Hi anyone.
I am researching my Father in laws family tree in NZ. I am trying to track down when Edward Thomas Barker born 30 Jan 1871 in Wellington NZ, came over to Australia. So far I cannot find anything. If anyone can help that would be great.
Also ET Barker's father is also Edward Barker and was apparently a Maori but we have no information on him except what is on ET Barker's B/cert, which isn't much.

Hello algrass
... welcome to RootsChat. :)
I'm presuming that Edward Thomas BARKER died in Australia ?
* Do you have his death certificate ?
Australian certificates generally carry a lot of helpful information, and his death certificate should provide you with an idea of how long he had resided there.
Edward BARKER - [father of Edward Thomas BARKER]
* Who did he marry ?
* Who was the mother of Edward Thomas ?

Hello Lucy2,
Sorry I should have been more clearer. No I do not have his death certificate as ET Barker died in South Australia, but I have his NZ birth certificate, which states that his father is Edward Barker from Wellington NZ, and his mother as Henrietta Sophia Barker nee Tanis
Et Barker's father was a shoemaker in Wellington. Et Barker married Catherine Teresa Barker nee Bennett from Mt Gambier in South Australia.
I hope this makes it clearer.

Hi Al
I've done an extensive search but have not been able to find a solitary mention of (the father) Edward BARKER in Wellington or other NZ records. [Still need to check early electoral rolls - these are not available online].
I'm familiar with some Australian states' BDM records, but alas, know little about those in South Australia. [There is however information available on RootsChat's Australian board - see Resources section - as to what is contained in SA BDM records].
I do think that if you are going to make some progress, then obtaining the death record for Edward Thomas, would be a good move.
There are very few shipping records that remain, for voyages to and from Australia ... and it's more likely that you would find passenger details recorded at a "port of arrival" (than at a departure point). Newspapers of the day, often carried such passenger lists ... but bear in mind, that in many, passengers names were not actually detailed - especially if they travelled "steerage class".

Hi again
I tried also to find records for "Mrs BARKER" (Henrietta Sophia) ... again ... there was nothing available.
Interestingly, and due to some quirky problem the NZ BDM people had with loading information onto their online database, the marriage for Edward BARKER in 1870, shows, only as that ... i.e. no name has been given for his bride. ::)
From another source (NZSG Marriages CD), the bride is shown as "Henrietta S. TAMS" (rather than "Tanis") ???
I found no records for TANIS ... and whilst there were a few records of other "TAMS" marriages, these were in much later years ... so unlikely to be relatives of Henrietta.
* Have you tried looking for deaths in South Australia for Henrietta and Edward BARKER ?

Hi Lu
Thankyou for all your help so far. We assume probably wrongly that Edward and Henrietta died in Wellington.
-
Also ET Barker's father is also Edward Barker and was apparently a Maori ... but we have no information on him ....
Hi Al
Can I also ask, why it is, you think that Edward BARKER was "apparently Maori" ??
Lu

THat is what my father in Law Brian was told of his parents.

Hi Al
Yes, there is NO record of a death on the NZ index, for "a Henrietta BARKER".
There are two "Edward BARKER" deaths (index does not state place of death) ... 1923 - aged 75 - born circa 1848 ... and 1926 aged 81 - bc 1845 : ??? (No burials found in Wellington)
They seem unlikely though (unless Henrietta moved elsewhere, without Edward) ?

Hi
... you say parents ... so is there perhaps a possibilty that Henrietta Sophia, was of Maori birth ?
-
Hi Lu,
Is it possible to get a copy of the data
thanks Al
-
Hi Lu
It is possible as I have been finding out when it comes to genes anything is possible.
-
Sorry Lu Think I have unlocked it now.
-
Hi Al
Yes ... it's unlocked now. :)

Hi
I had just wondered if you knew of any other siblings, that we could follow to find more on parents?
There is a Sophia Barker at Bolton Cem wellington
and some Edward's south island, but they probably belong to Canterbury/OTago lot
I am a Barker follower, but mine are top waikato north.

There is a Sophia Barker at Bolton Cem wellington
Hi Althea
Mmm ... yes, I'd checked the Wellington City Council cemeteries database ... and this Sophia BARKER does not appear there under Bolton Street cemetery listings. [I never quite trust the information from the Friends of Bolton Street Cemetery, website ... there appears to be a lot of errors. ;)]
It would seem though, the "Sophia Barker died 1918" is more likely to be ... Sophia BARBER - d. 1918 aged 81 years. ?
[Name BARBER mistranscribed as Barker ? ]

Hi Al
Was there a "Henrietta Sophia Catherine BARKER" in the family ?
Lu
-
Hi althea, As far as we know Edward Thomas Barker was ans only child of Edward Barker and Henrietta Sophia Barker nee Tams.
Thankyou
Al

Hi again Al
Thanks for your PM.
I've now checked the early electoral rolls for Wellington, and I'm afraid I could find no mention at all of "Edward BARKER".
It seems very possible that they only stayed in Wellington for a short time before going on to Australia ?

Al
The "Henrietta Sophia Catherine BARKER" name (back in reply # 16) I found on the R/Chat Australian board in the Resources section, under South Australia listings.
Sorry ... I can't recall now exactly what the link was ... but the name came up under "a cemetery search".
There was also a "hit" for Edward Thomas BARKER" - but I guess you already have that ?

Hi, Lucy,
Yes thankyou I have them. I actually got them last week as well as Edward Barker who died in Millicent SA not Wellington NZ as previously thought.
Again thankyou for checking
