I have just found some old photographs of family members, although I can't indentify the sitters, which were taken in the East London area at the following establishments;
Calvert 192 Barking Road
A.J. Hilder 267 Barking Road Plaistow
J.E. Reeves 50 Hermit Road Canning Town
F.W. Clark 19 Alice Road Stratford.
There was also one taken at the Star Photographic Studio in Wellington, Nilgiris, India.
Does anyone know about these company's or where i would best look to find out about them? Ideally I would like to know when they started up and closed down the business.

Hi
AJ Hilder appears on the photolondon.org.uk site - listed at that address in 1891 and 1901 Census.
Best wishes

This is another site that I've found helpful

This is the site you want.

If you can scan the photos front & back & put them on here we'll probably be able to date them more accurately.

Thank you for the pointers. Very helpful.

I know the original post was now quite a long time ago, but I wondered if you are still looking for information? I know a bit about J.E. Reeves as he was my gt gt grandfather.

Hi Eliza,
Great to hear from you.
I was given a few old photos a couple of years ago but didn't know who the sitters were. At the time of the original post I was looking to see if the photographers kept a log of their customers and if they were in existence. Also I was trying to date them to figure out who was who from that information.
I have attached the photo for you, in case you don't have any examples of your ancestors work.
I would like to know the years the studio was open and if any of his records survived?
Kind regards
Paul

Wonderful photo...the lady has quite a bit of bling on her wedding finger :)
Datewise I would suggest about 1898-1900ish, as she is wearing the puffball sleeving that were in style after the huge gigot sleeves went out of fashion in 1897. Give or take a year or so.
There is some information on J. E. Reeves' financial proceedings here:

Many thanks for the photo, Paul. As a family we have a couple that might have been taken either by him or by his daughter and son-in-law, so it is lovely to see this one. One he took of the West Ham Football Team was in an auction of football stuff fairly recently.
I'll dig out exactly what I have over the weekend, and get back.
Yes, China, the financial stuff is interesting and we suspect it may have been one of the factors that prompted his move to Australia!

Hello again, Paul.
I've been through my information. John Reeves and his family moved into 48 & 50 Hermit Road in the late 1890s. He doesn't seem to have been there in 1896 but he was in 1899. He stayed there until he left for Australia in May 1911.
During the period between October 1906 and May 1908 he was subject to bankruptcy proceedings but he seems to have continued in the business during this time. From 1899 he was employing his eldest daughter's husband and after he left for Australia they continued but in their own name (Hills).
Hope this is of some use. If I find any more I'll add it to this thread.
Regards,
Elizabeth

That's great, with those dates I can narrow down a list of most likely ancestors.

I would also like information regarding J E Reeves photographers of 50 Hermitage Road Canning Town as I have found photographs taken by them c1900

I have copies of two old photos and I am trying to date them. I know at least one of them was taken by J E Reeves of Hemitage Road Canningtown because his name appears at the bottom. I know the names of the people concerned and would like to try and find out if they are wedding photos or whether they commemorate something else. JANCHAP

Scan them at 300dpi & resize them so they are under 500Kb. & put them on here under a new topic & we'll date them for you.
Also scan the backs if here's anything on them.
