Hello
I have received a birth Cert for my 4x great grandmother today and have found that her mother is not who I thought she was.
Isabella Kane was born 17 June 1841 in Westoe. To Francis and Isabella Kane (formerly Grewcock) Sadly looking at the BMD, her mother died in the June quarter I can only assume after giving birth.
I believe that the 1841 census was taken on June 6th, however I have been unable to find Francis(born Ireland abt 1815), his wife Isabella and their son Henry who was born 1838 South Shields, quite probably in Westoe too.
I have also had trouble finding Francis, Isabella jr and Henry on the 1851 census.
Francis remarried in 1855 to Mary Ann Carlisson
Isabella was living at Willow cottages, westoe with an Aunt in 1861 aged 19 prior to marrying William Small in Newcastle a few months later.
I would be grateful if anyone can find her parents and brother on 1841 and her on the 1851 census.
I have also looked at the bishops transcripts for Holy Trinity on the pilot on family search for a baptism for her or a burial for her mother but haven't managed to find anything so If anyone has access to parish records (I have searched durham records online) and can find the burial, that would be great.
Thanks in advance
Emma

What was Francis' occupation on the birth certificate, and where were they living at the time of the birth?

I still cant find them all in 1841
Neither can I. I checked Brunswick Street, but will do so again to be certain.

wow thank you all for what you have found so far.
Interestingly Francis is shown as a Labourer on the Birth cert for Isabella, I wonder what his Job as a Soda Manufacturer involved.
Alan, thanks for the 1851 census info and the newspaper death notices.
Trish, I think it is my tree you found on Ancestry.
I will continue searching for 1841.
Thanks again

Emma, is there an address given on the 1841 birth certificate?
Jennifer

Jennifer
It is Green Street, Westoe, South Shields. This is the place of birth and the address of her Father who registered the birth.

Green Street comes immediately after Brunswick Street, which is where she died according to the newspaper report.
And immediately after Green Street is Grewcocks Buildings, which is where Susan(na) might have been living (see my post 3 above).
However, none of this information is much use, because I still can't find them >:(

I think soda manufacturer means that he worked in a chemicals factory. There were a few in South Shields at the time, making caustic soda or sulphate of soda, pretty unpleasant stuff.

Possible 1841 ???

I thought I had replied on this one, I obviously never hit Post. :-[
This could easily be him in 1841 if soda manufacturer did mean he worked in a chemical factory as Alan suggested.
So maybe I just looking for wife Isabella & son Henry now?
Thnaks

A final roundup
Francis Kane married Isabella Grewcock
They had 3 children
Henry Kane born 1838
Susannah Catherine Kane born 1839
Isabella Kane born 1841
As per the death notice in the Newcastle Courant 6 days after the birth of daughter Isabella, mother Isabella (Grewcock) Kane died aged 28 on 23 jun 1841.
On 23 Dec 1842 there is a death notice in the Newcastle Courant citing the death of Susannah Catherine Kane on 17 Dec 1842 Aged 1 year.
at time time of the death of Susannah Catherine she would have been 3 going on 4, would she really have been confused with a 1 year old?
Or
could Isabella (who would have been aged one) have died and Francis have said it was Susannah Catherine?
The mind boggles

I checked again, it actually says Susanna Catherine died aged 4 years, not aged 1 year. My mistake, dodgy eyes.

Hi Emma
Just came across this post whilst googling Isabel Grewcock. Whilst I can not help you with the missing census records, I do have a lot of information about the Grewcocks. I go back to 1715 with Isabel's ancestors. Would love to compare what you have
Regards
Alan (a different one, to above)

Hi
I am also interested in Grewcocks of South Shields. Henry Kane, son of Isabella, who died in 1841, was the father of my grandmother, Amelia. I have found out about Jonathan and Susannah who lived at Willow Cottages from the 1770s until the 1860s but would be very interested in going back to 1815 with the Grewcocks in South Shields. I know there are also Grewcocks in the Midlands but believe the South Shields branch were in that area for some time.
Many thanks for any further info. I am hoping to visit South Shields soon and find out further info. Alan's info sounds really intersting.

Sorry...I meant 1715!

Hi South Shields
Although I got your PM, for some reason I am unable to reply or send you a new PM. Please PM me your e-mail address and I will send you the information you requested.
