Title: John Edward PRUJEAN
Post by: Eyesee on Thursday 20 August 09 08:50 BST (UK)
Has anyone come across this guy on a passenger list anywhere. Trying to find when he arrived in New Zealand.

He was born at Newport, Monmouth, Wales in 1845, elder son of John PRUJEAN and Louisa nee SARJEANT. John snr was a surveyor.

Was still in England in 1861, with his mother, brother and stepfather in Alveston, Gloucestershire.

John Edward PRUJEAN married Lillian Emily ABBIS at St John's Church, Matarawa, near Wanganui on 2 Aug 1888. He died at Wanganui on 14 Nov 1913.

He was a nephew of Isaac SARJEANT who farmed at Fordell, and Henry Sarjeant also a farmer, and who left the money for and who the Sarjeant Gallery in Wanganui is named for.

Hi Ian

Had a look at the ITM which will help narrow the time frame down just a wee bit.....

John Prujean, Bachelor, 43, De??air, 13 years
Lilian Abbiss, Spinster, 23, Fordell, 3 years
The marriage took place in the residence of Mr Abbiss, Fordell
P.L. Cameron, Church of England.

so 1875 or earlier.

Bren

Thanks for the ITM info.

Date would make sense. His mother died in 1874.

Place near Fordell is called Denlair.

Hi Ian

Don't know if you have checked it out, but his Probate revealed nothing as he died Intestate and the Public Trust administered it.

Bren.

ps.
thanks for clarifying "Denlair".

Hi Ian

I'm actually John Edward Prujean's grandson and my name is also John.  I'm also attempting to unravel the family tree and have been trying to find the ship that my grandfather came out on.  We know he arrived in Wellington but are not sure of the date.

Lillian and John had 5 children: from oldest, Louisa (born 1 June 1889), Harry (1891) who was killed in action in WWI on 9 Sept 1918, Alfred (4 March 1892), Albert (9 July 1893), William (13 March 1902) who was my father.

With regards to Bren's comment, according to the "The Abbiss Family History" published in 1985 that I have, John and Lillian were married in the Anglican Church at Fordell.

If you require any further information please don't hesitate to ask.

John

John

Thanks for response. I am researching things for a descendant of Isaac Sarjeant. When I found him in Wales with the Sarjeant family, and then later on at Denlair I did a bit more digging and found he had to be Isaac's nephew.

If you reply to this message a couple of times you can PM me your email and I can swap data via email. You have to have three replies before you can send a PM.

Hi Ian, I hope the information I have will be of help.   Isaac Sargeant first wife was Sarah (nee ) Williams, they had two daughters.  Louisa, later to become Mrs. Tylee and Rosa Marion married a Mr. Seaton.   His first wife died and at age 37 he married a Helen McGregor age 23 years on the 15th.Feb. 1865. Helen was a daughter of Gregor McGregor and Catherine (nee) Frazer.  There were six children from this marriage.   I can give you more particulars if required.   Izaac's 2nd. wife Helen died on the 10th. March 1876.   His third marriage at age 58 was to Elya Mary Ellis.  This took place on the 5th. March 1884.   There were no children more children.   I hope this is helpfull.  I do have more info if required.
Regards,  John

Found this post about John Prujean nephew of Isaac Sarjeant. My great great grandfather Patrick Byrne owned the adjacent property at Denlair Wanganui. (Isaac was his neighbour) I have an old land map dated about 1865 which shows the residents in that area.

I am trying to track down information on 3 Prugean's who went to Denlair School, Fordell, Whanganui, NZ. They may be Prujean. Henry Prugean, Albert Prugean and Fred Prugean. Their names were on a plaque that hung in the school and listed those that served in WWI and those that also died in WWI that went to the school.

There is also a Evan Sargeant and a Eric Sargeant on the Delair School plaque. May be related to the Prugean brothers if its Sarjeant.
Any ideas?

Hello PAG1956

You haven't said just what sort of information you're wanting, but you may care to look through the older NZ newspapers ... there are numerous articles for the name PRUJEAN (not so many for the other spelling "PRUGEAN" ).

This may be the Albert you are seeking (PRUGEAN spelling ... although this may be a spelling error of the surname ?).

Added:   oops, the item didn't highlight name as intended ... but it's 5th paragraph down ... wedding of Albert (who has a brother named Fred. who acted as best man. )

Added 2 :    Looks like the groom's name was actually "John Albert Ernest PRUJEAN" (according to NZ mariage index).

Here is a link to Archives New Zealand which gives you the NZ Army WW1 file for "Henry Arthur PRUJEAN" (whose mother was Lilian Emily PRUJEAN .  John Albert Ernest PRUJEAN was also her son although mother's name is spelled as "Lillian - with two 'ells' " on the birth registration listing.)

Hello again PAG1956

Have responded to your PM.   ;)

Given the large number of other names you are seeking information about ... and because this particular thread has to do with mainly PRUJEAN / SARGEANT ... it may be preferable that a new thread is created ?   ;)
If you'd like to contact our moderator to discuss this further - see click-on link at top of main page "Moderator:  spades " ... you can be sure of receiving the very best advice.  :)
