Title: Cemetery/ Churchyard Burnopfield area ?
Post by: Tickettyboo on Saturday 22 August 09 04:54 BST (UK)
I have a copy of a death announcement in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle , dated 15th July 1905.
 it reads:

Saturday July 15th 1905 page 2

GILLILAND -- Hobson, Burnopfield, died July 13th.  Mary E.
(Minnie) Gilliland wife of Jas. Gilliland.  Interment at
Leazes on Sunday.  Service in the Chapel at 3.

I had previously got a transcription ( done by NDFHS) of a burial record for this lady, but that says she was buried on 11th July at Burnopfield ( that date seems a tad previous to me!)

Could anyone advise where this cemetery was likely to be? I think it may have been a churchyard but don't know which church.

Thanks
Boo

There is what the map calls a Grave Yard on the north side of the B6310 road at Leazes travelling westwards towards High Friarside. A Church/Chapel is opposite the Grave Yard on the south side of B6310.

Hi Boo
I would think it would be St James. Leazes is part of Burnopfield. You can see an old map at this link.
http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm
If you click on the search tab and enter the postcode NE16 6JE it should bring up a modern day map.
From the select map drop down box choose the 1951-1959 map (that is the best image) the church and graveyard are just to the north.

Gary

Just to add there is a burial for a Mary Gilliland 11th July 1905, no age listed, at St James Burnopfield. Could this be her?
Entry is listed in the NBI.

Thanks, both for the info and for taking the time to help :-)
Will look at that.

Thank you, that map place is great :-)  I think I have been there before but had forgotten about it. I think that the entry in the NBI 'is' her, but am confused ( often!) about the date.  I have a friend in the UK who is planning a visit to Durham Records Office, now I know which church it is I will ask him to look at the parish register for me.

Mary Gilliand died Thursday 13 July 1905
Death Announcement Saturday 15 July
Burial Service Sunday 16 July

11 July is possibly an error made by the person officiating at the funeral who entered the date wrong in the parish register.

Hi Barry

Yes, I think it is an error, but until I see the parish register I can't be sure if its a transcription error or one made at the time the entry was made in the register. I am sure that the death notice is for the right person though.

Thanks again for taking the time to help.

St. James Church, Burnopfield is the Parish Church if you live in Burnopfield, The Leazes, The Lintz, The Hobson  to name a few.

This church is just up the road from me and pass it often,  if I get a chance at the weekend I will have a look around to see if I can find a grave and take a photo for you.

I had a look around the cemetary, however no luck finding a grave.  the graves around the turn of the century are few and far between, quite a few have fallen over and there are large gaps.

There are a few graves over the road in the church ground, I will have a look there next, would have done it at the same time but Autumn came early and the wind and rain came with a vengeance.  :(

I will let you know if I find anything.

Hi Emma

Thank you that was very kind.

Hand in the air, I don't know if there even was a gravestone, though get the feeling there may have been. Whether its survived is another matter, I suppose

I will be away for a month from later today so please excuse me if you post again and it looks like I am ignoring you. I will try to look in here now and then while I am away

I really do appreciate your efforts :-)

Hello Boo,

I came across your request as I was looking through some threads for Burnopfield . I attend St James church, Burnopfield and I have looked up the details in our church register today for you.

Name       Mary Elizabeth Gilliland
Abode       Hobson Colliery
Date         Buried July 16th 1905
Age           34 yrs

The other comment is   B.Dennison. not according to the rites of Church of England.
I wonder if he was the Methodist Minister because remember in the death notice it did say service at chapel at 3. I remember that there was a chapel at the Hobson but of course they did not have a graveyard there. Burnopfield is very close to Hobson.
Incidently while I was looking this up one person said that he went to school with a Gilliland and somebody else knows of a Gilliland who will be in his 60's and live in nearby Lanchester!
Hope this helps.

Oh that was really kind of you, thank you !

This lady had the maiden name of Gardiner and, in 1891, her Dad was listed as a Coal miner and Post Master, Mary Elizabeth was 19 and her occupation was listed as 'Letter Carrier', which I thought was a wonderful title :-)

The Gilliland's aren't 'mine' but belong to a friend of mine who I help with his tree. I believe he has a Gilliand cousin in the Lanchester area. Most of the family that we have found from that era were Methodists, so its likely that she was too.

I will pass the info on to my friend and hopefully next time he is in Durham he can find a copy of the record at the DRO.
Thank you so much for taking the time to look for me, it really is appreciated.

I am sorry to pick on you out of the blue, but this is the first time I have used the site and I am finding it very difficult to use.

If I have read your posts and replies correctly, you know St. James Burnopfield very well and can perhaps tell me who to contact to find out if my great-grandparents John Matthew Trotter and Mary Annie Trotter (nee Sanderson) are buried there and some clues as to whereabouts in the graveyard as I am due for a visit up North later this month. They were both living in Burnopfield when she died in 1900 and he in 1909.

I will not be offended if you don't reply as it is probably the height of rudeness to do what I am doing, but I don't know the proper way to ask this question. Please don't ban me as I am hoping to get better at using the site

Welcome to Rootschat

The way things work is  through the kindness of strangers who have a common interest in genealogy. Whether in forums like this one, or transcriptions that are online, we all benefit from the knowledge and work of others and , in turn, we answer questions in here if we think we can help.
I asked the original question in this thread. Initially I wanted to know which cemetery it was likely to be. That would then lead me to pinpoint the right register at the archives to look through and find the entry to give me the info I wanted. I was very lucky (and grateful) that I got way more than that and someone who was able to look up the register took the time to do so and give me the information. Since then, the friend I was helping has visited the archives and now has a copy of the page which shows the burial entry.
Someone may see your question in this thread and be able to help with specifics. I can't, sorry,  but I can tell you that, if you don't get a specific reply in here then Durham Records office have copies of the burial registers for the years you need. If you are going to be in the Durham area and still don't know 'if' they were buried at St James, you can look it up at the archives office.

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to reply and many apologies because actually I thought I was writing to Daz123 who seems to be able to look up burials in St. James Church, Burnopfield which she attends. As I said before, I am not finding this site very easy to use, but I am sure I will get used to it.

Thank you once again
