catholic baptism.
Maria McAninly, born 27/September/1895, baptised 6/October/1895, parents Patrick and Catherine McAninly, maiden name Conroy, sponsors Thomas Lowrey and Catherine McAninly, priest Ft J R Wood,
priests note:- married 22/February/1916 in New York to William Brady.
I know the Catholic records have limitations because they do not go as far back as the church of England records but they can be useful.

Ah, having no experience of RC records my info refers to CofE & Methodist baptism, & CofE burials.

All of mine will be C of E or Methodist. I really appreciate all the info
Thanks again to everyone

GRO v Local
Boo wrote "..... GRO photocopy the original entry onto the certificate.... "
There is only one original entry and that never leaves it's home Register Office.
As we know, all England/Wales ROs forwarded copies of BMD events quarterly to GRO. GRO then copied the info into it's own volumes, with it's own filing references.
A "copy" certificate from GRO looks "appropriate" copied onto the format of the original register. But it still just a copy of a copy.
GRO never even got to see the original entry in the orginal register.
Many local ROs do indeed today just copy by typewriting or handwriting the details from the register onto a formatted copy cert.
However , for one, Sunderland RO for many years, has provided a true copy, I'll call it a facsimile, of the original register entryusing overhead copier.
Thus providing a real picture of participants handwriting. A copy marriage cert from Sunderland showed at least 5 different sets of handwriting. GRO cannot do this as GRO never got to see the handwriting.
In very recent times Durham County Council has centralised all its BMD records, and it too provides "pictures" of our ancestors writing. GRO cannot do this.

Oops... I should have emphasised that Sunderland RO and Durham CC "facsimiles" arer only for marriage certificates.

And Darlington also send you copies of the Orginal marriage certificates, or all the ones i have are.

Stockton events held at Stockton Register Office, Hartlepool events held at Hartlepool Register Office

That site will only be any good if someone has submitted the information from a certificate you are after.

Hi Michael - hope you are well :-)
Yes, sorry, you are correct of course but many register offices don't have the facility to copy onto certs and I kinda like the certificate to at least 'look' contemporary. The recently produced ones look so 'bare' when they are typed out to order. I know that the information is correct and gives me the clues to take things further, but I like nice looking too. :-)

I have today sent for a cert from Bishop auckland, it was a Easington birth.
I phoned Easington then had to phone Bishop as most records for Durham area are there. So i will see when it comes if it is typed or scanned
I will let you know
Cilla
-
Cilla i'm 99% certain you'll receive a typed cert :(
-
JayG is right it is only marriage certificates that you are likely to get a photo copy of the original certificate, birth and deaths you may get an original copy but it is typewritten.
JR
-
When they started issuing scanned copies of marriage certs from Bishop Auckland RO I asked if the births & deaths would be the same. The answer was yes, but not until the online indexes had been complete, as these are a long way off we'll be waiting a while for these :(
