Hi being fairly new to this forum forgive me if I sound a bit daft but any ideas on how to trace the inn/ hotel my gg grandfather Peter Mclaren (b. Logierait Perth) ran in Forfur Coupar Angus between 1881 and 1892? Previous to that the family are recorded in Newburgh Fife again as an innkeeper (1881) they stayed there only two yrs tho.

Hi Gill
You may find some additional info on here. From the last Wills & Testaments section of Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.:
Peter MacLaren, 12/11/1892, Farmer and Public House Keeper, Southbank, Forfar, d. 14/07/1892 at Southbank, intestate - Forfar Sheriff Court SC47/40/61
By the look of it, he died without a leaving a will (intestate) and there is only one page showing on the index on Scotlands People, but may be useful nevertheless in terms of info :)
Just putting a link to your previous post for background www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,400169.0.html

thanks I had wee look on scotlands people but no found matches came up!! strange this mission is sent to try me I think. You wouldnt happen to know if the said inn would be on grey street in forfar? It just where one of the sons was born and wondered if there was a connection?

Hi Gill
Sadly, I've no idea where the Inn would have been located. The birth certs for children may provide some clues though as you said.

Have you got them in the 1891 census? Bear in mind that Coupar Angus is now in Perthshire and the 1891 census probably lists it under Perthshire. You should be able to find it at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk at modest cost.
It is possible that the Valuation Rolls might list him as tenant with the name of the inn/hotel. The VRs are held in the National Archives of Scotland www.nas.gov.uk and the National Library of Scotland www.nls.uk and there should also be a set in Perth, probably in the Council Archives.
There may also be records in Council minutes - I don't know exactly when licensing of premises for the sale of alcohol was introduced, but the Perth County Council or Coupar Angus Burgh/Town Council would have dealt with such matters. Again, Perth and Kinross Council Archives in Perth would be the most likely place to find those. See http://www.pkc.gov.uk/Education+and+learning/Libraries+archives+and+learning+centres/Archives/Perth+and+Kinross+Council+Archive.htm
Hope this helps

This is the family's 1891 census entry that Diddy found on the other post:
Peter McLaren 49, Innkeeper & farmer
Christina K McLaren 39
Christina K McLaren 14
David McLaren 13
John McLaren 11
James D W McLaren 9
Peter McLaren 5
Alexr S R McLaren 3
Address: Southbank, Forfar, Angus
Great idea Forfarian to follow up on valuation rolls and licencee details :) This site might be also have some useful resources www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ANS/Archives/

Or even - since Coupar Angus is not in the County of Angus, but in the County of Perth - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/PER/index.html
